Morphological Diversity Of Medusan Lineages Constrained By Animal–Fluid Interactions, John O. Dabiri, Sean Colin, John H. Costello Jan 2007

Morphological Diversity Of Medusan Lineages Constrained By Animal–Fluid Interactions, John O. Dabiri, Sean Colin, John H. Costello

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Cnidarian medusae, commonly known as jellyfish, represent the earliest known animal taxa to achieve locomotion using muscle power. Propulsion by medusae requires the force of bell contraction to generate forward thrust. However, thrust production is limited in medusae by the primitive structure of their epitheliomuscular cells. This paper demonstrates that constraints in available locomotor muscular force result in a trade-off between high-thrust swimming via jet propulsion and high-efficiency swimming via a combined jet-paddling propulsion. This trade-off is reflected in the morphological diversity of medusae, which exhibit a range of fineness ratios (i.e. the ratio between bell height and diameter) and …

Factor Structure, Internal Consistency, And Interrater Reliability Of The Early Childhood Behavior Problem Screening Scale, J. Ron Nelson, Michael Epstein, Annette Griffith, John Hopper

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The current study examined the initial psychometrics of the Early Childhood Behavior Problem Screening Scale (ECBPSS; Epstein & Nelson, 2006), namely the factor structure and associated internal consistency of factor items of parent and teacher versions as well as interrater reliability. Data came from samples of preschool- and kindergarten- age children from 2 medium-size cities in the U.S. midwest. Separate analyses of the parent and teacher data revealed internalizing and externalizing factors, with Cronbach’s alphas ranging from .83 to .95. Parent and teacher interrater reliability coefficients ranged from .32 to .37. Overall, the results suggest that the 12-item ECBPSS Parent …

Highly Variable Patterns Of Linkage Disequilibrium In Multiple Soybean Populations, D. L. Hyten, Ik-Young Choi, Qijian Song, Randy C. Shoemaker, Randall L. Nelson, Jose M. Costa, James E. Specht, P. B. Cregan

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Prospects for utilizing whole-genome association analysis in autogamous plant populations appear promising due to the reported high levels of linkage disequilibrium (LD). To determine the optimal strategies for implementing association analysis in soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.), we analyzed the structure of LD in three regions of the genome varying in length from 336 to 574 kb. This analysis was conducted in four distinct groups of soybean germplasm: 26 accessions of the wild ancestor of soybean (Glycine soja Seib. et Zucc.); 52 Asian G. max Landraces, the immediate results of domestication from G. soja; 17 Asian Landrace …

Viral Diseases Of The Fetus, Clayton L. Kelling Jan 2007

Viral Diseases Of The Fetus, Clayton L. Kelling

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is one of the most commonly encountered and economically important pathogens of cattle in North America. Since the mid-20th century, BVDV has been recognized as a significant cause of disease of the gastrointestinal system. The impact of BVDV on reproduction was not perceived for another 30 years, when the occurrence of persistent infection in imunotolerant cattle was described.

BVDV infections may occur in cattle as acute illness- that is, bovine viral diarrhea (BVD)-or as a generally chronic condition-mucosal disease. When susceptible regnant cattle are infected with BVDV, transplacental infections usually occur. Transplacental infections may lead …

Prion Interference Is Due To A Reduction In Strain-Specific PrpSc Levels, Jason C. Bartz, Michelle L. Kramer, Meghan H. Sheehan, Jessica A. L. Hutter, Jacob I. Ayers, Richard A. Bessen, Anthony E. Kincaid

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

When two prion strains infect a single host, one strain can interfere with the ability of the other to cause disease but it is not known whether prion replication of the second strain is also diminished. To further investigate strain interference, we infected hamsters in the sciatic nerve with the long-incubation-period transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) agent DY TME prior to superinfection of hamsters with the short-incubation-period HY TME agent. Increases in the interval between TME agent inoculations resulted in an extension of the incubation period of HY TME or a complete block of the ability of the HY TME agent …

Balkan Societies Of "Social Men": Transcending Gender Boundaries, Tarifa

Societies Without Borders

As transgender identities worldwide have begun to receive attention from students of gender and sexuality, a curious Balkan (but more specifically Albanian) tradition of female-to-male transgender ("sworn virgins") surviving to the present day - an obscure and ambiguous theme until recently - is worthy of sociological attention. The "sworn virgin" phenomenon is studied in a larger, ethno-cultural context, zipping through such complicated - and sociologically contentious - notions as patriarchy, blood-feud, destructive entitlement, etc. It is argued that the "sworn virgins" of the Balkans were forced to become "social men," assuming masculine social and family roles, due to specific economic …

The Bumpy Road From Accra To Addis Ababa: Recollections Of An Observer/Participant, Selassie

Societies Without Borders

This article tells the story of the creation of the first pan-African organization - the Organization of African Unity (OAU) - and of some of the most crucial political events of postcolonial African a airs that preceded its establishment, notably the All-African Peoples Conference (AAPC) convened by Ghana's first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Taking the form of an account of an observer-cum-participant of some momentous events in modern African history (such as the AAPC and OAU), it gives a sense of the passionate commitment to African freedom and dignity as well as the desire, on the part of some African …

