A Decade Comparison Of Preterm Motor Performance At Age 4, Mary C. Sullivan, Kathleen Hawes

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

This was a prospective longitudinal study of two cohorts comprised of one full term and three premature infant groups born 10 years apart. Birth cohort, perinatal morbidity, and birth weight effects were investigated at age 4. Cohort 1 (1985–1989) had longer gestation, higher birth weight, and better Apgar scores than Cohort 2 (1996–1999), which had more intraventricular hemorrhage and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Cohort and perinatal morbidity group, but not birth weight, predicted motor scores. Preterm Cohort 2 children had better oral motor, fine motor, and total motor scores, but lower visual motor integration scores than Cohort 1. Motor problems continue to …

Assessing Library Skills: A First Step To Information Literacy, Joanna M. Burkhardt Jan 2007

Assessing Library Skills: A First Step To Information Literacy, Joanna M. Burkhardt

Technical Services Faculty Publications

As part of the University of Rhode Island Libraries' "Comprehensive Plan for Information Literacy," a three-credit class in the skills and concepts of information literacy was first offered in the fall of 1999. More than 1,000 undergraduate students have taken the class since that time. A pre-test was given at the beginning of each semester, followed up by a post-test at the end. The pre- and post-test results were analyzed to determine: (1) whether students improved their test scores over the course of the semester, (2) which concepts and skills students mastered, and (3) where the course might need revision …

What Happened On Deliberation Day, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie, David Schkade Jan 2007

What Happened On Deliberation Day, Cass R. Sunstein, Reid Hastie, David Schkade

Articles

What are the effects of deliberation about legal and political issues by like-minded people? This Essay reports the results of an experimental investigation involving sixty-three citizens in Colorado. Groups from Boulder, a predominantly liberal city, met to discuss global warming, affirmative action, and civil unions for same-sex couples. Groups from Colorado Springs, a predominately conservative city, discussed the same issues. The major effect of deliberation was to make group members more extreme in their views than they were before they started to talk. Liberals became more liberal on all three issues; conservatives became more conservative. As a result of intragroup …

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Intergenerational Equity, Arden Rowell, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2007

On Discounting Regulatory Benefits: Risk, Money, And Intergenerational Equity, Arden Rowell, Cass R. Sunstein

Articles

There is an elaborate debate over the practice of "discounting" regulatory benefits, such as environmental improvements and decreased risks to health and life, when those benefits will not be enjoyed until some future date. Economists tend to think that, as a general rule, such benefits should be discounted in the same way as money; many philosophers and lawyers doubt that conclusion on empirical and normative grounds. Both sides frequently neglect a simple point: if regulators are interested in how people currently value risks that will not come to fruition for a significant time, they can use people's current willingness to …

An Experimental Investigation Of Literacy In A Secondary Education Science Classroom, Heather M. Nettnin Jan 2007

An Experimental Investigation Of Literacy In A Secondary Education Science Classroom, Heather M. Nettnin

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Scientific concepts are not the only content learned in the science classroom. Students cannot learn science with out literacy skills. The study involved the implementation of literacy strategies in a high school chemistry classroom. The strategies involved reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. Students were asked to draw from their prior knowledge and possible misconceptions of reality when considering new content. The use of the literacy strategies in the science classroom promoted original thought amongst the students and supported group and class discussions. Students were fully engaged and they actively participated in the activities. As a result students were consistently …

The Commuter, Eric Parkison

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"This is just a story. That's it, no more, no less. It will begin and then at some point, end. And, in the fashion of stories, it will involve characters, and maybe a plot. There will be a middle that has details and hints at ideas, motives behind the authoring of said tale. It will begin, I think, when I tell you that Bob was completely unhappy with his life. He didn't know that, but it's true. His wife suspected, but would never state it out loud. His two …

Vico’S New Science Of Interpretation: Beyond Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Hermeneutics Of Suspicion, David Ingram Jan 2007

Vico’S New Science Of Interpretation: Beyond Philosophical Hermeneutics And The Hermeneutics Of Suspicion, David Ingram

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The article situates Vico's hermeneutical science of history between a hermeneutics of suspicion (Ricoeur, Habermas, Freud) and a redemptive hermeneutics (Gadamer, Benjamin). It discusses Vico's early writings and his ambivalent trajectory from Cartesian rationalism to counter-enlightenment historicist and critic of natural law reasoning. The complexity of Vico's thinking belies some of the popular treatments of his thought developed by Isaiah Berlin and others.

Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus) Jan 2007

Gray Wolf (Canis Lupus)

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Second only to humans in adapting to climate extremes, gray wolves once ranged from coast to coast and from Alaska to Mexico in North America. They were absent from the East and the Southeast, which were occupied by red wolves (Canis rufus), and from the large deserts in the southwestern States. By the early 20th century, government-sponsored predator control programs and declines in prey brought gray wolves to near extinction in the lower 48 States.

Wolf groups, or packs, typically include a breeding pair (the alpha pair), their offspring, and other non-breeding adults. Wolves are capable of mating …

Wolf Recovery In North America

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Before the arrival of European settlers, wolves ranged widely across the continent, from coast to coast and from Canada to Mexico. Two species are found in North America, the gray wolf, with its various subspecies, and the red wolf, found in the southeastern United States.

Wolves play an important role as predators in the ecosystems they inhabit. They feed primarily on large mammals, such as deer and elk, removing sick and injured animals from the populations. Wolves are highly social, living in packs and hunting and raising young cooperatively.

As the country was settled, native prey species declined and the …

Montana Gray Wolf Conservation And Management 2006 Annual Report, Carolyn A. Sime, V. Asher, L. Bradley, K. Laudon, M. Ross, J. Trapp, M. Atkinson, L. Handegard, J. Steuber

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

MONTANA EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Wolf recovery in Montana began in the early 1980’s. Gray wolves increased in number and expanded their distribution in Montana because of natural emigration from Canada and a successful federal effort that reintroduced wolves into Yellowstone National Park (YNP) and the wilderness areas of central Idaho. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) approved the Montana Gray Wolf Conservation and Management Plan in early 2004, but delisting in the northern Rockies (NRM) was delayed. When federal funding became available later in 2004, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) began managing wolves in northwestern Montana under a cooperative …
