2006 Survey Results For Cs1310: Introduction To Programming Using Media Computation, Aida Gandara
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In Spring of 2006, the Computer Science Department at the The University of Texas at El Paso began an initiative to offer a course named CS 1310 Introduction to Computing, focused on media computation. The course was directed toward Liberal Arts or non-CS students with the main goal of exposing these students to fundamental concepts of computer science using a highly abstract language called Python. The course was structured similar to that of the CS 1315 Introduction to Media Computation course offered at Georgia Institute of Technology, designed by Associate Professor, Mark Guzdial.

Math Magician: A Study On Distraction And Testing Ability, Brad Fincher, Kate Nelson, Carter Bray
Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal
The problem with distraction in schools today could be affecting student’s learning. Our hypothesis is that students who are confronted with a distraction do not do as well as students who are not confronted with distractions while doing homework. There was a total of thirty five participants. The procedure was for participants in the experimental group would begin doing a math worksheet and a distraction (cell phone ring tone) would be introduced. For participants in the control group they would do the math worksheet in silence with out distraction. The results showed that the distraction did not affect the participant’s …

Czarist Missionary Contact With Central Asia: Models Of Contextualization?, David M. Johnstone

Although the Western church knows little of these ventures, Russian Orthodoxy in fact has a rich missionary heritage. There have been instances of great courage, passion, and cultural sensitivity in Orthodox attempts to bring the Gospel to the Muslim peoples. I outline here some of the context and features of these missionary endeavors.
Are We Prematurely Designating Iran's Revolutionary Guards As Criminal-Soldiers?, Robert J. Bunker, Hakim Hazim
Are We Prematurely Designating Iran's Revolutionary Guards As Criminal-Soldiers?, Robert J. Bunker, Hakim Hazim
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The recent U.S. consideration to designate the 125,000 person strong Revolutionary Guard of Iran as a "specially designated global terrorist" (per Executive Order 13224) has quite a few international security implications. (1) On the most basic level, it highlights growing U.S. and Iranian tensions over Iran's nuclear weapons program and Iranian involvement—via its Quds Force belonging to the Revolutionary Guard—in both fermenting and supporting terrorist and insurgent activities in Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
What may be far more significant, however, is the U.S. designating the military branch of a sovereign state as a terrorist organization. In the past, such …

A qualitative, collective case study explores bereavement rituals in the Muscogee Creek tribe. Data from interviews with 27 participants, all adult members of the tribe, revealed consensus on participation in certain bereavement rituals. Common rituals included (a) conducting a wake service the night before burial; (b) never leaving the body alone before burial; (c) enclosing personal items and food in the casket; (d) digging graves by hand; (e) each individual throwing a handful of dirt into the grave before covering, called giving a ‘‘farewell handshake’’; (f) covering the grave completely by hand; (g) building a house over the grave; (h) …

An Archaeological And Historical Investigation Of A World War Ii Military Site At Goffs, California, Gerald Francis Patterson
Theses Digitization Project
This archaeological and historical investigation focuses on the area in and around the town of Goffs, California, which was used for support and logistical facilities and had some association with combat divisions during the period. The central question concerns the nature and the role of the military units from 1942 to 1944. Was this site a a significant part of the World War II era DTC? C-AMA, and how did it relate to the whole? Efforts to answer this question included document research and extensive field investigation. The result is a more complete view of the wartime activites at Goffs …

The Banneker History Project (BHP) reconstructed the history of the Benjamin Banneker School, which operated as a segregated school for African Americans from 1915 to 1951. It was a project in social justice education with community service as its base. Here, the authors provide an insider perspective of group dynamics among core leaders for the BHP. Building relationships, working for social justice, and confronting racism are key themes for the group. Leaders recall moments of discomfort, particularly related to issues of race and racism, and describe ways they worked through them. Based on their wisdom of practice, authors offer suggestions …

It is, also, to get parents involved with their children's literacy development and to support their educational experiences from elementary school through high school.
Doing Catalan Spanish: Pragmatic Resources And Discourse Strategies In Ways Of Speaking Spanish In Barcelona, Robert E. Vann
Doing Catalan Spanish: Pragmatic Resources And Discourse Strategies In Ways Of Speaking Spanish In Barcelona, Robert E. Vann
Department of Spanish Research
The last decade has seen the publication of many corpus-based studies about Spanish in Catalonia. With an emphasis on the linguistic characteristics that Spanish in Catalonia maintains or has acquired as a result of its prolonged contact with Catalan, these studies have started to catalog the lexicon, phonology and morphosyntax of Spanish in Catalonia. Relatively little attention has been dedicated, however, to the pragmatics of Spanish in Catalonia, that is, to the discourse strategies that constitute Catalan ways of speaking Spanish. The present investigation proceeds in this direction by identifying some of the pragmatic resources employed in Catalan ways of …

A Wave Of The Magic Wand: Fairy Godmothers In Contemporary American Media, Jeana Jorgensen
A Wave Of The Magic Wand: Fairy Godmothers In Contemporary American Media, Jeana Jorgensen
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The increased personification of fairy godmothers in contemporary American media corresponds to an aspect of the American worldview that emphasizes "magical" quick fixes and solutions. The two fairy-tale pastiche works informing this study are a novel, The Fairy Godmother, by fantasy author Mercedes Lackey, and a movie, Shrek 2. Both of these works feature fairy godmother characters that depart from canonical folktale and fairy-tale depictions. Associated with fate and wisdom, fairy godmothers act much as folklorists do by rewarding traditional behavior with gifts. Recent fairy godmother roles are hybrid and multivocal, illuminating ideologies and power structures in both society and …
