Fuel Ethanol: Background And Public Policy Issues, Brent D. Yacobucci
Fuel Ethanol: Background And Public Policy Issues, Brent D. Yacobucci
Congressional Research Service Reports
Ethanol plays a key role in policy discussions about energy, agriculture, taxes, and the environment. In the United States it is mostly made from corn; in other countries it is often made from cane sugar. Fuel ethanol is generally blended in gasoline to reduce emissions, increase octane, and extend gasoline stocks. Recent high oil and gasoline prices have led to increased interest in alternatives to petroleum fuels for transportation. Further, concerns over climate change have raised interest in developing fuels with lower fuel-cycle greenhouse-gas emissions.
Supporters of ethanol argue that its use can lead to lower emissions of toxic and …
Background And Legal Issues Related To Stem Cell Research, Jon O. Shimabukuro
Background And Legal Issues Related To Stem Cell Research, Jon O. Shimabukuro
Congressional Research Service Reports
In August 2001, President Bush announced that federal funds, with certain restrictions, may be used to conduct research on human embryonic stem cells. Federal research is limited to “the more than 60” existing stem cell lines that were derived (1) with the informed consent of the donors; (2) from excess embryos created solely for reproductive purposes; and (3) without any financial inducements to the donors. No federal funds may be used for the derivation or use of stem cell lines derived from newly destroyed embryos; the creation of any human embryos for research purposes; or cloning of human embryos for …

G07-1704 Chloramines Water Disinfection: Omaha Metropolitan Utilities District And Lincoln Water System, Sharon Skipton, Bruce I. Dvorak
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Bacteria and other disease-causing organisms in drinking water can cause intestinal infections, dysentery and a variety of other illnesses. Water disinfection reduces disease-causing organisms and prevents the transmission of disease. This 2007 NebGuide discusses the disinfection process used by the Omaha Metropolitan Utilities District and Lincoln Water System.

Ec07-2508 Fumigating Farm-Stored Grain With Aluminum Phosphide, Clyde Ogg, Thomas W. Dorn
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Fumigants kill all insect life stages. They control pests by diffusing through the air spaces between grain kernels and into the kernel itself. Fumigants are able to penetrate into places that are inaccessible to insecticide sprays or dusts.
This publication is designed to help provide direction to farmers who have private pesticide applicator licenses and who decide to do the fumigation themselves.
Identification Of Symptom Domains In Ulcerative Colitis That Occur Frequently During Flares And Are Responsive To Changes In Disease Activity, Tahira M. Khan
Identification Of Symptom Domains In Ulcerative Colitis That Occur Frequently During Flares And Are Responsive To Changes In Disease Activity, Tahira M. Khan
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The aim of this study was to determine which symptom domains in ulcerative colitis (UC) are important in the evaluation of disease activity. An important symptom is that which 1) occurs during flares, 2) improves during effective therapy, and 3) resolves during remission. Twenty eight symptom domains were evaluated. Sixty subjects were surveyed, rating each symptom on three criteria with a 100 mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Important symptoms were defined a priori as those whose median VAS rating for all 3 criteria was significantly greater than 50. Thirteen of the 28 symptom domains proved to be both frequent in …

Visualizing The Inner Structure Of N-Body Data Using Skeletonization, Edward Dale, Hans-Peter Bischof
Visualizing The Inner Structure Of N-Body Data Using Skeletonization, Edward Dale, Hans-Peter Bischof
Presentations and other scholarship
N-body simulations solve the n-body problem numerically and determine the trajectories of the n point masses. The result of these calculations is a huge amount of data detailing the positions and other properties of each body such as mass and velocity. To effectively draw conclusions from these data, one must employ scientific visualization to create images and movies that illustrate the structure of the data. We show that the computer animation technique of skeletonization can be applied to the volume data produced by n-body simulations in order to visualize the inner structure of the data. This novel application is compared …

Tied Up In Knotts? Gps And The Fourth Amendment, Renee Mcdonald Hutchins
Tied Up In Knotts? Gps And The Fourth Amendment, Renee Mcdonald Hutchins
Journal Articles
Judicial and scholarly assessment of emerging technology seems poised to drive the Fourth Amendment down one of three paths. The first would simply relegate the amendment to a footnote in history books by limiting its reach to harms that the framers specifically envisioned. A modified version of this first approach would dispense with expansive constitutional notions of privacy and replace them with legislative fixes. A third path offers the amendment continued vitality but requires the U.S. Supreme Court to overhaul its Fourth Amendment analysis. Fortunately, a fourth alternative is available to cabin emerging technologies within the existing doctrinal framework. Analysis …

