Fluvial Geomorphologic And Hydrodynamic Assessment In The Tidal Portion Of The Lower Rio Grande River, Us-Mexico Borderland, A. Ernest, B. Bokhim, N. B. Chang, I. J. Huang
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
With fast population growth and economic development in the US-Mexico Borderland, water diversion and usages has reduced the flow substantially in the Low Rio Grande River (LRGR). Tidal portion of the LRGR has posed an environmental drought issue since 1993 and the channel clogged with the invasion of non-native plants also causes environmental problems. As a result of the intensity of these natural and manmade factors, the Rio Grande stopped flowing to the sea in February 2001. The flows were reduced to a point that they were unable to push out the sand deposited at the mouth. Geomorphologic evolution in …

Impact Of Trivalent Arsenicals On Selenoprotein Synthesis, Denis Ganyc, Sarah Talbot, Fanta Konate, Sarah Jackson, Brian Schanen, William Cullen, William T. Self
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
BACKGROUND: Exposure to arsenic has been associated with development of skin, lung, bladder, liver, and kidney cancer. Recent evidence suggests that an increase in oxidative stress in cells treated with arsenicals represents the molecular mechanism behind arsenic-induced carcinogenesis. Selenium, in the form of selenocysteine, is necessary for the activity of several enzymes with a role in defense against reactive oxygen species. A mutual sparing effect between arsenic and selenium has been shown in animal studies when both metalloids are present in high concentrations. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether changes in selenoprotein synthesis may be an underlying mechanism behind arsenic-induced carcinogenesis, we …
Dune Vegetation Fertilization By Nesting Sea Turtles, Laura B. Hannan, James D. Roth, Llewellyn M. Ehrhart, John F. Weishampel
Dune Vegetation Fertilization By Nesting Sea Turtles, Laura B. Hannan, James D. Roth, Llewellyn M. Ehrhart, John F. Weishampel
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Sea turtle nesting presents a potential pathway to subsidize nutrient-poor dune ecosystems, which provide the nesting habitat for sea turtles. To assess whether this positive feedback between dune plants and turtle nests exists, we measured N concentration and delta N-15 values in dune soils, leaves from a common dune plant ( sea oats [Uniola paniculata]), and addled eggs of loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and green turtles ( Chelonia mydas) across a nesting gradient ( 200 - 1050 nests/km) along a 40.5-km stretch of beach in east central Florida, USA. The delta N-15 levels were higher in loggerhead than green turtle eggs, …
Modified Beckmann-Kirchhoff Scattering Model For Rough Surfaces With Large Incident And Scattering Angles, James E. Harvey, Andrey Krywonos, Cynthia L. Vernold
Modified Beckmann-Kirchhoff Scattering Model For Rough Surfaces With Large Incident And Scattering Angles, James E. Harvey, Andrey Krywonos, Cynthia L. Vernold
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Surface scattering effects are merely diffraction phenomena resulting from random phase variations induced on the reflected wave-front by microtopographic surface features. The Rayleigh-Rice and Beckmann-Kirchhoff theories are commonly used to predict surface scattering behavior. However, the Rayleigh-Rice vector perturbation theory is limited to smooth surfaces, and the classical Beckmann-Kirchhoff theory contains a paraxial assumption that confines its applicability to small incident and scattering angles. The recent development of a linear systems formulation of nonparaxial scalar diffraction phenomena, indicating that diffracted radiance is a fundamental quantity predicted by scalar diffraction theory, has led to a reexamination of the classical Beckmann-Kirchhoff scattering …
Gene Expression And The Evolution Of Phenotypic Diversity In Social Wasps, Eric A. Hoffman, Michael Ad Goodisman
Gene Expression And The Evolution Of Phenotypic Diversity In Social Wasps, Eric A. Hoffman, Michael Ad Goodisman
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Background: Organisms are capable of developing different phenotypes by altering the genes they express. This phenotypic plasticity provides a means for species to respond effectively to environmental conditions. One of the most dramatic examples of phenotypic plasticity occurs in the highly social hymenopteran insects ( ants, social bees, and social wasps), where distinct castes and sexes all arise from the same genes. To elucidate how variation in patterns of gene expression affects phenotypic variation, we conducted a study to simultaneously address the influence of developmental stage, sex, and caste on patterns of gene expression in Vespula wasps. Furthermore, we compared …
Rehabilitation Of A 49 Year-Old Male Who Underwent A Right Knee Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction With Moderate To Severe Degenerative Joint Disease Of The Left Knee, Roy W. Osborn
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Background/purpose: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is reported to be one of the most common and most serious injuries among physically active individuals, There are a multitude of articles addressing rehabilitation following ACL reconstruction, but there is no clear "best method' identified in the evidence, Subjects with a combination of ACL rupture and degenerative joint disease are less frequent in occurrence, and also lack evidence to identify the most appropriate rehabilitation method.
Description: This case study provides the details of the first 8 weeks of rehabilitation for a 49 year old male subject who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction of …
Can Deterrence Be Tailored?, M. Elaine Bunn
Can Deterrence Be Tailored?, M. Elaine Bunn
Strategic Forums
Deterrence, the hallmark of Cold War–era security, needs to be adapted to fit the more volatile security environment of the 21st century. The Bush administration has outlined a concept for tailored deterrence to address the distinctive challenges posed by advanced military competitors, regional powers armed with weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and nonstate terrorist networks—while assuring allies and dissuading potential competitors.

