A Conserved Cam- And Radial Spoke–Associated Complex Mediates Regulation Of Flagellar Dynein Activity, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith Nov 2007

A Conserved Cam- And Radial Spoke–Associated Complex Mediates Regulation Of Flagellar Dynein Activity, Erin E. Dymek, Elizabeth F. Smith

Dartmouth Scholarship

For virtually all cilia and eukaryotic flagella, the second messengers calcium and cyclic adenosine monophosphate are implicated in modulating dynein- driven microtubule sliding to regulate beating. Calmodulin (CaM) localizes to the axoneme and is a key calcium sensor involved in regulating motility. Using immunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry, we identify members of a CaM-containing complex that are involved in regulating dynein activity. This complex includes flagellar-associated protein 91 (FAP91), which shares considerable sequence similarity to AAT-1, a protein originally identified in testis as an A-kinase anchor protein (AKAP)- binding protein. FAP91 directly interacts with radial spoke protein 3 (an AKAP), which …

A New Environmental Order: Laying The Legal And Administrative Foundation For Global Environmental Governance, Deepa Badrinarayana Nov 2007

A New Environmental Order: Laying The Legal And Administrative Foundation For Global Environmental Governance, Deepa Badrinarayana

Dissertations & Theses

This dissertation argues that global environmental governance can be strengthened by structuring legal and administrative mechanisms to meet the demands of the current world order. In particular, this dissertation provides a theoretical analysis of those legal and administrative mechanisms that can improve environmental governance in a globalizing world. However, since it is a theoretical analysis, this dissertation does not assert that the analysis in itself will simplify the process of strengthening the rule of law, resolve all environmental issues, or require every single environmental problem to be addressed through an international process. Rather, the objective of the analysis is to …

Effect Of Management Decisions On Farm And Household Outcomes In An Integrated Crop-Livestock Agro-Ecosystem In Yucatan, Mexico, David Parsons, Jerome H. Cherney, Charles F. Nicholson, Robert W. Blake, Quirine M. Ketterings, Luis Ramirez-Aviles, Luis O. Tedeschi

Agribusiness

Mixed farming systems are defined by Sere and Steinfeld (1996) as those in which more than 10% of the dry matter fed to livestock comes from crop by-products or stubble, and more than 10% of the value of production comes from non-livestock farming activities. More simply, they are systems where livestock rearing and crop cultivation are, to a greater or lesser extent, integrated components of one farming system. The more integrated systems are characterized by interdependency between crop and livestock activity, optimizing circulation of locally available nutrients. The less integrated systems are those in which crop and livestock activities make …

Faculty Perceptions Of Technology Projects, Whitney Ransom Mcgowan, Charles R. Graham, Jon Mott

Faculty Publications

Significant investments in time, money, and effort go into developing and applying technology to improve teaching and learning. As universities pursue such projects, they must determine the impact and value of technology for student learning. During the past decade, funds spent on technology for educational purposes have tripled throughout the United States. Determining a hard return on investment (ROI) for the time and money spent to improve education is difficult, however. Institutions should also measure the value on investment (VOI) that their funds and efforts yield. In the study of faculty and their technology projects at Brigham Young University (BYU) …

Islamophobia And The U.S. Media, Michelle Maria Nichole Diamond Nov 2007

Islamophobia And The U.S. Media, Michelle Maria Nichole Diamond

Dissertations and Theses

The following paper examines the growing fear and discrimination currently projected towards Islam and Muslims in the United States. This thesis will specifically focus on what role the U.S. mainstream media has played in either increasing or decreasing Islamophobia amongst the American public post September 11, 2001. The research collected to conduct this study came from theories of political science, conflict resolution, international affairs, psychology, sociology, and personal interviews. I conclude that Islamophobia has increased in the United States since the attacks of September 11, 2001 and that Islamophobia, due to the mainstream media, is more pervasive in the U.S. …

Managing Water Resources In New Mexico: Climate Trends And Cropping Patterns In The Lower Rio Grande, Cynthia Stokes Nov 2007

Managing Water Resources In New Mexico: Climate Trends And Cropping Patterns In The Lower Rio Grande, Cynthia Stokes

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Lower Rio Grande basin is located in south-central New Mexico, an agriculturally significant region with an increasing population. Available water supply is used for irrigated agriculture, public water supply systems, commercial purposes, livestock watering, domestic wells, power generation, and industrial and mining purposes. Over time, consumptive use of irrigated water has increased, and the regional population is expected to grow. These increases in demand could put unsustainable stress on the limited supply of water in the Lower Rio Grande. For this project, climatological and agricultural data were analyzed to determine if the growing season had lengthened since 1892, and …

Countdown To Hiroshima, David S.R. Bridges Nov 2007

Countdown To Hiroshima, David S.R. Bridges

Theses

On August 6th, 1945 at approximately 8: 15 a.m. the United States dropped a uranium-based atomic bomb code named "Little Boy," on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The initial explosion, which was the equivalent of 13,000 tons of TNT, killed 45,000 of the largely civilian population instantly. Hundreds of thousands more would die of radiation-related illnesses in the decades to follow and a conservative estimate puts the death toll from the Hiroshima bombing at 200,000.

Three days later, the United States would drop another atomic bomb composed of plutonium and code named "Fat Boy," on the Japanese city of Nagasaki …

What is the best approach to scaffolding graduate students to higher knowledge and a heightened awareness of their own pedagogy? This article addresses that key educational question by investigating and depicting one atypical scenario, a collaborative model between a university graduate Remedial Reading class and a local adult literacy coalition. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomena of signifacnt learning gains that occurred for the graduate students. The co-researchers utilized hybrid discourse and grounded theory in order to gain a new perspective on a familiar situation, the learning process that occurs within a university classroom. The educational …

Animal Science

Beef from retail and foodservice establishments in 11 US cities was evaluated using Warner–Bratzler shear (WBS) and consumer evaluation panels. Postmortem aging times ranged from3 to83d for retail and7 to 136d for foodservice with mean aging times of 22.6d and 30.1 d, respectively. For retail, the three cuts from the round – top round, bottom round, and eye of round – had the highest (P < 0.05) WBS values compared to cuts from the chuck, rib, and loin. Top loin steaks had the lowest(P < 0.05) WBS value compared to ribeye and top sirloin foodservice steaks. Retail bone-in top loin, top loin, ribeye, T-bone, and porterhouse received the highest (P < 0.05) ratings by consumers for overall like and like tenderness. Quality grade had little or no effect on foodservice sensory evaluations. Improvements in round tenderness are needed to increase consumer acceptability.
