Shifting Paradigms: From Relapse Prevention To Wellness, Robert E. Longo Lpc, Ncc Jan 2007

Shifting Paradigms: From Relapse Prevention To Wellness, Robert E. Longo Lpc, Ncc

Public Interest Law Reporter

Today's youth present greater challenges than during any other time in recent history. The author proposes that "sex offending by youth is a symptom of a greater problem." Young people with sexual behavior problems and sexual aggression behaviors must be looked at from a holistic/ecological perspective as they may be subject to co-morbid diagnosis, traumatic histories that may have neuro-biological impact on the brain and brain development, and learning deficits and disabilities among other concerns. This article will briefly outline the current thinking about assessing youth with sexual behavior problems and youth who are sexually aggressive from both a sexual …

The Physics Of Fourth Amendment Privacy Rights, Omar Saleem Jan 2007

The Physics Of Fourth Amendment Privacy Rights, Omar Saleem

Journal Publications

Einstein's esteem for theoretical physics and Dostoyevsky serve as a conduit for this article's discussion about the similarities between the evolution of theoretical physics and the criminal process related to Fourth Amendment privacy rights. Part I of this Article demonstrates that law and science share traits of rationality, a quest for universality, and theoretical evolution. Part II traces the parallel paths of Fourth Amendment privacy rights and theoretical physics. Part III illustrates the radical alterations in theoretical physics created by Einstein's relativity discoveries and the radical alterations in Fourth Amendment privacy rights created by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in …

Improvement Of Current Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Systems Utilizing Practices From Outside Industries, Cyrus D. Agarabi Jan 2007

Improvement Of Current Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Systems Utilizing Practices From Outside Industries, Cyrus D. Agarabi

Open Access Master's Theses

Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP' s) were developed to keep the public safe and ensure quality products. Technological evolution of the industry resulted in cGMP requirements which could not keep pace, and ultimately had a restrictive effect on daily operations and process improvements for pharmaceutical manufacturers. In response, the FDA has recently released new Guidances for Industry, PAT-A Framework for Innovative Pharmaceutical Development, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance and Pharmaceutical cGMP's for the 21st Century-A Risk-Based Approach, to encourage innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. The current focus is to understand the product, the manufacturing process and operations rather than the previous …

Impact Of Sociodemographic Adjustments On Test Score Patterns, David C. Ahern Jan 2007

Impact Of Sociodemographic Adjustments On Test Score Patterns, David C. Ahern

Open Access Master's Theses

Sociodemographic adjustment of neuropsychological test scores is widely embraced. However, limited research has examined the frequency with which such adjustments alter score profiles, psychologists' decision-making, or diagnostic accuracy. Of particular interest, in an unknown number of cases test scores that are and are not adjusted may yield conflicting interpretations, both of which cannot be correct. Working with the WAIS-Ill and WMS-Ill, this study examined how often, and the extent to which, sociodemographic adjustment altered test score patterns among normal and abnormal groups. Potential impact on classification and diagnostic accuracy was also examined by determining the frequency with which sociodemographically …

Between Black And White: An Exploratory Investigation Of Biracialism In The United States And South Africa, Whitney Laster Jan 2007

Between Black And White: An Exploratory Investigation Of Biracialism In The United States And South Africa, Whitney Laster

McNair Scholars Journal

The United States and South Africa both endured periods of intense racism produced from rigid social hierarchies. While European populations controlled these institutions, black populations remained marginalized. Critical race theory proposes that race is socially constructed as opposed to inherently biological. Although social construction of the white and black ethnicities formed similarly, the development of the mixing of white and black into biracial peoples developed uniquely in each country. This study will apply concepts from critical race theory to analyze similarities and differences within the constructions, highlighting the elements of colonization, slavery, and de facto segregation and investigating the effects …

Religion In The Trenches: Liberation Theology And Evangelical Protestantism As Tools Of Social Control In The Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), Bryan Manewal Jan 2007

Religion In The Trenches: Liberation Theology And Evangelical Protestantism As Tools Of Social Control In The Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), Bryan Manewal

McNair Scholars Journal

During the early years of Guatemala’s civil war (1960-1996), which pitted the right-wing military regime against leftist revolutionaries, liberation theology became popular among some in the Latin American clergy. Fearing that this new ideology would inspire indigenous populations to join the rebels, the dictatorship looked to suppress the movement inside Guatemala. This research looks at liberation theology, its prominence in the context of the Guatemalan civil war, and the military dictatorship’s use of the opposing tenants of Fundamentalist Protestantism to counter liberation theology’s mass appeal, particularly the ideas of institutionalized sin and the necessity of popular action to exact change.