Policy Making And The New Medicine: Managing A Magnificent Obsession, George P. Smith Ii
Policy Making And The New Medicine: Managing A Magnificent Obsession, George P. Smith Ii
Scholarly Articles
Scientific issues become - inevitably - political issues because of one principal fact: they put in focus the extent to which the government can restrict private medical research undertakings - either in the name of generational safety, morality or the public good. The multiple and varied concerns of applying the New Medicine, derived as such from the New Biology, conduce - essentially - to a suspicion continued reductionism in the biological analysis of humans will erode the notions of autonomy, dignity and personal integrity that have traditionally justified the constitutional protection of civil liberties. Driven by painful technologies and sciences, …
Client Home Or Agency Office? How Do We Decide Where To See Our Clients?, Harriet W. Meek
Client Home Or Agency Office? How Do We Decide Where To See Our Clients?, Harriet W. Meek
Journal of Family Strengths
Decisions about location of services sometimes appear to be made more on the basis of agency preference than assessment of need. Today the profession has enough experience with service locations that it is possible to develop more clear guidelines for the decision about where work with clients should take place, in the client’s home or nearby community or in the practitioner’s office. This study was conducted with two purposes; 1) to identify at a higher level of evidence the various reasons for seeing clients in their own homes and nearby community setting; and 2) to demonstrate how readily available information …

Real-World Face Recognition: The Importance Of Surface Reflectance Properties, Richard Russell, Pawan Sinha
Psychology Faculty Publications
The face recognition task we perform most often in everyday experience is the identification of people with whom we are familiar. However, because of logistical challenges, most studies focus on unfamiliar-face recognition, wherein subjects are asked to match or remember images of unfamiliar people's faces. Here we explore the importance of two facial attributes - shape and surface reflectance - in the context of a familiar-face recognition task. In our experiment, subjects were asked to recognise color images of the faces of their friends. The images were manipulated such that only reflectance or only shape information was useful for recognizing …

Why "Managing" Biodiversity Will Fail: An Alternative Approach To Sustainable Exploitation For International Law, Kyle Ash
Animal Law Review
The role of humans in mass extinctions necessitates an assessment of the collective human psychology responsible for the degradation of Earth’s life support systems. In this paper, the Author will cite instruments and discourse relevant to international environmental law to illustrate how an antiquated conception of biological hierarchies is condoned whenever other species are mentioned. As reflected in the law, humans do not just believe we are existentially unconnected with the rest of life, but that we have more right to live on the planet. This, ironically, allows us to rationalize activities that destroy the planet, even for ourselves. Nature …

