Real Teaching And Real Learning Vs Narrative Myths About Education, Marshall W. Gregory
Real Teaching And Real Learning Vs Narrative Myths About Education, Marshall W. Gregory
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
All real classrooms are saturated in the fictional narratives about education from TV and movies that swirl about thickly and persistently in western culture, yet the influence that these fictions exert on real teachers and real students is seldom examined. This article argues that since these fictional narratives nearly always deal in recycled stereotypes of both students and teachers, and that since they seldom receive critical attention, the influence they exert on real teachers and real students is to mislead, confuse, and impoverish their evaluations of and expectations about the nature of genuine education.

Artificial Minds And Human Religions: An Illustration Of The Diversity Of Possible Intersections Between Religious Thought And Practice And Technological Advances, James F. Mcgrath
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
A survey of recent science-fiction would show that the theme of this paper -artificial minds and human religions -is one that is of significant interest in our time... Furthermore, science-fiction provides an opportunity to explore future possibilities, and exploring where technology might take us and how religious traditions might respond seems more advisable than waiting until developments actually occur, and then scrambling to respond.

In The Name Of Service: Exploring The Social Enterprise Workplace Experience Through The Lens Of Servant-Leadership, Virginia Klamon
International Journal of Servant-Leadership
While the profit motive has significantly shaped the language and practice of business and bounded the interpretative frame of entrepreneurship, a profoundly new form of entrepreneurial organization is emerging: the social enterprise. Social entrepreneurs are reimagining the capitalist paradigm, reinventing the field of entrepreneurship, and redefining the social sector in promising new ways. Individuals fluent in the language of business are creating positive social impact and, at the same time, striving for commercial excellence. Whether by pioneering the business of micro-lending, distributing fair-trade products, or employing at-risk adults, social entrepreneurs are passionate about addressing otherwise unmet societal needs. They target …

A Review Of Leg Ornamentation In Male Wolf Spiders, With The Description Of A New Species From Australia, Artoria Schizocoides (Araneae, Lycosidae), Volker W. Framenau, Eileen Hebets
Eileen Hebets Publications
Morphological modifications of the first pair of legs in addition to widespread color variations of these legs among males of closely related species have been reported in a variety of spiders. Here, the evidence for sexual dimorphism in male foreleg morphology within wolf spiders (family Lycosidae) is reviewed and shown to occur in a number of species belonging to at least seven genera in five subfamilies: Alopecosa, Hogna, Schizocosa (all Lycosinae) Pirata (Piratinae), Evippa, (Evippinae), Pardosa (Pardosinae) and Artoria (Artoriinae). These modifications, often in combination with distinct dark pigmentation, can be divided into three major groups: leg elongation, segment …

The Tension Between Fire Risk And Carbon Storage: Evaluating U.S. Carbon And Fire Management Strategies Through Ecosystem Models, C M. Girod, George C. Hurtt, Steve Frolking, John Aber, A W. King
Earth Sciences
Fire risk and carbon storage are related environmental issues because fire reduction results in carbon storage through the buildup of woody vegetation, and stored carbon is a fuel for fires. The sustainability of the U.S. carbon sink and the extent of fire activity in the next 100 yr depend in part on the type and effectiveness of fire reduction employed. Previous studies have bracketed the range of dynamics from continued fire reduction to the complete failure of fire reduction activities. To improve these estimates, it is necessary to explicitly account for fire reduction in terrestrial models. A new fire reduction …

The Public Funding Of Health Care: A Brief Historical Overview Of Principles, Practices, And Motives, Paul Carrick
The Public Funding Of Health Care: A Brief Historical Overview Of Principles, Practices, And Motives, Paul Carrick
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Nationally sponsored programs designed to fund health care for the general public are largely a twentieth century phenomenon. Yet a long glance backward at the medical and public health history of Western civilization, extending from the ancient Greeks to the twentieth century, reveals earlier periods when governments, religious institutions, and other groups provided some measure of medical relief for the sick, the poor, and the homeless. In this essay, I will provide not an exhaustive but rather an illustrative account of this oft forgotten fact. My objectives are threefold.
First, to remind us that the active concern of society for …

Role Of Protein Kinase Phosphorylation On Sert Oligomerization: A Novel Mechanistic View, Eric Richard Buck
Role Of Protein Kinase Phosphorylation On Sert Oligomerization: A Novel Mechanistic View, Eric Richard Buck
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The serotonin transporter (SERT) is the primary mechanism for the termination of synaptic signaling. It is of clinical relevance because it is a high-affinity target for therapeutics such as anti-depressants (SSRIs) and drugs of abuse such as cocaine, amphetamine, and 3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy). It is also seen as a protein potentially involved in the etiology underlying disorders such as clinical depression, autism, anxiety-related disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and anorexia nervosa among others. SERT has also been found to be a target of protein kinases that exert their effects through phosphorylation. For example, activation of protein kinase C (PKC) decreases SERT …
Reducing Lung Disease In Cystic Fibrosis: Model Systems And Anti-Inflammatory Treatment, Scotty Mcglothlin Buff
Reducing Lung Disease In Cystic Fibrosis: Model Systems And Anti-Inflammatory Treatment, Scotty Mcglothlin Buff
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Cystic fibrosis (CF), the most common lethal autosomal recessive disease in Caucasians resulting in a median life span of approximately 35 years, is caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR). The primary cause of morbidity and mortality is respiratory failure caused by progressive obstructive lung disease. CF airway disease is characterized by the abundance of pro inflammatory cells, chemokines and cytokines with a deficiency of regulatory/anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10 (lL10). We hypothesized that CF airway obstruction originates from excessive inflammation and gene transfer of IL-I0 would decrease inflammation in the airways of mice infected with Pseudomonas …

