Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The University of Montana excavated the Tongue River bison kill site (24RB2135) in 2005 on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. This was the site of a prehistoric bison hunt. Over 20,000 bone fragments and over 1,000 stone tools were recovered during the excavation. This study focuses on the bone material in order to understand past hunting practices at this site. In order to complete the analyses required to understand the faunal material, specific data was gathered for each bone element. These data points include: the taxon, skeletal element, side, body orientation, portion, color, size, weathering, age, and any natural or cultural …

Sex And Diversity In The Invasive Plant Hieracium Aurantiacum, Eli Stuart Loomis Jan 2007

Sex And Diversity In The Invasive Plant Hieracium Aurantiacum, Eli Stuart Loomis

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Sexual reproduction is generally thought to provide long-term fitness advantages over asexual reproduction in the form of increased genetic diversity. Some work, however, suggests that asexual reproduction can also be advantageous. One situation when asexual reproduction provides an advantage is when colonizing a new range (Baker’s law), as in plant invasions. This study investigated the population structure of the invasive plant Hieracium aurantiacum. H. aurantiacum is an apomict – producing much of its seed asexually – and has become a common invasive in North America and New Zealand. The genetic diversity of H. aurantiacum was assessed over its invasive ranges …

A Penny For Your Thoughts: Private And Collective Contracting For Traditional Medicinal Knowledge Modeled On Bioprospecting Contracts In Costa Rica, Katie Bates

Georgia Law Review

For decades, pharmaceutical companies have prospected biologically diverse developing countries for plants and molecules that may form the foundations of groundbreaking medicines. In many cases, native populations have aided researchers by directing them to the plants used in their traditional medicines. Only recently, however, have native peoples pushed for compensation for this valuable contribution. The governments of developing countries, too, have begun to assert legal and physical control over their natural resources, making access to these resources by pharmaceutical companies more difficult and costly. Simultaneously, scientific developments have made drug discovery through alternative methods more feasible. Despite these changes, it …

Trans Fat: Can New York City Save Its Citizens From This "Metabolic Poison"?, Elizabeth Y. Spivey Jan 2007

Trans Fat: Can New York City Save Its Citizens From This "Metabolic Poison"?, Elizabeth Y. Spivey

Georgia Law Review

Trans fat was developed by chemists at the turn of the century and became an increasingly large part of the American diet. Trans fat in the form of partially hydrogenated vegetable oil now makes up 2% of all calories consumed in the United States. In the past two decades, studies have shown that artificially created trans fat increases cholesterol and increases the risk of coronary heart disease, heart attack, and type II diabetes. In response to these health concerns, New York City's Board of Health voted to ban trans fat from restaurant fare in December 2006. Other cities and local …

The Structure Function Relationship Of Silica Polyamine Composites, Mark Anthony Hughes Jan 2007

The Structure Function Relationship Of Silica Polyamine Composites, Mark Anthony Hughes

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The goals of this thesis were to improve the performance of silica polyamine composites by manipulating the surface structure and to understand the relationship between, polymer structure and ligand modification of the grafted polyamine. Improvements in silica polyamine composite performance resulted from modifying silica gel with methyltrichlorosilane (MTCS) substituted for a molar fraction of reagent chloropropyltrichlorosilane (CPTCS), which has been traditionally employed. MTCS does not possess a terminal chloride group thus preventing the subsequent attachment of a polyamine to this moiety. MTCS has a smaller molecular volume than CPTCS and as a consequence greater coverage of the silica gel surface …

Chlorella Viruses Contain Genes Encoding A Complete Polyamine Biosynthetic Pathway, Sascha Baumann, Adrienne Sander, James Gurnon, Giane M. Yanai-Balser, James L. Van Etten, Markus Piotrowski Jan 2007

Chlorella Viruses Contain Genes Encoding A Complete Polyamine Biosynthetic Pathway, Sascha Baumann, Adrienne Sander, James Gurnon, Giane M. Yanai-Balser, James L. Van Etten, Markus Piotrowski

James Van Etten Publications

Two genes encoding the putative polyamine biosynthetic enzymes agmatine iminohydrolase (AIH) and N-carbamoylputrescine amidohydrolase (CPA) were cloned from the chloroviruses PBCV-1, NY-2A and MT325. They were expressed in Escherichia coli to form C-terminal (His)6-tagged proteins and the recombinant proteins were purified by Ni2+- binding affinity chromatography. The biochemical properties of the two enzymes are similar to AIH and CPA enzymes from Arabidopsis thaliana and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Together with the previously known virus genes encoding ornithine/arginine decarboxlyase (ODC/ADC) and homospermidine synthase, the chloroviruses have genes that encode a complete set of functional enzymes that synthesize the rare polyamine homospermidine from arginine …

Dusting Off The Blaine Amendment: Two Challenges To Missouri's Anti-Establishment Tradition, Aaron E. Schwartz Jan 2007

Dusting Off The Blaine Amendment: Two Challenges To Missouri's Anti-Establishment Tradition, Aaron E. Schwartz

Missouri Law Review

Using broad strokes to paint the rights and protections granted therein, the free exercise and the establishment clauses stand as dual monuments to the great-American experiment in separating the State and the sacred. Their sparse language is contrasted by comparatively specific manifestations of similar interests in the state constitutions. Echoing their federal counterpart, the state constitutions commonly command that the state may not fund religiously affiliated educational institutions. No fewer than thirty-eight states, including Missouri, adopted a so-called "Blaine Amendment," which prevent states from supporting sectarian or religious schools. Employing more detail than its federal counterpart, Missouri's constitution made explicit …

Learning Not To Think Like An Economist, David R. Ross Jan 2007

Learning Not To Think Like An Economist, David R. Ross

Economics Faculty Research and Scholarship

This essay describes my progress bringing the core ideas of economics into conversations with noneconomists about important public policy issues within my faith community, through local politics, and through interdisciplinary conversations in academia. Thinking like an economist is essential to conducting research and performing careful analysis of public policy issues. However, it can reduce the economists’ effectiveness in teaching and interacting with neighbors and political leaders. Effective pedagogy requires that faculty be present as good economists to their neighbors, their fellow citizens, in daily conversations and public policy debates. Our continuing education as teachers of economics requires that we enter …

A Role For The Cytoskeleton In Heart Looping, Kersti K. Linask, Michael Vanauker Jan 2007

A Role For The Cytoskeleton In Heart Looping, Kersti K. Linask, Michael Vanauker

Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Over the past 10 years, key genes involved in specification of left-right laterality pathways in the embryo have been defined. The read-out for misexpression of laterality genes is usually the direction of heart looping. The question of how dextral looping direction occurred mechanistically and how the heart tube bends remains unknown. It is becoming clear from our experiments and those of others that left-right differences in cell proliferation in the second heart field (anterior heart field) drives the dextral direction. Evidence is accumulating that the cytoskeleton is at the center of laterality, and the bending and rotational forces associated with …

Differentiated Instruction: The Effect On Student Achievement In An Elementary School, Patricia A. Koeze

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if differentiated instruction had an effect on student achievement. The researcher sought to answer two research questions “Does differentiated instruction have an impact on student achievement?” and “Are there components of differentiated instruction that have a greater impact on student achievement than others?”

The study followed a mixed method design and consisted of two parts. First, a quantitative analysis of test scores from the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP) and teacher and student survey results were analyzed as a means to outline broad relationships from the data. Results from the quantitative findings …
