Genetic Selection, Sex And Feeding Treatment Affect The Whole-Body Chemical Composition Of Sheep, G. C. Emmans, R. M. Lewis Jan 2007

Genetic Selection, Sex And Feeding Treatment Affect The Whole-Body Chemical Composition Of Sheep, G. C. Emmans, R. M. Lewis

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Hypotheses on total body chemical composition were tested using data from 350 Suffolk sheep grown to a wide range of live weights, and fed in a non-limiting way, or with reduced amounts of feed, or ad libitum on feeds of reduced protein content. The sheep were from an experiment where selection used an index designed to increase the lean deposition rate while restricting the fat deposition rate. Ultrasound muscle and fat depths were the only composition measurements in the index. The animals were males and females from a selection (S) line and its unselected control (C). The protein content of …

Economías De Redención: "La Agricultura De La Zona Tórrida" (1826) De Andrés Bello, Alvaro Kaempfer Jan 2007

Economías De Redención: "La Agricultura De La Zona Tórrida" (1826) De Andrés Bello, Alvaro Kaempfer

Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies Faculty Publications

Genetic Population Structure And Breeding Parameters Of Three Pennsylvania State Threatened Darter Species: Etheostoma Camurum, E. Maculatum And E. Tippecanoe, Laura Howell Jan 2007

Genetic Population Structure And Breeding Parameters Of Three Pennsylvania State Threatened Darter Species: Etheostoma Camurum, E. Maculatum And E. Tippecanoe, Laura Howell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about the breeding parameters and population structure of three Pennsylvania darters, the bluebreast darter, Etheostoma camurum, the spotted darter, E. maculatum, and the Tippecanoe darter, E. tippecanoe. All are Pennsylvania state threatened species, and they are considered threatened or endangered in several other states throughout their range. Although some limited breeding information is available from populations in other states, the timing and duration of spawning has not been documented for Pennsylvania populations of E. camurum and E. tippecanoe. Both species occupy disjunct riffle habitats in the Allegheny River system, with stable populations in French Creek. We have …

Application Of A Karst Environmental Disturbance Index In Hillsborough County., Philip Van Beynen, Nilda Feliciano, Leslie North, Kaya Van Beynen Jan 2007

Application Of A Karst Environmental Disturbance Index In Hillsborough County., Philip Van Beynen, Nilda Feliciano, Leslie North, Kaya Van Beynen

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Hillsborough County, Florida, is a karst region that is heavily urbanized, yet no study has been undertaken measuring the degree of human disturbance. Van Beynen and Townsend (2005) created a hierarchical and standardized disturbance index specifically designed for karst environments. To address the problem of determining human disturbance in the county, the above index was successfully applied and it was found that Hillsborough was highly disturbed (disturbance score of 0.69 of 1.0) because of its predominant urban and rural land use. Furthermore, the application of the index allowed for its refinement and the highlighting of environmental aspects in need of …

Millennial Pre-Camp Staff Training: Incorporating Generational Knowledge, Learning Strategies And Compliance Gaining Techniques, Dana Robin Magilen

Theses Digitization Project

A new generation, Millennial Generation, is currently staffing summer camp programs. Camp directors need to be aware of the differences in learning styles this generation prefers. The Millennial generation is the first to grow up with the instant accessibility of the Internet. This project was created based on suggestions from Camp Directors and ideas that have been developed from the study of this generation. A pre-camp video game training script has been created and tailored to the Millennial camp staff in order to encourage Millennials to learn and use the information needed to take proper care of campers.

