Islamic Finance For European Muslims: The Diversity Management Of Shari`Ah-Compliant Transactions, Kilian Bälz
Islamic Finance For European Muslims: The Diversity Management Of Shari`Ah-Compliant Transactions, Kilian Bälz
Chicago Journal of International Law
This Article argues that developments in Islamic finance must be analyzed within a broader framework. First, Islamic financing transactions must be integrated with and adapted to the overall legal and regulatory framework of the prospective jurisdiction in which the transaction will take place. Islamic financial services, in most jurisdictions, are subject to state law. Integrating and adapting transactions is of particular importance with regard to retail products that are based on an industrialization of the banking business. In Germany, regulation works differently from the UK and may be less susceptible to catering to the needs of ethnic and religious minorities. …

Structure Of Food Attitudes: Replication Of Aikman, Crites, & Fabrigar (2006), Shelley Aikman, Stephen Crites Jr.
Departmental Papers (Psych)
Recent research by Aikman, Crites, and Fabrigar [(2006). Beyond affect and cognition: Identification of the informational bases of food attitudes. Journal of Applied Social Psychology, 36, 340-382] suggests that food attitudes are comprised of five distinct informational bases: positive affect (e.g., calm, comforted), negative affect (e.g., guilty, ashamed), abstract cognitive qualities (e.g., healthy, natural), general sensory qualities (e.g., taste, smell), and specific sensory qualities (e.g., salty, greasy). The Aikman et al. (2006) research was conducted at a university on the US-Mexican border and consisted primarily of self-reported Latino participants. The present research replicates the previously identified food attitude structure at …

Can Reinforcement Induce Children To Falsely Incriminate Themselves?, F. Billings, Tanya Taylor, James Burns, Deb Corey, Sena Garven, James Wood
Departmental Papers (Psych)
This study examined whether reinforcement can induce children to falsely incriminate themselves. Ninety-nine children in kindergarten through third grade were questioned regarding the staged theft of a toy. Half received reinforcement for self-incriminating responses. Within 4 minutes reinforced children made 52% false admissions of guilty knowledge concerning the theft, and 43% false admissions of having witnessed it. Corresponding figures for controls were 36% and 25%. Twelve percent of children admitted to participating in the theft, but the effect of reinforcement was only marginally significant. The findings suggest that reinforcement can sometimes induce children to falsely implicate themselves in wrongdoing.

Avian influenza (AI) is a viral disease of poultry, caused by influenzavirus A, classified in the family Orthomyxoviridiae. The influenza A viruses maintained in birds are commonly referred to as avian influenza viruses (AIVs). The AIVs are antigenically, genetically, and biologically diverse, are found worldwide in birds, and infect a variety of avian species.

The Impact Of Internet Usage On Adolescent Self-Identity Development, Janet H. Long, Guo-Ming Chen
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study examines the impact of Internet usage on the self-identity development in 10 students between the ages of 12 and 18. Using Erickson's Ego Identity Theory, the computer mediated communication (CMC) practices of students from private and public schools are evaluated through in-depth interviews. All students are frequent users of instant relay chat (IRC) and have a minimum of one year of experience with Instant Messenger. Identity development is examined using questions generated from a modified form of the Objective Measure of Ego-Identity Status developed by Adams and Ryan (2000). The four dimensions of Identity Development examined here are …

To control the rate of release of methylprednisolone (MP) in lysosomes, new dextran–MP conjugates with peptide linkers were synthesized and characterized. Methylprednisolone succinate (MPS) was attached to dextran 25 kDa using linkers with 1–5 Gly residues. The release characteristics of the conjugates in pH 4.0 and 7.4 buffers, blood, liver lysosomes, and various lysosomal proteinases were determined using a size-exclusion and/or a newly developed reversed-phase HPLC method capable of simultaneous quantitation of MP, MPS, and all five possible MPS-peptidyl intermediates. We synthesized conjugates with ≥90% purity and 6.9–9.5% (w/w) degree of MP substitution. The conjugates were stable at pH 4.0, …

Investigating Problem Based Learning In The Science Classroom, Andrea Szozda
Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters
The level of engagement among students during problem-based learning (PBL) was investigated. PBL is a teaching strategy that provides students with real-life experiences which in tum creates enthusiasm among students and provides students with a deeper level of understanding of the content. The level of engagement was determined by a triangulation of data that included student reflections, observational data and classroom discussions. During the PBL lessons students were more actively involved in their learning and the results indicated that students were more engaged during PBL lessons than traditional lecture-based lessons.

