Literacy Education In School : Research Perspectives From The Past, For The Future, Peter Freebody

Australian Education Review

AER 52 aims to expand our understanding of the nature of literacy at a time when public and private lives have become increasingly literacy-dependent, and literacy demands more complex and sophisticated. This review of the research literature is guided by the view that what passes for effective literacy education will differ depending on language, culture, history and the technologies of communication and knowledge production. Section 1 describes the large body of research relating to the teaching and learning of literacy that emerges from a wide range of discipline bases. It details the complexities associated with defining literacy, and it outlines …

Four Greco-Roman Era Temples Of Near Eastern Fertility Goddesses: An Analysis Of Architectural Tradition, K. Michelle Wimber Nov 2007

Four Greco-Roman Era Temples Of Near Eastern Fertility Goddesses: An Analysis Of Architectural Tradition, K. Michelle Wimber

Theses and Dissertations

Lucian, writing in the mid-second century AD, recorded his observations of an "exotic" local cult in the city of Hierapolis in what is today Northern Syria. The local goddess was known as Dea Syria to the Romans and Atargatis to the Greeks. Lucian's so-named De Dea Syria is an important record of life and religion in Roman Syria. De Dea Syria presents to us an Oriental cult of a fertility goddess as seen through the eyes of a Hellenized Syrian devotee and religious ethnographer. How accurate Lucian's portrayal of the cult is questionable, though his account provides for us some …

Improving Protein Crystal Quality By Selective Removal Of A Ca 2+-Dependent Membrane-Insertion Loop, David B. Neau, Nathaniel C. Gilbert, Sue G. Bartlett, Adam Dassey, Marcia E. Newcomer

Faculty Publications

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) catalyze the regiospecific and stereospecific dioxygenation of polyunsaturated membrane-embedded fatty acids. A Ca 2+-dependent membrane-binding function was localized to the amino-terminal C2-like domain of 8R-lipoxygenase (8R-LOX) from the soft coral Plexaura homomalla. The 3.2 Å crystal structure of 8R-LOX and spectroscopic data suggested that Ca2+ stabilizes two membrane-insertion loops. Analysis of the protein packing contacts in the crystal lattice indicated that the conformation of one of the two loops complicated efforts to improve the resolution of the X-ray data. A deletion mutant of 8R-LOX in which the corresponding membrane-insertion loop is absent (Δ41-45:GSLOX) was engineered. Removal of the …

Attenuation Of Ruminal Methanogenesis, Eric J. Behlke Nov 2007

Attenuation Of Ruminal Methanogenesis, Eric J. Behlke

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ruminal methanogens reduce carbon dioxide to methane (CH4), thereby preventing hydrogen use by bacteria for VFA synthesis resulting in a 2 to 12% loss in feed gross energy. Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. The objectives of this work were to determine: 1) the extent to which ruminal cultures acquire resistance to a nitrofuranyl derivative of para-aminobenzoate (NFP) and an extract from the plant Yucca shidigera (Yucca); 2) the effect of distillers dried grains plus solubles (DDGS) on ruminal CH4 production; 3) the effect of brome hay-based diets, corn-based diets, and in vivo …

Seleksi Dan Pengujian Aktivitas Enzim L-Histidine Decarboxylase Dari Bakteri Pembentuk Histamin, Wibowo Mangunwardoyo, Romauli Aya Sophia, Endang Sri Heruwati

Makara Journal of Science

Selection and test of L-histidine decarboxylase enzyme activity of six isolates of histamine forming bacteria. Six isolates of histamine forming bacteria were screened to see the degree of ability in producing histamine on modified Niven’s medium. The result showed that the six bacteria were able to produce histamine by giving a pinkish color on the medium, which could be used as a preliminary identification of histamine-forming bacteria (HFB). The isolates were grown in liquid modified Niven medium to measure the production of histamine. The histamine produced were determined by Hardy and Smith method. The result showed that all of the …

Persistent Near-Bottom Aggregations Of Mesopelagic Animals Along The North Carolina And Virginia Continental Slopes, John V. Gartner Jr., Kenneth J. Sulak, Steve W. Ross, Ann Marie Necaise Nov 2007

Persistent Near-Bottom Aggregations Of Mesopelagic Animals Along The North Carolina And Virginia Continental Slopes, John V. Gartner Jr., Kenneth J. Sulak, Steve W. Ross, Ann Marie Necaise

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Submersible observations during four missions over the North Carolina and Virginia continental slopes (184–900 m) documented the occurrence of large aggregations of mesopelagic Wshes and macronektonic invertebrates near or on the bottom. Aggregated mesopelagics formed a layer up to tens of meters deep positioned from a few centimeters to 20 m, usually <10 >m, above the substrate. Aggregations were numerically dominated by microvores, notably the myctophid Wsh Ceratoscopelus maderensis and the penaeid shrimp Sergestes arcticus. Consistently present but in relatively lower numbers, were mesopelagic predators, including the paralepidids Notolepis rissoi and Lestidium atlanticum, the eel Nemichthys scolopaceus, the …

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] The Social Implications Of Enjoyment Of Different Types Of Music, Movies, And Television Programming, Alice Hall Nov 2007

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] The Social Implications Of Enjoyment Of Different Types Of Music, Movies, And Television Programming, Alice Hall

Communication and Media Faculty Works

This study investigated how information about an individual’s enjoyment of various genres of music, film, and TV programming could influence an observer’s expectations of that individual. An online survey of young adults found that the influence of information about another person’s genre preferences varied across genres. Enjoyment of some genres, including jazz music, film comedies, and television comedies, tended to raise expectations of the individual, whereas enjoyment of others, including heavy metal music, anime films, and television soap operas, tended to lower them. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to uses and gratifications perspectives as well as …

A Bayesian Model For Cross-Study Differential Gene Expression, Robert B. Scharpf, Hakon Tjelemeland, Giovanni Parmigiani, Andrew B. Nobel Nov 2007

A Bayesian Model For Cross-Study Differential Gene Expression, Robert B. Scharpf, Hakon Tjelemeland, Giovanni Parmigiani, Andrew B. Nobel

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

In this paper we define a hierarchical Bayesian model for microarray expression data collected from several studies and use it to identify genes that show differential expression between two conditions. Key features include shrinkage across both genes and studies; flexible modeling that allows for interactions between platforms and the estimated effect, and for both concordant and discordant differential expression across studies. We evaluated the performance of our model in a comprehensive fashion, using both artificial data, and a "split-sample" validation approach that provides an agnostic assessment of the model's behavior not only under the null hypothesis but also under a …

Prohibition On Required Or Coerced Sterilization Of Animals Or Humans. Constitutional Amendment. Nov 2007

Prohibition On Required Or Coerced Sterilization Of Animals Or Humans. Constitutional Amendment.

Initiatives

Prohibits enactment or enforcement of any law requiring or coercing by any means, including financial penalty, sexual sterilization of any human or animal. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Short-term savings to local governments because of the elimination of spay and neuter enforcement and surgery costs, offset in the long-term by unknown, but potentially significant, increased costs to operate shelters and provide animal control services to an increased dog and cat population. Unknown, but potentially significant loss of local government animal control revenue, because jurisdictions will no longer …
