The Dynamics Of Social Capital And Conflict Management In Multiple Resource Regimes: A Case Of The Southwestern Highlands Of Uganda, Pascal C. Sanginga, Rick N. Kamugisha, Andrienne M. Martin

All UNF Research

Increasingly, social capital, defined as shared norms, trust, and the horizontal and vertical social networks that facilitate coordination and cooperation for mutually beneficial collective action, is seen as an important asset upon which people rely to manage natural resources and resolve conflicts. This paper uses empirical data from households and community surveys and case studies, to examine the role, strengths, and limits of social capital in managing conflicts over the use and management of natural resources. We inventoried over 700 cases ranging from conflicts between multiple resource users to supra-community conflicts between local communities concerns for better livelihoods and national/international …

The Unsettling Landscape: Landscape And Anxiety In The Garden Of The House Of Octavius Quartio, Sarah Brutesco Jan 2007

The Unsettling Landscape: Landscape And Anxiety In The Garden Of The House Of Octavius Quartio, Sarah Brutesco

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Ancient Roman houses (domus) were both public and private spaces and were used by the homeowner (dominus) to send messages of power to his guests and family members. Scholarly analysis of the rhetorical power of the architecture and decoration of the domus has largely overlooked the role of the garden within this context. It is generally assumed that the purpose of the garden was to provide a calm green space in the center of an urban home. The purpose of this paper is to challenge this overly simplistic reading of Roman gardens and to explore how the dominus might have …

New Insight Into The Role Of The Β3 Subunit Of The Gabaa-R In Development, Behavior, Body Weight Regulation, And Anesthesia Revealed By Conditional Gene Knockout, Carolyn Ferguson, Steven L. Hardy, David F. Werner, Stanley M. Hileman, Timothy M. Delorey, Gregg E. Homanics

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

The β3 subunit of the γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABAA-R) has been reported to be important for palate formation, anesthetic action, and normal nervous system function. This subunit has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of Angelman syndrome and autism spectrum disorder. To further investigate involvement of this subunit, we previously produced mice with a global knockout of β3. However, developmental abnormalities, compensation, reduced viability, and numerous behavioral abnormalities limited the usefulness of that murine model. To overcome many of these limitations, a mouse line with a conditionally inactivated β3 gene was engineered.

The Effects Of Relatedness And Order Of Anagrams On The Ability To Recall, Dana Castrellon, Mai Ozaki, Sarah Staley Jan 2007

The Effects Of Relatedness And Order Of Anagrams On The Ability To Recall, Dana Castrellon, Mai Ozaki, Sarah Staley

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This paper discusses the effects of the relatedness and order in which words are presented on a person’s ability to solve anagrams. One of the hypotheses was that it would be easier to recall anagrams if they were related and presented in the same order as the study sheet. The other was that a person would more easily recall words if they are related rather than unrelated. Forty-eight participants were recruited and asked to complete two of four anagrams tests. The results of a one-way MANOVA examining the effect of consistency of item order did not reveal statistically significant results. …

The House That Jack Built With Effective Transitions, K.K. Duvivier Jan 2007

The House That Jack Built With Effective Transitions, K.K. Duvivier

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Constructing a paragraph is somewhat like constructing a house. Our sentences are like the boards that form the frame of our ideas. However, those boards may end up looking more like a pile of lumber than an actual building if we do not connect them in a logical way.

Transient Tracer Dynamics In A Lattice-Automaton Model Of Bioturbation, Daniel C. Reed, Bernard P. Boudreau, Katherine Huang Jan 2007

Transient Tracer Dynamics In A Lattice-Automaton Model Of Bioturbation, Daniel C. Reed, Bernard P. Boudreau, Katherine Huang

Journal of Marine Research

Mixing of sediments by benthic fauna represents a dominant transport process of solids in the majority of surficial marine deposits. Short-term mixing rates are often determined by fitting a transient, diffusive model of bioturbation to vertical profiles of introduced particles (e.g., luminophores). Previous field studies adopting this approach have noted that mixing intensity decreases with time and the nature of mixing progresses from advective or nonlocal transport to diffusive mixing. These observations have been attributed to "age-dependent" mixing. The present study employs a lattice-automaton model to investigate the short-term behavior of conservative transient tracers. Simulations demonstrate that despite constant, indiscriminate …

Effects Of The New Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Pxd101 In Bladder Cancer, Hristos Zacharias Kaimakliotis Jan 2007

Effects Of The New Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor Pxd101 In Bladder Cancer, Hristos Zacharias Kaimakliotis

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) mediate gene expression and chromatin assembly, and induce growth arrest and apoptosis of tumor cells, thus representing a new strategy for human cancer therapy. Changes in apoptosis signaling pathways and the effect on cell growth and cell-cycle arrest of a new HDACI, PXD101, on T-24 bladder cancer cells form the basis of this study. T-24 cells were incubated with PXD101 at varying concentrations and times, and viable cell count and proliferation curves were constructed. Cell cycle analysis was conducted with Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorting and changes in apoptosis signaling proteins that were previously found to be …

The Negotiator As Professional: Understanding The Competing Interests Of A Representative Negotiator, Trevor C. W. Farrow Jan 2007

The Negotiator As Professional: Understanding The Competing Interests Of A Representative Negotiator, Trevor C. W. Farrow

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This article is about lawyers as negotiators, and in particular, it is about identifying and understanding the influential and potentially competing interests that are - or at least should be - in the minds of lawyers (and potentially other third party representatives) during the overall negotiation process. While there continues to be an increasing amount of literature on the mechanics and strategies of negotiation, the underlying interests that are typically at stake in representative negotiations from the perspective of representatives - particularly negotiations involving lawyers - have not been adequately studied. Current accounts of the representative negotiator do not paint …