A Contractarian View Of Animal Rights: Insuring Against The Possibility Of Being A Non-Human Animal, Julie Hilden
A Contractarian View Of Animal Rights: Insuring Against The Possibility Of Being A Non-Human Animal, Julie Hilden
Animal Law Review
Contemporary research results regarding non-human animals’ intelligence, emotional life, and capacity for reciprocity strongly suggest the need for a sweeping re-evaluation of their legal status as mere property. In this essay, the author will contend that the contractarian theory of philosopher John Rawls provides an ideal basis for this re-evaluation. Rawls’ theory holds that the just rules for a given real-world society are those that would rationally be chosen behind an imaginary “veil of ignorance,” where the deciding parties are placed in an “original position” in which they have no idea of their personal qualities or the positions they will …
Animal Testing In Cosmetics: Recent Developments In The European Union And The United States, Laura Donnellan
Animal Testing In Cosmetics: Recent Developments In The European Union And The United States, Laura Donnellan
Animal Law Review
Animal welfare has become a recent issue in the policy of the European Union. Since the creation of the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1957, the welfare of animals was only considered in relation to the proper functioning of the common market. Animals were seen as commodities whose interests were intertwined with agricultural and environmental policy. Over the years, the position has changed somewhat. Although a Treaty basis exists for animal welfare, the protection of animals has not yet been recognized as an important policy area of its own, and thus worthy of legal protection. As a positive step in …

Biology And Phylogeny Of The Cassidinae Gyllenhal Sensu Lato (Tortoise And Leaf-Mining Beetles) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Caroline S. Chaboo
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
A parsimony analysis was undertaken to test subfamily and tribal group concepts of Cassidinae (ca. 2000 genera, ca. 6000 species). An integrated account of their biology was synthesized from the primary literature. A detailed morphological study of adults, using Hemisphaerota palmarum Boheman as a model, formed the basis for evaluating characters previously utilized and for defining novel characters. The data matrix comprised 210 characters (from adults and immature stages, ecology and behavior), 6 outgroups, and 98 ingroup exemplar species (representing 94 genera and 39 of the 43 recognized cassidine tribes). Results support the monophyly of Cassidinae and place it as …
Individual Identification Of Polar Bears By Whisker Spot Patterns, Carlos Anderson
Individual Identification Of Polar Bears By Whisker Spot Patterns, Carlos Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many types of ecological studies require identification of individual animals. I developed and evaluated an automated identification system for polar bears (Ursus maritimus) based on their whisker spot patterns. First, I measured the reliability of using whisker spot patterns for identification from polar bear photographs taken in western Hudson Bay. This analysis involved estimating the complexity of each whisker spot pattern in terms of its information content. I found that 98% of patterns contained enough information to be reliable, and this result varied little among three different observers. Based on these results, I implemented a computer-aided identification system for polar …

Public Writing Inside And Outside The Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Activist Rhetorics, Eileen Medeiros
Public Writing Inside And Outside The Classroom: A Comparative Analysis Of Activist Rhetorics, Eileen Medeiros
Open Access Dissertations
Public writing, or writing in the public sphere, is being heralded as the next step in composition studies. Embedded in public writing is the assumption that it fosters civic engagement and effects social change, the same assumptions that were made about service-learning in the 1990's--assumptions that have turned out to be incorrect, actually. This study is an investigation of those assumptions. Using a comparative methodology, this study examines the types of writing that students are producing in five different public writing classes located around the country and juxtaposes that writing with the writing produced by members of five national activist …
Addressing Issues In The Detection Of Gene-Environment Interaction Through The Study Of Conduct Disorder, Elizabeth Prom-Wormley
Addressing Issues In The Detection Of Gene-Environment Interaction Through The Study Of Conduct Disorder, Elizabeth Prom-Wormley
Theses and Dissertations
This work addresses issues in the study of gene-environment interaction (GxE) through research of conduct disorder (CD) among adolescents and extends the recent report of significant GxE and subsequent replication studies. A sub-sample of 1,299 individual participants/649 twin pairs and their parents from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent and Behavioral Development was used for whom Monoamine Oxidase A (MAOA) genotype, diagnosis of CD, maternal antisocial personality symptoms, and household neglect were obtained. This dissertation (1) tested for GxE by gender using MAOA and childhood adversity using multiple approaches to CD measurement and model assessment, (2) determined whether other mechanisms …