The Role Of Behavioral Dynamics In Determining The Patch Distributions Of Interacting Species, Peter A. Abrams, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan Jan 2007

The Role Of Behavioral Dynamics In Determining The Patch Distributions Of Interacting Species, Peter A. Abrams, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The effect of the behavioral dynamics of movement on the population dynamics of interacting species in multipatch systems is studied. The behavioral dynamics of habitat choice used in a range of previous models are reviewed. There is very limited empirical evidence for distinguishing between these different models, but they differ in important ways, and many lack properties that would guarantee stability of an ideal free distribution in a single-species system. The importance of finding out more about movement dynamics in multispecies systems is shown by an analysis of the effect of movement rules on the dynamics of a particular two-species–two-patch …

Memory And Exile In María Teresa León’S Las Peregrinaciones De Teresa (1950), Debra J. Ochoa

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

María Teresa León (1903-1988) is most well known for her autobiography Memoria de la melancolía (1977), written during her last years of exile from her native Spain. The year 2003 marked the centenary of her birth and a reevaluation of her fiction, including a new edition of her short stories edited by Gregorio Torres Nebrera. [1] In the twenty-first century León finally receives much overdue recognition. [2] This article will examine León‘s conception of memory and exile, through a close textual reading of her short stories ―Primera peregrinación de Teresa," ―El noviciado de Teresa," ―Cabeza de ajo," and ―Esplendor de …

Geography And Ideology Of Accounting: A Case Study Of Domination And Accounting In A Sugar Refinery In Australasia, 1900-1920, Jill J. Hooks, Ross E. Stewart Jan 2007

Geography And Ideology Of Accounting: A Case Study Of Domination And Accounting In A Sugar Refinery In Australasia, 1900-1920, Jill J. Hooks, Ross E. Stewart

Accounting Historians Journal

This historical case study examines accounting in a sugar refinery from 1900 to 1920 in two arenas of operation. The geography of accounting enabled the workers at Chelsea to have their working experience sequestered by the company. Accounting routinized their work at the refinery, enabling their labor to become monitored, empty of meaning, and, at times, overwhelming. The ideology of accounting provided the company with an instrument of evasion to silence the voice of labor and an instrument of self-deception designed to justify and insulate the authoritarian hierarchy of the company and the power of its Australian general manager, Edward …

King John's Tax Innovation -- Extortion, Resistance, And The Establishment Of The Principle Of Taxation By Consent, Jane Frecknall Hughes, Lynne Oats

Accounting Historians Journal

The purpose of this paper is to present a re-evaluation of the reign of England's King John (1199-1216) from a fiscal perspective. The paper seeks to explain John's innovations in terms of widening the scope and severity of tax assessment and revenue collection. In particular, the paper seeks to highlight the significance of Hubert Walter as the king's financial adviser. He exercised a moderating influence in the first half of John's reign and was the guiding hand in the successful introduction of innovative measures designed to increase revenues. These became extreme after his death in 1205, when John lacked his …

Give Them What They Want? The Permissibility Of Pediatric Placebo-Controlled Trials Under The Best Pharmaceuticals For Children Act, Holly Fernandez Lynch

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article discusses the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act and the FDA's request for placebo-controlled studies of drugs to treat OCD and depression in children. First, the article explains the need to test drugs in children and examines the reasons this testing has not occurred. Next, the article describes the legislative and administrative responses to remedy this lack of research and assesses the ethics and legality of their implementation. The article concludes that these initiatives are legally and ethically acceptable until a safe and effective treatment is determined--at which point the use of placebos in pediatric testing must be replaced …

"This Flesh Will Rise Again": Retrieving Early Christian Faith In Bodily Resurrection, J. Douglass Jan 2007

"This Flesh Will Rise Again": Retrieving Early Christian Faith In Bodily Resurrection, J. Douglass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The doctrine of bodily resurrection is fundamental to the Christian faith. Its significance is grounded in the fact that the Christian faith arises from and is dependent upon the belief that Jesus returned to life after having been dead and buried. As a result of this belief and the teaching of Christ's first followers, the early Church articulated a hope for a similar resurrection. In spite of the centrality of the doctrine of bodily resurrection for the early Church, the doctrine's present relevance is questionable. This dissertation provides an answer to the question, What does it mean to affirm faith …
