Anti-Predator Behaviour In The Freshwater Gastropod Lymnaea Stagnalis, Sarah Joanne Dalesman Jan 2007

Anti-Predator Behaviour In The Freshwater Gastropod Lymnaea Stagnalis, Sarah Joanne Dalesman

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis was used as a model organism to investigate the mechanisms employed by prey species to fine-tune anti-predator behaviour to match their environment. Lymnaea stagnalis was found to exhibit both genetic adaptation of innate responses and also induced responses to predator cues. Snails were also capable of responding to predation cues via associative learning dependent on recent experience. Constitutive responses were found to differ between populations depending on the predator regime that the population experienced in the wild. Artificial selection produced in only two generations a difference in the magnitude of response between high and low …

Effect Of Coyotes And Release Site Selection On Survival And Movement Of Translocated Swift Foxes In The Badlands Ecosystem Of South Dakota, Greg M. Schroeder Jan 2007

Effect Of Coyotes And Release Site Selection On Survival And Movement Of Translocated Swift Foxes In The Badlands Ecosystem Of South Dakota, Greg M. Schroeder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Success of different release strategies for swift fox (Vulpes velox) translocation was evaluated in the Badlands Ecosystem in southwestern South Dakota. Release site selection (outside coyote [Canis latrans] core-use areas compared to random release sites) and release method (i.e., hard, semi-hard, and soft) were examined to determine effects on swift fox survival and movements at 50 days post-release. I hypothesized that swift foxes released outside of coyote core-use areas would survive at a higher rate than foxes released at random sites. From 2003-2006, 16 adult coyotes were fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) radio collars and monitored during the pup …

Status, Distribution, And Density Of White-Tailed Jackrabbits And Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In South Dakota, Dustin J. Schaible Jan 2007

Status, Distribution, And Density Of White-Tailed Jackrabbits And Black-Tailed Jackrabbits In South Dakota, Dustin J. Schaible

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The status of jackrabbit (Lepus spp.) populations throughout the Northern Great Plains has been a cause for concern by wildlife managers in recent years and there has been a paucity of information about the ecology of the white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) and the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) in South Dakota. Since there have been little monitoring efforts for hares, 21 permanent spotlight line transects were established across South Dakota for future surveying efforts. These transects were surveyed to obtain baseline information about jackrabbit density and distribution throughout the state. Jackrabbit density was highest in the northwestern portions of the state …

Imaging Body Structure And Mapping Brain Function: A Historical Approach, Stacey A. Tovino Jan 2007

Imaging Body Structure And Mapping Brain Function: A Historical Approach, Stacey A. Tovino

Faculty Articles

Now in its second decade, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) localizes changes in blood oxygenation that occur in the brain when an individual performs a mental task. Physicians and scientists use fMRI not only to map sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, but also to study the neural correlates of a range of sensitive and potentially stigmatizing conditions, behaviors, and characteristics. Poised to move outside the traditional clinical and research contexts, fMRI raises a number of ethical, legal, and social issues that are being explored within a burgeoning neuroethics literature. In this Article, I place these issues in their proper historical …

Loving Indian Style: Maintaining Racial Caste And Tribal Sovereignty Through Sexual Assimilation, Carla Pratt Jan 2007

Loving Indian Style: Maintaining Racial Caste And Tribal Sovereignty Through Sexual Assimilation, Carla Pratt

Faculty Articles

Scholars have generally characterized Loving v. Virginia as a case about the line separating whites from blacks. But within the subtext of Loving there is an additional narrative about the line separating blacks from Indians. State laws governing miscegenation had a profound impact on tribal law and the practices of tribal people by indirectly regulating interracial relations between certain nonwhite groups of people and rendering blacks as undesirable partners for marriage.

The Muduga And Kurumba Of Kerala, South India And The Social Organization Of Hunting And Gathering, George Tharakan C. Jan 2007

The Muduga And Kurumba Of Kerala, South India And The Social Organization Of Hunting And Gathering, George Tharakan C.

