Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer Jan 2007

Caring Globally: Jane Addams, World War One, And International Hunger, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Several feminist philosophers, including Virginia Held, Joan Tronto, and Fiona Robinson, see the need for, and the potential of, care ethics for achieving far-reaching political and even global transformation. Tronto recommends that care be used as "a basis for political change" and a "strategy for organizing" (Tronto 1993, 175). Held advocates that "the ethics of care should transform international politics and relations between states as well as within them" (Held 2006, 161).

During and immediately after World War One, Jane Addams attempted to do just that. She sought to bring perspectives and moral sensibilities that have since been theorized in …

Advancing Transdisciplinary And Translational Research Practice: Issues And Models Of Doctoral Education In Public Health, Linda Neuhauser, Dawn M. Richardson, Sonja Mackenzie, Meredith Minkler

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Finding solutions to complex health problems, such as obesity, violence, and climate change, will require radical changes in cross-disciplinary education, research, and practice. The fundamental determinants of health include many interrelated factors such as poverty, culture, education, environment, and government policies. However, traditional public health training has tended to focus more narrowly on diseases and risk factors, and has not adequately leveraged the rich contributions of sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, communication, political science, and other disciplines. Further, students are often not sufficiently trained to work across sectors to translate research findings into effective, large-scale sustainable actions. During the past 2 …

"This Flesh Will Rise Again": Retrieving Early Christian Faith In Bodily Resurrection, J. Douglass Jan 2007

"This Flesh Will Rise Again": Retrieving Early Christian Faith In Bodily Resurrection, J. Douglass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The doctrine of bodily resurrection is fundamental to the Christian faith. Its significance is grounded in the fact that the Christian faith arises from and is dependent upon the belief that Jesus returned to life after having been dead and buried. As a result of this belief and the teaching of Christ's first followers, the early Church articulated a hope for a similar resurrection. In spite of the centrality of the doctrine of bodily resurrection for the early Church, the doctrine's present relevance is questionable. This dissertation provides an answer to the question, What does it mean to affirm faith …

Ethical Dimensions Within Qualitative Research, Jennie Gunn Fnp, Phd Jan 2007

Ethical Dimensions Within Qualitative Research, Jennie Gunn Fnp, Phd

Journal of Health Ethics

Throughout history people have relied on their culture for healing practices and ways of caring. Healing began in Africa thousands of years ago with herbs and plants that were used for healing and rituals. As African people came to America they brought with them cultural ways which were practiced throughout slavery. Thereafter, elders passed down the healing remedies until today.

The purpose of this study was to discover beliefs, meanings, and practices of healing with botanicals (plant, root, or bark parts) recalled by African American women 80 years of age or older that were born and resided in the Mississippi …

Education | Faculty Scholarship

In mid-June, 2005, the members of the INTER Center received a collaboration proposal from FETE-UGT8, with the objective of carrying out a brief exploratory study on the perceptions and experiences that young people and adolescents, mainly immigrants, have concerning possible experiences of discrimination and racism in their immediate surroundings.

The initial objectives of the project were expanded due to the dynamics of the project itself. New focuses of attention and social, educational and personal dynamics, which can condition to a certain extent the experiences that immigrant adolescents undergo, were detected.

The project initially consisted of a series of interviews with …

Developed with a qualitative approach, the study used the three-series interview protocol and analysis consistent with investigating the various components of …

Acted or real—and all life is real whether one is acting or not—the common denominator and consistent, ubiquitous reality of life and all behavior is that it manifests in the form of relationships on all scales. But what is a relationship? Until now, the answer to this question has not been sufficiently known. As a result of many years of empirical research that began with the aim of discovering what is going on in a gifted actor when s/he is playing a character that can be observed and experienced as a living, intuitive being, and based on the knowledge that …