Fish Traps On Ancient Shores, Eric Stephen White
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Archaeological investigations associated with the Lake Cahuilla fish traps have been restricted due to the lack of excavation and experimentation. This thesis addresses a new line of researches, which incorporates not only experimentation and excavation, but also the combination of fish trap design and fish behavior, to more fully explain the working mechanics of ancient fish traps. Not only are these issues examined, but other natural phenomenon, that affect the archaeological record, and its understanding are examined. This thesis relies heavily on biology for its conclusions.

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute
Dissecting development of neuronal connections is critical for understanding neuronal function in both normal and diseased states. Charting the development of the multitude of connections is a monumental task, since a given neuron typically receives hundreds of convergent inputs from other neurons and provides divergent outputs for hundreds of other neurons. Although progress is being made utilizing various mutants and/or genetic constructs expressing fluorescent proteins like GFP, substantial work remains before a database documenting the development and final location of the neuronal pathways in an adult animal is completed. The vast majority of developing neurons cannot be specifically labeled with …

Control System Design And Simulation Of Spacecraft Formations Via Virtual Formation Approach, Pavan Donepudi
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The problem of formation control of multiple spacecraft using the virtual structure approach is studied. The thesis first summarizes the progress made in the area of spacecraft formation control and then provides an overview of the virtual structure method. Modifying earlier established control design techniques, new feedback laws are constructed to control both the rotational and translational motion of a group of spacecraft. Several computer simulations are performed to illustrate the effectiveness of the modified control laws. The ephemeris and attitude data files generated via Matlab are exported to Satellite Tool Kit (STK) to create 3D animations. Various formation scenarios …

Bear Lake Basin : History, Geology, Biology, People, Patsy Palacios, Chris Luecke, Justin Robinson
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Bear Lake is a large, deep lake located on the border of Utah and Idaho in Rich County Utah and Bear Lake County Idaho. It was formed through seismic activity along a fault on the eastern side of the lake. Tectonic shifts of the plates along this fault resulted in a lake basin that is over 200 ft deep along the eastern shore with a gradual slope to the western shore. The lake water has high concentrations of calcium carbonate because of high levels of evaporation typical of this semi-arid climate. These high concentrations of calcium carbonate give the lake …

Birds And Mammals Of The Bear Lake Basin, Utah, Patsy Palacios, Chris Luecke, Justin Robinson
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
Many bird species use Bear Lake seasonally or during migrations. Herons, egrets, sandpipers, rails, pelicans, geese, coots, grebes, Tundra swans and osprey are common visitors throughout the year. During the spring months of April through June the area becomes the primary breeding grounds for the burrowing owl, gray flycatcher, long-billed curlew, peregrine falcon, and the black-throated gray warbler. Early in the summer months, several species of mergansers and diving ducks converge on the rocky shorelines to fish as the newly hatched Bear Lake sculpin occupy shallow waters during this period. During winter the area becomes critical habitat for the American …

Biological Resources Of The Bear Lake Basin, Utah, Patsy Palacios, Chris Luecke, Justin Robinson
Natural Resources and Environmental Issues
The Bear Lake basin has a range of land types that provide habitat for aquatic, riparian, and terrestrial wildlife and plant species. Near the lake a limited ring of semi aquatic plants grow in association with spring and creek waters. Agriculture lands are used as pasture and to grow feed crops such as hay and alfalfa. Larger stream inflows host riparian and aquatic meadow plants. The low hills of the valley support sagebrush, grasslands, pinion, juniper, maple, and brushy communities. In the higher mountains brushes give way to large tree complexes of aspen, spruce, pine, and their associated undergrowths. The …

Distaff discontent with matrimony has been a subject of literary treatment throughout the ages. In Classical, Renaissance, and Golden Age times, the emphasis was often on the cleverness of the wife in securing and protecting a lover—one who could supplement or even fulfill completely the husband’s amatory role. Certainly, there was a diversity of reasons for the wife’s discontent and her need for remedial action. For example, in Apuleius’s The Golden Ass, the problem is that the wife has a more zesty nature than does her spouse (IX, 407). In Boccaccio’s Decameron, the husband’s neglect of his wife …