What's Democracy Got To Do With It?: A Critique Of Liberal Constitutionalism, Allan Hutchinson, Joel I. Colón-Ríos Jan 2007

What's Democracy Got To Do With It?: A Critique Of Liberal Constitutionalism, Allan Hutchinson, Joel I. Colón-Ríos

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper examines the extent to which Ronald Dworkin's liberal constitutionalism, as presented in his recent work "Is Democracy Possible Here? Principles for a New Political Debate," can provide the basis and impetus for the realization of democracy in contemporary societies. The paper is divided into three main sections. We begin by locating the broader institutional contexts within which debates about the importance and salience of democratic politics have taken place and introducing Dworkin's distinctive and defiant contribution to those debates. In the second and main section, we offer a substantial critique of Dworkin's proposals and demonstrate how his (and …

The Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a rare, non-colonial seabird often associated with tidewater glaciers and a recent candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. We estimated abundance of Kittlitz's Murrelets across space and time from at-sea surveys along the coast of Alaska (USA) and then used these data to develop spatial models to describe abundance patterns and identify environmental factors affecting abundance. Over a five-week period in the summer of 2005, we recorded 794 Kittlitz's Murrelets, 16 Marbled Murrelets (B. marmoratus), and 70 unidentified murrelets. The overall population estimate (N, mean ± …

What Is Patentable Subject Matter? The Supreme Court Dismisses Labcorp V. Metabolite Laboratories, But The Issue Is Not Going Away, Sue Ann Mota Jan 2007

What Is Patentable Subject Matter? The Supreme Court Dismisses Labcorp V. Metabolite Laboratories, But The Issue Is Not Going Away, Sue Ann Mota

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Patent law seeks to strike a balance regarding patentable subject matter between overprotection, which can impede the free exchange of ideas, and under-protection, which can lessen the incentive to invent. This article summarizes the Supreme Court's recent decision to dismiss Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings v. Metabolite Laboratories, Inc., passing on the opportunity to consider the issue of what constitutes patentable subject matter under the Patent Act, and the author outlines recommendations for when the issue is raise by future litigants.

The Proper Scope Of Patentability In International Law, Shawn J. Kolitch Jan 2007

The Proper Scope Of Patentability In International Law, Shawn J. Kolitch

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Patent law encourages innovation, but the harm caused by some inventions may outweigh the benefits of disclosure. This article examines the environmental and public health consequences of patent laws around the world and argues that the patent incentive should be selectively removed to mitigate the harmful effects of granting patents without regard to the invention-specific impacts of doing so.

A Study Of Prehistoric Art And Other Pleasures, Sue Loy

Sabbaticals

...The major focus of my sabbatical study was Paleolithic Art, although I also studied the megalithic monuments of the Neolithic era, ancient and contemporary architecture, medieval French and Spanish literature, and Middle Eastern history and culture. With extensive travel to France, Spain, and Italy, I was able to view paintings in caves that are open to the public and I was able to improve my ability to use French and Spanish in everyday conversation.

My sabbatical study of rock art was a continuation of research undertaken earlier when I was a member of several small groups that located, photographed, and …

Moral Status, Moral Value, And Human Embryos: Implications For Stem Cell Research, Bonnie Steinbock Jan 2007

Moral Status, Moral Value, And Human Embryos: Implications For Stem Cell Research, Bonnie Steinbock

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Human embryonic stem cells (ES cells) are of scientific and medical interest because of their ability to develop into different tissue types and because of their ability to be propagated for many generations in laboratory culture. Grown in a laboratory, they might one day be used in the treatment of degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. They could provide bone cells for the treatment of osteoporosis, eye cells for macular degeneration, blood cells for cancer, insulinproducing cells for diabetes, heart muscle cells for heart disease, nerve cells for spinal cord injury. The potential for benefit to so many people …

Guareschi's "Mondo Piccolo" And The Sacrality Of Conscience, Alan R. Perry Jan 2007

Guareschi's "Mondo Piccolo" And The Sacrality Of Conscience, Alan R. Perry

Italian Faculty Publications

This study adopts a Christian hermeneutic to explore sacred themes in several of the 346 Don Camillo short stories that Giovannino Guareschi wrote between 1946 and 1966. Such a critical approach may seem non-traditional to use in analyzing a post-World War II, twentieth-century author. And yet, Guareschi defies convention in many ways beyond his profession as a journalist, humorist and popular author: he openly opposed the anti-clerical and Marxist literary establishment; defined himself as an anti-intellectual; and, as a layperson, he wrote unromantically about matters of faith. Especially as editor of the immensely popular weekly newspaper Candido, he had …

Defining Space Use And Movements Of Canada Lynx With Global Positioning System Telemetry, Christopher Burdett, Ron Moen, Gerald J. Niemi, L. David Mech Jan 2007

Defining Space Use And Movements Of Canada Lynx With Global Positioning System Telemetry, Christopher Burdett, Ron Moen, Gerald J. Niemi, L. David Mech

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Space use and movements of Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) are difficult to study with very-high-frequency radiocollars. We deployed global positioning system (GPS) collars on 11 lynx in Minnesota to study their seasonal space-use patterns. We estimated home ranges with minimum-convex-polygon and fixed-kernel methods and estimated core areas with area/probability curves. Fixed-kernel home ranges of males (range = 29–522 km2) were significantly larger than those of females (range = 5–95 km2) annually and during the denning season. Some male lynx increased movements during March, the month most influenced by breeding activity. Lynx core areas were …