Interactive Media—The Next Literature?, Latricia Phillips Jan 2007

Interactive Media—The Next Literature?, Latricia Phillips

McNair Scholars Journal

Perceptions of video games (computer games/games played on consoles) have evolved from stereotypical viewpoints that games are just a type of passive learning. My research demonstrates that video games are indeed active by categorizing levels of interactivity and by providing additional ways that they have educational value: defining the cognitive aspect, drawing a comparison between the developments of a children’s museum, and studying serious games. I then establish the relationship between video games and literature, drawing comparisons between the relationships between the author, reader, and text and the player. I conclude that video games can recategorize literature.

Coherent Bayesian Inference On Compact Binary Inspirals Using A Network Of Interferometric Gravitational Wave Detectors, Christian R¨Over, Renate Meyer, Nelson Christensen

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work

Presented in this paper is the description of a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) routine for conducting coherent parameter estimation for interferometric gravitational wave observations of an inspiral of binary compact objects using multiple detectors. Data from several interferometers are processed, and all nine parameters (ignoring spin) associated with the binary system are inferred, including the distance to the source, the masses, and the location on the sky. The data is matched with time-domain inspiral templates that are 2.5 post-Newtonian (PN) in phase and 2.0 PN in amplitude. We designed and tuned an MCMC sampler so that it is able …

Representation In Kenya, Its Diaspora, And Academia: Colonial Legacies In Constructions Of Knowledge About Kenya's Coast, Jesse Benjamin Jan 2007

Representation In Kenya, Its Diaspora, And Academia: Colonial Legacies In Constructions Of Knowledge About Kenya's Coast, Jesse Benjamin

Faculty Articles

This paper explores the construction of knowledge in Kenya in the context and aftermath of colonialism and underdevelopment. Those communities that were politically and economically marginalized in Coast Province over the past century were also displaced in terms of academic opportunities, resulting in fewer social science scholars from Mijikenda and other non-Swahili communities in both Kenyan and diaspora universities. Underdevelopment studies in Africa and Kenya are briefly reviewed, and the colonial history of asymmetric social relations at coastal Kenya is traced. Finally, key debates over identity and history are examined within this context and shown to be exacerbated by diasporic …

Approximate Analysis Of Re-Entrant Lines With Bernoulli Reliability Models, Chong Wang Jan 2007

Approximate Analysis Of Re-Entrant Lines With Bernoulli Reliability Models, Chong Wang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Re-entrant lines are widely used in many manufacturing systems, such as semiconductor, electronics, etc. However, the performance analysis of re-entrant lines is largely unexplored due to its complexity. In this thesis, we present iterative procedures to approximate the production rate of re-entrant lines with Bernoulli reliability of machines. The convergence of the algorithms, uniqueness of the solution, and structural properties, have been proved analytically. The accuracy of the procedures is investigated numerically. It is shown that the approaches developed can either provide a lower bound or a closed estimate of the system production rate. Finally, a case study of automotive …

A Controller Area Network Layer For Reconfigurable Embedded Systems, Nithyananda Siva Jeganathan Jan 2007

A Controller Area Network Layer For Reconfigurable Embedded Systems, Nithyananda Siva Jeganathan

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Dependable and Fault-tolerant computing is actively being pursued as a research area since the 1980s in various fields involving development of safety-critical applications. The ability of the system to provide reliable functional service as per its design is a key paradigm in dependable computing. For providing reliable service in fault-tolerant systems, dynamic reconfiguration has to be supported to enable recovery from errors (induced by faults) or graceful degradation in case of service failures. Reconfigurable Distributed applications provided a platform to develop fault-tolerant systems and these reconfigurable architectures requires an embedded network that is inherently fault-tolerant and capable of handling movement …

Nanostructured Sensors For In-Vivo Neurochemical Recording, Nagari Silpa Jan 2007

Nanostructured Sensors For In-Vivo Neurochemical Recording, Nagari Silpa

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

L-glutamate plays a vital role in central nervous system. It is a neurotransmitterassociated with several neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease, epilepsyand stroke. Continuous and fast monitoring of this neurotransmitter has become amajor concern for neuroscientists throughout the world. A simple, sensitive, and reliable L-glutamate microsensor with short responsetime has been developed using ceramic-based microelectrode arrays with platinum recording sites. The electrodes were modified by electrodeposition of Platinum black (Pt-black) to detect hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) which was produced by enzymatic reactions of glutamate oxidase immobilized on the electrode surface. Modification of Pt electrodes with Pt-black has been adoptedbecause the microscale roughness …
