The Mycotoxin Threat To Food Safety, Ervin Balazs, James S. Schepers
The Mycotoxin Threat To Food Safety, Ervin Balazs, James S. Schepers
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
This workshop entitled “Mycotoxins from the Field to the Table” held in Omaha, Nebraska, USA from 29 November to 1 December, 2006 evolved from the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) Co-operative Research Program on “Biological Resource Management” that was initiated in 1979. It currently focuses on three specific areas, namely the natural resources challenge, sustainability in practice, and the food chain. This workshop was organized under the sustainability and food chain themes.
The Cooperative Research Program's two major activities are promotion of expert exchanges by supporting postdoctoral fellowship awards up to 26 weeks in an OECD host laboratory …
The Trade-Off Between Tooth Strength And Tooth Penetration: Predicting Optimal Shape Of Canine Teeth, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen
The Trade-Off Between Tooth Strength And Tooth Penetration: Predicting Optimal Shape Of Canine Teeth, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
We investigate the shape of canine teeth under the assumption that the tooth’s morphology is optimized by the evolutionary trade-off to minimize breakage and maximize ease of the penetration of prey. A series of experiments using artificial teeth to puncture the hides of a deer Odocoileus virginianus and pig Sus scrofa domesticus were conducted to establish the relationships between the tooth shape and the force needed to puncture the hide. The shapes of these teeth were also used in a beam theory analysis to calculate the strength of the teeth. Because the relative costs of puncturing and breakage were not …

Corn Stalk Grazing: A Matter Of Economics, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson, Leslie Aaron Stalker
Cornhusker Economics
The United States Department of Agriculture’s January 1, 2007 “Cattle Inventory” report indicated that there were 1,940,000 beef cows that have calved in Nebraska. In another USDA report titled “Crops Planted, Harvested, Yield, Production, Price (MYA), Value of Production” it was estimated that there will be 9,000,000 acres of corn harvested in 2007. These numbers indicate the potential opportunity to graze cattle on corn stalk residue in Nebraska is huge. With corn harvest nearing completion and weaning time for many producers happening this month, farmers and ranchers are likely to be negotiating the terms of agreements to graze these corn …

An Environmental Assessment Of Little Black Lake, Alan D. Steinman, Mary Ogdahl, Carl Ruetz
An Environmental Assessment Of Little Black Lake, Alan D. Steinman, Mary Ogdahl, Carl Ruetz
Scientific Technical Reports
A limnological survey was conducted of Little Black Lake and its tributaries during summer 2007 by researchers at the Annis Water Resources Institute of Grand Valley State University. Water quality, sediment composition, and phytoplankton, macrophyte, and fish abundance and composition were analyzed. In general, the water quality of both the inflows to, and Little Black Lake itself, was good. Nutrient concentrations occasionally exceeded existing guidelines, but no systemic problems were detected. Phosphorus concentrations did increase during stormflow conditions, but this is typical and concentrations were not considered excessive. One site in the lake had very high sediment phosphorus concentrations. Because …

Transcriptional Control Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation By Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Γ: Therapeutic Implications For Cardiovascular Diseases, Florence Gizard, Dennis Bruemmer
Transcriptional Control Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation By Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor-Γ: Therapeutic Implications For Cardiovascular Diseases, Florence Gizard, Dennis Bruemmer
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is a critical process for the development of atherosclerosis and complications of procedures used to treat atherosclerotic diseases, including postangioplasty restenosis, vein graft failure, and transplant vasculopathy. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily and the molecular target for the thiazolidinediones (TZD), used clinically to treat insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes. In addition to their efficacy to improve insulin sensitivity, TZD exert a broad spectrum of pleiotropic beneficial effects on vascular gene expression programs. In SMCs, PPARgamma is prominently upregulated during neointima formation …
A Novel Approach To Determine Arsenic Contamination In The Environment, Dean Franklin
A Novel Approach To Determine Arsenic Contamination In The Environment, Dean Franklin
Theses
This study examines a novel method to determine heavy metal contamination in the environment. This method will combine the established technique of atomic absorption spectroscopy with terrestrial isopods. The terrestrial isopods bioaccumulate heavy metals. The established forensic analysis by atomic absorption was used to quantify heavy metal poisoning. Spectroscopy determined the presence of arsenic and lead in four study areas. Arsenic contamination was the focus of this study. Lead contamination was done in parallel to verify the method. As part of the controls, three types of lumber were offered the isopods to feed on. Those lumber samples were kiln dried …