Imagination has been introduced as a term of art in discussion of the social and political world. Some years ago James Boyd White turned to it in The Legal Imagination, his monumental work on the foundations of secular law and legal practice. A prominent example of its use today is Charles Taylor's Modern Social Imaginaries, tracing changes in the common mind leading to what we now call modernity. The term can have a large scope and at the same time a rather definite meaning. "Imagination" is at the center of Mark Massa's comments on the contrarian position of the Catholic …

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Intergenerational Equity, Cass R. Sunstein, Arden Rowell
On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Intergenerational Equity, Cass R. Sunstein, Arden Rowell
University of Chicago Law Review
There is an elaborate debate over the practice of "discounting" regulatory benefits, such as environmental improvements and decreased risks to health and life, when those benefits will not be enjoyed until some future date. Economists tend to think that, as a general rule, such benefits should be discounted in the same way as money; many philosophers and lawyers doubt that conclusion on empirical and normative grounds. Both sides frequently neglect a simple point: if regulators are interested in how people currently value risks that will not come to fruition for a significant time, they can use people's current willingness to …

The Earp-Holliday Trial: An Account, Douglas O. Linder

The Old West's most famous gunbattle lasted all of about thirty seconds, but it left three men dead, three other men shot, and enough questions to occupy historians for more than a century. The gunfight also led to criminal charges being filed against the three Earp brothers (Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan) and Doc Holliday who, near the O. K. Corral on October 26, 1881, decided to enforce the law against four notorious cowboys. The hearing that followed the shoot-out considered the question of whether the Earps and Hollidays killed out of a justifiable fear for their own lives or simply …
The Nuremberg Trials, Douglas O. Linder
The Nuremberg Trials, Douglas O. Linder

No trial provides a better basis for understanding the nature and causes of evil than do the Nuremberg trials from 1945 to 1949. Those who come to the trials expecting to find sadistic monsters are generally disappointed. What is shocking about Nuremberg is the ordinariness of the defendants: men who may be good fathers, kind to animals, even unassuming - yet who committed unspeakable crimes. Years later, reporting on the trial of Adolf Eichmann, Hannah Arendt wrote of the banality of evil. Like Eichmann, most Nuremberg defendants never aspired to be villains. Rather, they over-identified with an ideological cause and …

Two dramatic criminal trials, one for rape and one for murder and both involving multiple defendants, forever changed the nature of Hawaiian race relations and politics. Filled with twists and turns and unanswered questions, the trials have all the elements of a good mystery. The second of the so-called Massie Affair trials also closes out the courtroom career of America's greatest defense attorney, Clarence Darrow. No trials ever had a more significant effect on a state's history than those that shocked and shook Hawaii in 1931 and 1932.

The Trial Of William 'Big Bill' Haywood, Douglas O. Linder
Faculty Works
The struggle between the Western Federation of Miners and the Western Mine Owners' Association at the turn of the twentieth century might well be called a war. When the state of Idaho prosecuted William Big Bill Haywood in 1907 for ordering the assassination of former governor Frank Steunenberg, fifteen years of union bombings and murders, fifteen years of mine owner intimidation and greed, and fifteen years of government abuse of process and denials of liberties spilled into the national headlines. Featuring James McParland, America's most famous detective; Harry Orchard, America's most notorious mass murderer turned state's witness; Big Bill Haywood, …

The juxtaposition between doing--what we might call "practice"--and reading or thinking about doing--what we might call the study of "theory" or "doctrine" or both--evokes familiar debates on what a law school is and the pedagogical choices made by teachers and administrators.

A Model Of Late Long-Term Potentiation Simulates Aspects Of Memory Maintenance, Paul Smolen
A Model Of Late Long-Term Potentiation Simulates Aspects Of Memory Maintenance, Paul Smolen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Late long-term potentiation (L-LTP) denotes long-lasting strengthening of synapses between neurons. L-LTP appears essential for the formation of long-term memory, with memories at least partly encoded by patterns of strengthened synapses. How memories are preserved for months or years, despite molecular turnover, is not well understood. Ongoing recurrent neuronal activity, during memory recall or during sleep, has been hypothesized to preferentially potentiate strong synapses, preserving memories. This hypothesis has not been evaluated in the context of a mathematical model representing ongoing activity and biochemical pathways important for L-LTP. In this study, ongoing activity was incorporated into two such models - …
