Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si Dec 2007

Development And Optimization Of A Reconfigurable Telemetry System For Sounding Rocket Payloads, Niladri Si

Engineering

This thesis addresses the development of a flight-ready telemetry encoder for the Alaska Student Rocket Project (ASRP) sounding rocket payload. The Frame Oriented eXpandable Integrated circuit Encoder-2007 (FOXIE-07) was developed to resolve crosstalk, timing, and thermal issues in the original FOXIE-03 encoder prototype. A pre-modulation low-pass filter was implemented between the encoder and the FM transmitter to minimize undesired sidebands from the transmitted signal. Complete testing of the FOXIE-07 encoder and pre-modulation filter was performed to certify them as flight-ready components for the SRP5 payload launch from Poker Flat Research Range in 2009.

The Effect Of Temperature On Circulating Levels Of Methyl Farnesoate And Ecdysteroid Hormones In Female Snow Crab Chionoecetes Opilio, From The Bering Sea, Jacqueline Loretta Mitchell

Fisheries

Methyl farnesoate, a reproductive hormone in crustaceans, was detected for the first time in the hemolymph of female Chionoecetes opilio. Ovigerous crabs were maintained at -1,0, 1, and 3° C to represent near bottom temperatures of the Bering Sea, throughout a reproductive cycle to assess changes, and temperature effects, in hormone levels associated with ovarian maturation, hatching and subsequent extrusion of the next clutch. Methyl farnesoate (MF) levels did not change significantly in any treatment throughout the duration of egg incubation. Levels of MF significantly decreased in crabs exposed to -1 and 0° C when initial versus post extrusion levels …

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin Dec 2007

A Unified Framework For Solving Multiagent Task Assignment Problems, Kevin Cousin

Theses and Dissertations

Multiagent task assignment problem descriptors do not fully represent the complex interactions in a multiagent domain, and algorithmic solutions vary widely depending on how the domain is represented. This issue is compounded as related research fields contain descriptors that similarly describe multiagent task assignment problems, including complex domain interactions, but generally do not provide the mechanisms needed to solve the multiagent aspect of task assignment. This research presents a unified approach to representing and solving the multiagent task assignment problem for complex problem domains. Ideas central to multiagent task allocation, project scheduling, constraint satisfaction, and coalition formation are combined to …

Reconfiguration Of Shipboard Power Systems Using A Genetic Algorithm, Koteshwar Reddy Padamati Dec 2007

Reconfiguration Of Shipboard Power Systems Using A Genetic Algorithm, Koteshwar Reddy Padamati

Theses and Dissertations

The shipboard power system supplies energy to sophisticated systems for weapons, communications, navigation, and operation. After a fault is encountered, reconfiguration of a shipboard power system becomes a critical activity that is required to either restore service to a lost load or to meet some operational requirements of the ship. Reconfiguration refers to changing the topology of the power system in order to isolate system damage and/or optimize certain characteristics of the system related to power efficiency. When finding the optimal state, it is important to have a method that finds the desired state within a short amount of time, …

Video Coding With 3d Wavelet Transforms, Joseph Bradley Boettcher Dec 2007

Video Coding With 3d Wavelet Transforms, Joseph Bradley Boettcher

Theses and Dissertations

Video coding systems based on 3D wavelet transforms offer several advantages over traditional hybrid video coders. This thesis proposes two 3D wavelet-based video-coding approaches. In the first approach, motion compensation with redundant-wavelet multihypothesis, in which multiple predictions that are diverse in transform phase contribute to a single motion estimate, is deployed into the fully scalable MC-EZBC video coder. The bidirectional motion-compensated temporaliltering process of MC-EZBC is adapted to the redundant-wavelet domain, wherein transform redundancy is exploited to generate a phase-diverse multihypothesis prediction of the true temporal filtering. In the second approach, a video coder is proposed that does not perform …

Intelligent Placement Of Meters/Sensors For Shipboard Power System Analysis, Sandhya Sankar Dec 2007

Intelligent Placement Of Meters/Sensors For Shipboard Power System Analysis, Sandhya Sankar

Theses and Dissertations

Real time monitoring of the shipboard power system is a complex task to address. Unlike the terrestrial power system, the shipboard power system is a comparatively smaller system but with more complexity in terms of its system operation. This requires the power system to be continuously monitored to detect any type of fluctuations or disturbances. Planning metering systems in the power system of a ship is a challenging task not only due to the dimensionality of the problem, but also due to the need for reducing redundancy while improving network observability and efficient data collection for a reliable state estimation …

Adaptive parallel applications that can change resources during execution, promise increased application performance and better system utilization. Furthermore, they open the opportunity for developing a new class of parallel applications driven by unpredictable data and events. The research issues in an adaptive parallel system are complex and interrelated. The nature and complexities of the relationships among these issues are not well researched and understood. Before developing adaptive applications or an infrastructure support for adaptive applications, these issues need to be investigated and studied in detail. One way of understanding and investigating these issues is by modeling and simulation. A model …