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article examines the subsistence practices among the Muduga and Kurumba of Attappady in Kerala paying close attention to the socio-ecological basis of their economic activities. This facilitates an understanding of the close relationship between the distribution of natural and cultural communities, and the way in which the society is organized to reach a successful accommodation of a specific set of environmental needs. The data presented relate to wild and domesticated food products and the kin and social systems employed for obtaining them. I conclude that, although hunting and gathering alone could provide a subsistence, in a modern situation, dependence …

Phylogeography Of Cave Crickets (Ceuthophilus Spp.) In Central Texas: A Keystone Taxon For The Conservation And Management Of Federally Listed Endangered Cave Arthropods, Kevin P. Johnson, Jean K. Krejca, John D. Murdoch

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Ceuthophilus spp. (Orthoptera: Rhaphidophoridae) in two subgenera (Ceuthophilus and Geotettix) were examined phylogenetically, morphologically, and biogeographically in order to improve our understanding of these species that carry nutrients into caves and are thus closely tied to rare and endangered troglobites in central Texas. Crickets were collected from 43 caves across central Texas, and outgroup taxa were collected in west Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, and Mexico. We analyzed 1263 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA from the COI and ND5 genes and complemented this data with morphometric analyses of 19 morphological characters. Phylogenetic trees from the molecular analysis allowed us to …

Conservation Of Grassland Birds In North America: Understanding Ecological Processes In Different Regions, Robert A. Askins, Felipe Chavez-Ramirez, Brenda C. Dale, Carola A. Haas, James R. Herkert, Fritz L. Knopf, Peter D. Vickery Jan 2007

Conservation Of Grassland Birds In North America: Understanding Ecological Processes In Different Regions, Robert A. Askins, Felipe Chavez-Ramirez, Brenda C. Dale, Carola A. Haas, James R. Herkert, Fritz L. Knopf, Peter D. Vickery

Ornithological Monographs

Many species of birds that depend on grassland or savanna habitats have shown substantial overall population declines in North America. To understand the causes of these declines, we examined the habitat requirements of birds in six types of grassland in different regions of the continent. Open habitats were originally maintained by ecological drivers (continual and pervasive ecological processes) such as drought, grazing, and fire in tallgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, shortgrass prairie, desert grassland, and longleaf pine savanna. By contrast, grasslands were created by occasional disturbances (e.g., fires or beaver [Castor canadensis] activity) in much of northeastern North America. The relative …

Acadian Biospeleology: Composition And Ecology Of Cave Fauna Of Nova Scotia And Southern New Brunswick, Canada, Max Moseley Jan 2007

Acadian Biospeleology: Composition And Ecology Of Cave Fauna Of Nova Scotia And Southern New Brunswick, Canada, Max Moseley

KIP Articles

The vertebrate and invertebrate fauna, environment and habitats of caves and disused mines in Nova Scotia and southern New Brunswick are provisionally catalogued and described, based on field collections made over many years. The area was glaciated and the subterranean fauna consists of non-troglobites all of which have arrived and colonised the caves during or following final recession of the Pleistocene glaciers. The statistical composition of the fauna at the higher taxonomic level is similar to that in Ontario, but is less species rich and there are some notable ecological and other differences. Porcupine dung accumulations are an important habitat …

Quantifying Soil Chemical Properties Using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Robert L. Ficklin, Shane M. Foley, Robert E. Kissell Jr. Jan 2007

Quantifying Soil Chemical Properties Using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Robert L. Ficklin, Shane M. Foley, Robert E. Kissell Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Methodologies for determining soil chemical properties have evolved dramatically during the past century. Early geochemical analyses were conducted exclusively through the use of wet chemistry techniques that were relatively reliable but painstaking and subject to errors at various stages of analysis. Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has emerged as a new approach for rapidly analyzing a variety of materials including soils. In this study soil samples were taken from eight study areas across the Ozark Highlands of Arkansas, and NIRS calibration models were developed to determine the accuracy of using NIRS to analyze soils compared with standard soil chemical analysis …

How To Create—Or Destroy—Wealth In Real Property, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2007

How To Create—Or Destroy—Wealth In Real Property, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

Current legal conceptions of property differ in the private and the public law. The former develops a comprehensive conception that gives full protection for each element in the bundle of rights - possession, use and disposition - which allows parties to enter into complex transactions that increase wealth for the parties without prejudicing outsiders. Constitutional doctrine gives strong protection to exclusion, but weak protection to use and disposition, and thus invites a complex range of government strategies that reduce property value, without creating any offsetting gain in third parties.

Deference, Delegation, And Immigration Law, Adam B. Cox Jan 2007

Deference, Delegation, And Immigration Law, Adam B. Cox

Faculty Articles

The history of immigration jurisprudence is a history of obsession with judicial deference. The foundational doctrine of constitutional immigration law - the plenary power doctrine - is centrally concerned with such deference. This century-old doctrine has been augmented by developments in administrative law that often obligate judges to defer to agencies' factual and legal judgments. Taken together, these constitutional traditions and administrative law trends would appear to make it inevitable that federal courts will passively accept administrative judgments on immigration matters. Yet Judge Richard Posner's recent immigration jurisprudence flips this foundational premise on its head: his immigration opinions exhibit extremely …