Pilgrim To Nowhere - The Mysterious Journey Of Robert Rodes, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 2007

Pilgrim To Nowhere - The Mysterious Journey Of Robert Rodes, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

Notre Dame Law Professor Robert Rodes advocates for Pilgrim Law, which is based on the preferential option for the poor. Pilgrim Law is the jurisprudential manifestation of liberation theology. Rodes used Milovan Djilas, author of anti-socialist works such as Conversations with Stalin and The New Class, for insight. Drawing from Djilas, Rodes concludes that class will always count, but count in a nuanced way. This revelation was discovered within Djilas’ self-aware and trenchant analysis amid the reality of the theoretically “classless” societies of Soviet (and Yugoslav) socialism. This empirical insight is what Rodes finds crucial to his Pilgrim Law advocacy. …

Distribution And Conservation Genetics Of The Cow Knob Salamander, Plethodon Punctatus Highton (Caudata: Plethodontidae), Matthew R. Graham Jan 2007

Distribution And Conservation Genetics Of The Cow Knob Salamander, Plethodon Punctatus Highton (Caudata: Plethodontidae), Matthew R. Graham

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Being lungless, plethodontid salamanders respire through their skin and are especially sensitive to environmental disturbances. Habitat fragmentation, low abundance, extreme habitat requirements, and a narrow distribution of less than 70 miles in length, makes one such salamander, Plethodon punctatus, a species of concern (S1) in West Virginia. To better understand this sensitive species, day and night survey hikes were conducted through ideal habitat and coordinate data as well as tail tips (10 to 20 mm in length) were collected. DNA was extracted from the tail tips and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene fragments. …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Morphological Variation And Intergradation Of Chrysemys Picta (Schneider) (Emydidae, Testudines) In West Virginia, Melissa R. Mann Jan 2007

A Taxonomic Study Of The Morphological Variation And Intergradation Of Chrysemys Picta (Schneider) (Emydidae, Testudines) In West Virginia, Melissa R. Mann

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Two subspecies of Chrysemys picta (C. p. picta and C. p. marginata) occur in West Virginia. The Allegheny Mountains have historically separated the distribution of C. p. picta and C. p. marginata; however, intergrades occur where ranges overlap. These intergrades display morphological characteristics that are often intermediate to the original subspecies. Morphological variation of C. picta was examined by comparing specimens from possible areas of C. p. picta x C .p. marginata intergradation in West Virginia to geographic areas that are not exposed to subspecies distribution overlap. Characters traditionally used to separate C. p. picta and C. p. marginata were …

Using Geographic Information Systems To Organize And Coordinate Holistic Watershed Resource Management, John M.S. King Jan 2007

Using Geographic Information Systems To Organize And Coordinate Holistic Watershed Resource Management, John M.S. King

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Thesis research explores the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), such as ESRI’s ArcGIS and Google Earth, to organize and coordinate statewide, regional, and locally led watershed initiatives in West Virginia. Holistic Watershed Resource Management (HWRM) is an innovative collaborative approach to environmental protection designed to synchronize regional and local environmental assessment and restoration efforts. HWRM success is often attributed to an inclusive decision-making process, which seeks to build and coordinate cooperative partnerships among government agencies, private businesses, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations. A case study of the Morris Creek Watershed Association and detailed surveys of over 100 West Virginia …

Paleo-Indians, Alan J. Osborn Jan 2007

Paleo-Indians, Alan J. Osborn

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

First paragraph:

Paleo-Indians were the earliest people to inhabit the Americas. Between thirty and eleven thousand years ago, small, highly mobile groups of huntergatherers extended their hunting areas throughout Beringia (the landmass that joined Siberia and Alaska) and into the Western Hemisphere. This “bridging landmass” emerged slowly from beneath the Bering Sea as more than nine million cubic miles of glacial ice accumulated over southern Alaska, Canada, Labrador, and Greenland. About twenty to eighteen thousand years ago an immense “ice dome” (the Laurentide glacier) towered more than one mile over present-day Hudson Bay. Two lobes of ice spread southward over …

Effects Of Dried Distillers Grains And Equivalent Undegradable Intake Protein Or Ether Extract On Performance And Forage Intake Of Heifers Grazing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures, J. C. Macdonald, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, W. A. Griffin Jan 2007

Effects Of Dried Distillers Grains And Equivalent Undegradable Intake Protein Or Ether Extract On Performance And Forage Intake Of Heifers Grazing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures, J. C. Macdonald, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, W. A. Griffin

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Crossbred heifers (n = 120; BW = 368 kg, SD = 39 kg) were used to determine effects of dried distillers grains (DDG) and relative contributions of undegradable intake protein (UIP) and fat (ether extract, EE) in DDG on ADG and forage intake (FI). Heifers rotationally grazed six 3.5-ha, smooth bromegrass paddocks (IVDMD = 65.7%, CP = 20.8%, UIP = 2.17%, DM basis). Heifers were blocked by previous ADG and allotted to treatments in a 3 × 3 + 1 factorial design. Factors were source and level of supplementation. Supplements were as follows: 1) DDG (UIP = 15.8%, EE = …

