Effect Of Different Drugs Influencing Monoamine Neurotransmission On Haloperidol-Induced Catalepsy In Mice, Omar Mohamed Abdel-Salam, Ayman Ragab Baiuomy

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Catalepsy occurs following high dopamine D2 receptor blockade by the typical antipsychotic drug haloperidol. The present study investigated the effect of different drugs affecting monoamine neurotransmission in this animal model of Parkinson's disease in mice. Materials and Methods: Drugs were intraperitoneally administered with haloperidol 30 min prior to testing. Catalepsy was measured using the bar test. Results: Catalepsy duration was reduced by the non-selective noradrenaline and serotonin reuptake inhibitors imipramine and amitriptyline (21.1% and 22.3% reduction by 20 mg/kg imipramine and amitriptyline, respectively). Catalepsy duration was increased by the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and citalopram and …

American Fantasies Of Masculine, Physical Labor And The Dangerous Bodies Of Pacific Island Whalemen In Roger Starbuck's The Golden Harpoon And Herman Melville's Moby-Dick, Jennifer Schell

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Throughout the nineteenth-century, writers, such as James Fenimore Cooper and Joseph C. Hart, fairly consistently appropriated the New England whaling industry for national purposes. They claimed the economic successes of the industry as American successes, and they positioned the whalemen as exemplary American workers. However, not all American whalemen were native-born Americans; some were foreign-born laborers. The presence of Polynesian workers and their racialized laboring bodies - often described as monstrous, grotesque, and repulsive - disrupted nationalistic appropriations of the whaling industry and its workers. What was so dangerous about these men was not just that were reputed to be …

'Time In A Bottle': Temporal Discontinuities In Narratives Of Diaspora, Emily Churilla Jan 2007

'Time In A Bottle': Temporal Discontinuities In Narratives Of Diaspora, Emily Churilla

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The concepts of home have been, and continue to be, the foundation of much of the contention surrounding all sides of discourse regarding diaspora and immigration - through both viewing the home as threatened and defiled as well as redefining the imagined reality of home. It is the impasse of working around and against the frame of Western temporality and space from within the trope of home that this paper will explore; specifically how narratives of diasporic subjectivity disrupt and threaten normalized constructs of origin and time, history, and identity. Because to only consider the question of "home" leaves a …

The Role Of Bdnf Within The Medial Prefrontal Cortex On Relapse To Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, William J. Berglind Jan 2007

The Role Of Bdnf Within The Medial Prefrontal Cortex On Relapse To Cocaine-Seeking Behavior, William J. Berglind

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Glutamatergic pyramidal cells arising from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are critical mediators of reinstatement to cocaine-seeking. A potent modulator of PFC activity is brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule that has been implicated in the regulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission. In this study, the role of BDNF in the PFC was investigated in an animal model of cocaine addiction. First, a cocaine-induced decrease in BDNF mRNA within the PFC was documented following 22 h of abstinence, followed by an increase in BDNF protein expression within the PFC following 21 d of extinction training. Second, an intra-PFC infusion of BDNF attenuated …

In Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School Dist. No. 1, the Supreme Court declared that it will continue to scrutinize race-conscious educational decisions to insure that they are narrowly-tailored to serve a compelling governmental interest. This Article develops a strategy for enhancing racial diversity at all levels of American public education that can survive that rigorous constitutional scrutiny. The Article shows that school districts may prove that assigning a meaningful number of racially diverse students to their secondary schools is narrowly-tailored to achieve their compelling educational interest in teaching racial literacy. The constitutionality of this race-conscious educational strategy …

Influence In An Age Of Terror: A Framework Of Response To Islamist Influence Operations, John Deniston Jan 2007

Influence In An Age Of Terror: A Framework Of Response To Islamist Influence Operations, John Deniston

Global Tides

Adversarial influence operations perpetrated by Islamist terrorist networks confront the most foundational of America’s national defense capabilities: the will of the American people to fight. This assertion is predicated on four key determinations. First, Islamist terrorist networks use influence operations as an integral tool of global jihad. Second, these adversarial influence operations should be perceived as attacks and, subsequently, should demand response. Third, a wide array of US Government tools and institutions currently exists to counter this challenge. Fourth, precision-strike doctrine and cyber-attack response frameworks provide instructional examples of methods to create a coordinated US Government response to such influence …

Effects Of Heavy Metal Toxicity On Immunological Response In The Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca Sexta, Sarah Ogle

Honors Capstones

Nodule formation is one of the main cellular mechanisms insects utilize in response to infection. The nodulation reaction accounts for clearing nearly 90% of the bacterial cells from circulation. Furthermore, the nodulation assay is a useful tool for developing an understanding of how insects immune response to challenge. Little is known of environmental effects such as heavy metal toxicity on insect immunity. This study was designed to investigate a variety of heavy metals influence on the cellular immune response of the tobacco homworm, Manduca sexta, to bacterial challenge. The proposed study is a quantitative style. The first of several trials …

Design Of A Bioreactor To Study The Role Of Red Blood Cells In The Transport Of Nitric Oxide In The Microcirculation, Nupura Bhise, Mahendra Kavdia

Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences

Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in physiological functions like vasodilation, neurotransmission, and inhibition of platelet aggregation. The endothelium-derived NO diffuses into the vascular lumen where it interacts with flowing blood as well as the smooth muscles where it modulates vascular tone. However, uncertainty exists on how NO escapes the rapid scavenging by hemoglobin (Hb) and reaches smooth muscles. Several proposed hypotheses include 1) a reduced reaction rate of NO with Hb contained inside red blood cells (RBCs) and 2) NO preservation in the bound form of s-nitrosohemoglobin or nitrite. The mechanism and magnitude of reduction of NO reaction …

Today is often labeled as the Information Age. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we are inundated with pictures, video, sound, and text. DSL, cable, cell-phones, fax machines, satellite radio, and other technologies keep us instantly in touch with events. To be "connected" is to be seen as contemporary and knowledgeable.

Unfortunately, this instant access is not without risk. Much of this immediate information is unfiltered, untested, and, on occasions, suspect. The anonymous Internet "expert" that is quoted might no more be an expert than your next-door neighbor (in fact, that web site might just be the creation …