Bisphenol A Exposure In Utero Disrupts Early Oogenesis In The Mouse, Martha Susiarjo, Terry J. Hassold, Edward A. Freeman, Patricia A. Hunt
Biology Faculty/Staff Publications
Estrogen plays an essential role in the growth and maturation of the mammalian oocyte, and recent studies suggest that it also influences follicle formation in the neonatal ovary. In the course of studies designed to assess the effect of the estrogenic chemical bisphenol A (BPA) on mammalian oogenesis, we uncovered an estrogenic effect at an even earlier stage of oocyte development—at the onset of meiosis in the fetal ovary. Pregnant mice were treated with low, environmentally relevant doses of BPA during mid-gestation to assess the effect of BPA on the developing ovary. Oocytes from exposed female fetuses displayed gross aberrations …

Testing Ecological And Behavioral Correlates Of Nest Predation, Joseph J. Fontaine, Mireille Martel, Helen M. Markland, Alina M. Niklison, Karie L. Decker, Thomas E. Martin
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
Variation in nest predation rates among bird species are assumed to reflect differences in risk that are specific to particular nest sites. Theoretical and empirical studies suggest that parental care behaviors can evolve in response to nest predation risk and thereby differ among ecological conditions that vary in inherent risk. However, parental care also can influence predation risk. Separating the effects of nest predation risk inherent to a nest site from the risk imposed by parental strategies is needed to understand the evolution of parental care. Here we identify correlations between risks inherent to nest sites, and risk associated with …

Introduction To Establishing Medical Reality: Essays In The Metaphysics And Epistemology Of Biomedical Science, Harold Kincaid, Jennifer Mckitrick
Introduction To Establishing Medical Reality: Essays In The Metaphysics And Epistemology Of Biomedical Science, Harold Kincaid, Jennifer Mckitrick
Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications
Medicine has been a very fruitful source of significant issues for philosophy over the last 30 years. The vast majority of the issues discussed have been normative—they have been problems in morality and political philosophy that now make up the field called bioethics. However, biomedical science presents many other philosophical questions that have gotten relatively little attention, particularly topics in metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of science. This volume focuses on problems in these areas as they surface in biomedical science.
Important changes in philosophy make biomedical science an especially interesting area of inquiry. Contemporary philosophy is largely naturalistic in approach—it …

Genomic DNA of Blastocystis isolates released into 0.1 Triton X-100 was suitable for amplification and yielded similar results as the genomic DNA extracted with standard kit. The specific B. hominis primers (BH1: GCT TAT CTG GTT GAT CCT GCC AGT and BH2: TGA TCC TTC CGC AGG TTC ACC TAC A) successfully produced the PCR product of about 1,770 bp with all the 7 Blastocystis isolates tested. The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns yielded by 13 out of 25 restriction endonucleases showed that the 7 isolates could be grouped into 4 subgroups: subgroup-1 consisted of isolate C; subgroup-2 of …

Maldef And The Legal Investment In A Multi-Colored America, Tom I. Romero
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This is an essay that comes out of a roundtable on Mexican American Citizenship at the 2006 Annual Meetings of the Western History Association. This essay focuses on the early legal strategy of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) to tentatively explore the role that color consciousness played in MALDEF's understanding of law and jurisprudence. Accordingly, the essay briefly explores the manner by which the organization began to conceptualize the non-Whiteness of Mexican Americans as a matter of law in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The analysis is therefore suggestive of not only an important transformation …
