The Anchor, Volume 120.12: January 17, 2007, Hope College
The Anchor: 2007
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Using A Commercially Available Enzyme Immunoassay To Quantify Testosterone In Avian Plasma, Brian E. Washburn, Joshua J. Millspaugh, Dana L. Morris, John H. Schulz, John Faaborg
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Using a commercially available testosterone enzyme immunoassay (EIA), we developed and validated an assay procedure for determining testosterone levels in small-volume (20 μL) avian plasma samples. We evaluated this EIA’s utility by measuring plasma testosterone levels in Mourning Doves (Zenaida macroura), White-eyed Vireos (Vireo griseus), Red-eyed Vireos (Vireo olivaceus), and Indigo Buntings (Passerina cyanea). Standard biochemical validations (e.g., parallelism, recovery of exogenous testosterone) demonstrated that the assay accurately and precisely measured testosterone in avian plasma. We compared plasma testosterone levels in males and females of all four species and Indigo Buntings in …

Put That In Your Thurible And Smoke It: Religious Gerrymandering Of Sacramental Intoxication, Mark A. Levine
Put That In Your Thurible And Smoke It: Religious Gerrymandering Of Sacramental Intoxication, Mark A. Levine
ExpressO
In February 2006, the Supreme Court ruled on the case Gonzales v. O Centro Beneficente Uniao do Vegetal, granting an injunction permitting the use of ayahuasca, a plant containing the Schedule I substance Dimethyltryptamine, for sacramental intoxication purposes. The unanimous Court justified this injunction by comparing the Uniao do Vegetal's use of the illegal substance with the Native American Church's use of peyote, which contains another Schedule I substance, mescaline. This ruling is incomptabile with lower court rulings rejecting the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church use of marijuana, consistently stating that the Native American Church has rights beyond those of other …

The Economic Impact Of The South-North Water Transfer Project In China: A Computable General Equilibrium Analysis, Maria Berrittella, Katrin Rehdanz, Richard S.J. Tol
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Water resources are unevenly spread in China. Especially the basins of the Yellow, Hui and Hai rivers in the North are rather dry. To increase the supply of water in these basins, the South-to-North Water Transfer project (SNWT) was launched. Using a computable general equilibrium model this study estimates the impact of the project on the economy of China and the rest of the world. We contrast three alternative groups of scenarios. All are directly concerned with the South-to-North water transfer project to increase water supply. In the first group of scenarios additional supply implies productivity gains. We call it …
Sustainable Development Policies In Europe, Pietro Caratti, Gabriella Lo Cascio
Sustainable Development Policies In Europe, Pietro Caratti, Gabriella Lo Cascio
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The objective of this paper is to investigate the actual situation in the shift towards the implementation of Sustainable Development Policies in Europe. The aim is to highlight the key role of the European Union in bringing about sustainable development within Europe and also on the wider global stage. It will show how the European Commission performs its commitment in reaching a sustainable regulation by issuing some documents and declarations. The paper frames the EU action into an international framework of strategies, agreements and policies on SD and, at the same time, provides an overview on experiences of SD strategy …

Opiate Analogs Selective For The Δ-Opioid Receptor, William J. Welsh, Seong Jae Yu, Anil Nair
Opiate Analogs Selective For The Δ-Opioid Receptor, William J. Welsh, Seong Jae Yu, Anil Nair
UMSL Patents
Novel compounds which selectively bind to the δ-opioid receptor have been designed. These compounds have greater selectivity, improved water (blood) solubility, and enhanced therapeutic value as analgesics. Because agonists with selectivity for the δ-opioid receptor have shown promise in providing enhanced analgesis without the addictive properties, the compounds of the present invention are better than morphine, naltrindole (NTI), spiroindanyloxymorphone (SIOM), and other known μ-opioid receptor selectors as analgesics.
For the most up-to-date information about these patents, including the availability of Certificates of Correction, be sure to check the United States Patent and Trademark Office's free, publicly accessible database: Patent Public …

Conservation Of B Class Gene Expression In The Second Whorl Of A Basal Grass And Outgroups Links The Origin Of Lodicules And Petals, Clinton Whipple, Michael Zanis, Elizabeth Kellogg, Robert Schmidt
Biology Department Faculty Works
Studies of flower development in core eudicot species have established a central role for B class MADS-box genes in specifying petal and stamen identities. Similarly in maize and rice, B class genes are essential for lodicule and stamen specification, suggesting homology of petals and lodicules and conservation of B class gene activity across angiosperms. However, lodicules are grass-specific organs with a morphology distinct from petals, thus their true homology to eudicot and nongrass monocot floral organs has been a topic of debate. To understand the relationship of lodicules to the sterile floral organs of nongrass monocots we have isolated and …

Why Worry About Climate Change? A Research Agenda, Richard S.J. Tol
Why Worry About Climate Change? A Research Agenda, Richard S.J. Tol
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Estimates of the marginal damage costs of carbon dioxide emissions suggest that, although climate change is a problem and some emission reduction is justified, very stringent abatement does not pass the cost-benefit test. However, current estimates of the economic impact of climate change are incomplete. Some of the missing impacts are likely to be positive and others negative, but overall the uncertainty seems to concentrate on the downside risks and current estimates of the damage costs may have a negative bias. The research effort on the economic impacts of climate change is minute, and should be strengthened, with a particular …
Passing On The Faith: Transforming Traditions For The Next Generation Of Jews, Christians, And Muslims, James L. Heft S.M.
Passing On The Faith: Transforming Traditions For The Next Generation Of Jews, Christians, And Muslims, James L. Heft S.M.
Religion
From the beginning, the Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—have stressed the importance of transmitting religious identity from one generation to the next. Today, that sustaining mission has never been more challenged. Will young people have a faith to guide them? How can faith traditions anchor religious attachments in this secular, skeptical culture? The fruit of a historic gathering of scholars and religious leaders across three faiths and many disciplines, this important book reports on the religious lives of young people in today’s world. It’s also a unique inventory of creative and thoughtful responses from churches, synagogues, and mosques working to …

Economy-Wide Estimates Of The Implications Of Climate Change: A Joint Analysis For Sea Level Rise And Tourism, Francesco Bosello , Andrea Bigano, Roberto Roson, Richard S.J. Tol
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Climate change impacts on human life have well defined and different origins, nevertheless in the determination of their final effects, especially those involving social-economic responses, interactions among impacts are likely to play an important role. This paper is one of the first attempts to disentangle and highlight the role of these interactions. It focuses on the economic assessment of two specific climate change impacts: sea-level rise and changes in tourism flows. By using a CGE model the two impacts categories are first analyzed separately and then jointly. Comparing the results it is shown that, even though qualitatively joint effects follow …

Sustainable Development Data Availability On Internet, Pietro Caratti, Ludovico Ferraguto , Chiara Riboldi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Defining what Sustainability and Sustainable Development mean is a critical task, as they are global objectives, which cover different aspects of life often difficult to quantify and describe. Talking about sustainable development means dealing with the development and implementation of SD strategies at international as well as at local level. With this regard, SD information plays a key role in monitoring SD performances at different administration levels. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of sustainable data availability on the internet at international, European, national and regional level. The paper is novel in the fact that the …
