Alternative Epigraphic Interpretations Of The Maya Snake Emblem Glyph, Christopher Tyra Savage Jan 2007

Alternative Epigraphic Interpretations Of The Maya Snake Emblem Glyph, Christopher Tyra Savage

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to demonstrate that the Maya snake emblem glyph is associated with religious specialists, instead of geographic locations, as emblem glyphs are typically understood to be. The inscriptions and the media on which the snake emblem glyph occurs will be analyzed to determine the role or function of the "Lord of the Snake." Temporal and spatial data has also been collected to aid in understanding the enigmatic glyph. The snake emblem glyph has recently been identified as originating from a broad area containing the sites of El Peru and La Corona in Guatemala, and Dzibanche, Mexico, a departure …

Delimiting The Culture Defense, James M. Donovan, John Stuart Garth Jan 2007

Delimiting The Culture Defense, James M. Donovan, John Stuart Garth

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This essay builds upon the arguments of Alison Dundes Renteln in her influential book, The Cultural Defense (2004), in which she argues persuasively for a uniformly recognized culture defense in certain litigations. Critiquing some of her details, we recast her three-prong culture defense test to more effectively balance the competing interests of minority culture members to have their ways of life taken seriously by the courts, and of members of the dominant tradition who wish to preserve the rule of law with its necessary perception as treating all parties equally. The offered formulation now includes the following five elements:

1. …

Fear Of Crime And Perceived Risk Of Victimization Among College Students, Jennifer Truman Jan 2007

Fear Of Crime And Perceived Risk Of Victimization Among College Students, Jennifer Truman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fear of crime is argued to be a social problem that may lead to restriction of activities, increased security costs, and avoidance behaviors. Findings from research indicate that there are many demographic influences on the fear of crime. Specifically, gender has been found to be one of the most consistent predictors of crime, that is, females significantly fear crime more than males. Additionally, research suggests that a person's fear of crime or perceived risk to crime may increase their engagement in precautionary behaviors, such as carrying a weapon for protection. The current study examined these relationships using data collected from …

The Influences Of Sufism And Kejawen In Indonesian Political Discourse, Brett J. Mccabe Jan 2007

The Influences Of Sufism And Kejawen In Indonesian Political Discourse, Brett J. Mccabe

Honors Capstones

In current affairs a central issue in the media is Islamic fundamentalism. Various reactions to American foreign policy have divided the globe into a dichotomy supporting or rejecting terrorism. While Middle Eastern countries have received significant attention, other Islamic countries have been largely ignored. Indonesia can be a primary xample for an analysis of how Islam exists outside of the Middle East. The purpose of this research is to consider the initial development of political Islam in Indonesia. This development will consider the level of influence Islam had during the drafting of the Indonesian constitution. Also, this research will show …

Punking Yoga: Reconstructing Post/Neo/Colonial Fashion And Movement, Tara Brabazon Jan 2007

Punking Yoga: Reconstructing Post/Neo/Colonial Fashion And Movement, Tara Brabazon

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The branded clothes worn through sporting and fitness activities confirm that any movement, practice or behaviour that seems transgressive of heteronormative masculinity and femininity is also implicated in neo/colonial incorporations and the casualized workforce that is a characteristic of sports clothing manufacture. In an environment washed by the marketing of opposition, resistance is both difficult to define and apply in cultural studies. This paper invokes 'the problem' of resistance while denying the seamless and simple determinations of positive and negative representations. The focus of study is Yogurt Activewear, a company attacking corporatized yoga wear by creating an anti-brand brand. They …

Exile, Identity, And Artistic Creation: An Arts Based Phenomenological Study With Immigrant Women: A Dissertation, Vera Heller

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This arts based phenomenological study with immigrant women explores the migratory and creative processes from the perspective of the Hero's archetype, viewed by Jung as a template for individuation. Its objective is to gain further insight into the contribution of art therapy to healing the fragmentation of identity inherent in the transition between two - often radically different - cultures.

The Right Of Way: Ethical Decision Making Of Selected Elementary School Principals: A Dissertation, Jennifer Dechiara Jan 2007

The Right Of Way: Ethical Decision Making Of Selected Elementary School Principals: A Dissertation, Jennifer Dechiara

Educational Studies Dissertations

One of the central goals of current education reform in this country has been to equalize learning opportunities and outcomes for all groups of children, including and especially those groups previously marginalized. With federal education reform mandates of the early twenty-first century, the work of schools is rigidly evaluated on evidence of achievement - not simply evidence of good processes and intentions. This high-stakes demand for universal achievement has brought several ethical aspects of school leadership, including distribution of resources and equality of educational opportunity, sharply into focus. The subject of ethics in school administration has only recently been attended …

Justice-Learning: Service-Learning As Justice-Oriented Education, Dan W. Butin Jan 2007

Justice-Learning: Service-Learning As Justice-Oriented Education, Dan W. Butin

Special Topics, General

"Justice-learning" lies at the intersection of service-learning and social justice education. Specifically, I argue for a distinctive form of community-based learning ("antifoundational service-learning") that fosters a justice-oriented framework ("anti-anti-social justice") that makes possible the questioning and disruption of unexamined and all too often oppressive binaries of how we view the struggle toward equity in education. The linkage of service-learning and social justice education in this manner offers a "weak overcoming" that strengthens experiential learning toward justice while avoiding the dilution and radicalization faced by both movements. I, thus, trace the linkages between service-learning and social justice education; explicate the potential …

The Development And Validation Of The Elementary School Ethical Climate Index, Kay Anne Keiser, Laura E. Schulte Jan 2007

The Development And Validation Of The Elementary School Ethical Climate Index, Kay Anne Keiser, Laura E. Schulte

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

The purposes of this study were to develop and validate an instrument that measures the ethical climate of elementary schools. To create the Elementary School Ethical Climate Index (ESECI), we adapted the ethical climate index for middle and high schools. The ESECI assesses student and teacher interactions and relationships through the application of five ethical principles: respect for autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice, and fidelity (Kitchener, 1984, 1985). To provide evidence of the ESECI’s reliability and validity we distributed the ESECI to the students and teachers/staff at one urban elementary school in a Midwestern city. There was a significant difference in …

A Study Of Culture And Conflict Management Styles Of Community College Employees, Jennifer A. Sheridan Jan 2007

A Study Of Culture And Conflict Management Styles Of Community College Employees, Jennifer A. Sheridan

Education Masters

This paper looks at the relationship of department culture and the conflict management styles that people possess. An explanation and the different components of culture are described by several researches. Conflict is also explained as well as the different types of conflict, and where conflict stems from. The study focused on three offices at a community college located in Upstate New York. Based on the offices belonging to different college divisions, the assumption was made that these offices would have different subcultures. The participants of the study work directly with students and often deal with confrontational situations. The goal of …