Renewed Selection For Heat Loss In Mice: Direct Responses And Correlated Responses In Feed Intake, Body Weight, Litter Size, And Conception Rate, J. M. Mcdonald, Merlyn K. Nielsen Jan 2007

Renewed Selection For Heat Loss In Mice: Direct Responses And Correlated Responses In Feed Intake, Body Weight, Litter Size, And Conception Rate, J. M. Mcdonald, Merlyn K. Nielsen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Divergent selection in mice was renewed in 3 independent replicates for high (MH) and low (ML) heat loss. An unselected control (MC) was maintained in all replicates. Heat loss was measured for individual male mice for 15 h, overnight in direct calorimeters. After 16 initial generations of selection followed by 26 generations of relaxed selection, divergent selection resumed for 9 generations. The realized selection applied was very close to the maximum possible selection according to the criteria and protocol. Selection differentials were greater for high than for low selection due to greater variation in the MH line. When corrected for …

Effect Of Lactobacillus Acidophilus Strain N P51 On Escherichia Coli 0157:H7 Fecal Shedding And Finishing Performance In Beef Feedlot Cattle, R. Peterson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, J. Folmer, S. Hinkley, Rodney A. Moxley, David R. Smith Jan 2007

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Performance and economics of calf feeding and feeding long-yearlings was compared from University of Nebraska research conducted from 1996 to 2004. All calves in these studies were spring born and purchased the subsequent fall. The heaviest calves (292 ± 5 kg) were placed into the feedlot and fed an average of 168 d (calf-feds), whereas the lighter calves (239 ± 5 kg) were placed into a long-yearling system consisting of corn residue grazing followed by summer grazing before entering the feedlot for finishing. Long-yearlings were fed in the feedlot for an average of 90 d. At the beginning of the …

Managing The Risk Of Comparing Estimated Breeding Values Across Flocks Or Herds Through Connectedness: A Review And Application, L. A. Kuehn, Ronald M. Lewis, D. R. Notter Jan 2007

Managing The Risk Of Comparing Estimated Breeding Values Across Flocks Or Herds Through Connectedness: A Review And Application, L. A. Kuehn, Ronald M. Lewis, D. R. Notter

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Comparing predicted breeding values (BV) among animals in different management units (e.g. flocks, herds) is challenging if units have different genetic means. Unbiased estimates of differences in BV may be obtained by assigning base animals to genetic groups according to their unit of origin, but units must be connected to estimate group effects. If many small groups exist, error of BV prediction may be increased. Alternatively, genetic groups can be excluded from the statistical model, which may bias BV predictions. If adequate genetic connections exist among units, bias is reduced. Several measures of connectedness have been proposed, but their relationships …

Serial Reversal Learning And The Evolution Of Behavioral Flexibility In Three Species Of North American Corvids (Gymnorhinus Cyanocephalus, Nucifraga Columbiana, Aphelocoma Californica), Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil, Russell P. Balda Jan 2007

Serial Reversal Learning And The Evolution Of Behavioral Flexibility In Three Species Of North American Corvids (Gymnorhinus Cyanocephalus, Nucifraga Columbiana, Aphelocoma Californica), Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil, Russell P. Balda

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

In serial reversal learning, subjects learn to respond differentially to 2 stimuli. When the task is fully acquired, reward contingencies are reversed, requiring the subject to relearn the altered associations. This alternation of acquisition and reversal can be repeated many times, and the ability of a species to adapt to this regimen has been considered as an indication of behavioral flexibility. Serial reversal learning of 2-choice discriminations was contrasted in 3 related species of North American corvids: pinyon jays (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus), which are highly social; Clark’s nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana), which are relatively solitary but specialized for …

The Ecologically Noble Savage Debate, Raymond Hames Jan 2007

The Ecologically Noble Savage Debate, Raymond Hames

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Debate around the ecologically noble savage represents two markedly different research threads. The first addresses the issue of conservation among native peoples and narrowly focuses on case studies of resource use of ethnographic, archaeological, or historic sources. The second thread is broader and more humanistic and political in orientation and considers the concept of ecological nobility in terms of identity, ecological knowledge, ideology, and the deployment of ecological nobility as a political tool by native peoples and conservation groups.

Genetic Parameters For Yield Traits Of Cows Treated Or Not Treated With Bovine Somatotropin, A. Al-Seaf, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic correlations between yield traits of cows treated with bovine somatotropin (bST) and the same yield traits of untreated cows. Lactation records from registered Holstein cows were divided by parity into 3 data sets: 1, 2, and 3 through 5. Approximately 10% of the records in each data set were from cows treated with bST. The numbers of records of treated and untreated cows in the data sets were 4,337 and 48,765; 3,730 and 37,796; and 3,645 and 33,957. Two-trait animal models (records for cows treated or not treated) were used to …
