The Myc Transactivation Domain Promotes Global Phosphorylation Of The Rna Polymerase Ii Carboxy-Terminal Domain Independently Of Direct Dna Binding, Victoria H. Cowling, Michael D. Cole Jan 2007

The Myc Transactivation Domain Promotes Global Phosphorylation Of The Rna Polymerase Ii Carboxy-Terminal Domain Independently Of Direct Dna Binding, Victoria H. Cowling, Michael D. Cole

Dartmouth Scholarship

Myc is a transcription factor which is dependent on its DNA binding domain for transcriptional regulation of target genes. Here, we report the surprising finding that Myc mutants devoid of direct DNA binding activity and Myc target gene regulation can rescue a substantial fraction of the growth defect in myc−/− fibroblasts. Expression of the Myc transactivation domain alone induces a transcription-independent elevation of the RNA polymerase II (Pol II) C-terminal domain (CTD) kinases cyclin-dependent kinase 7 (CDK7) and CDK9 and a global increase in CTD phosphorylation. The Myc transactivation domain binds to the transcription initiation sites of these promoters …

Determining Winter Flounder Spawning Sites In Two Connecticut Estuaries, Eric T. Schultz, Jose J. Pereira, Peter J. Auster Jan 2007

Determining Winter Flounder Spawning Sites In Two Connecticut Estuaries, Eric T. Schultz, Jose J. Pereira, Peter J. Auster

EEB Articles

Winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) come inshore during the late winter and early spring to lay their eggs in shallow bays and estuaries along the coast. Unlike most fish eggs, which are buoyant, these eggs are demersal and sink to the seafloor. This makes them vulnerable to burial from various types of natural and human caused disturbances (e.g., storms, mobile fishing gear, maintenance dredging). Our objective was to map spawning areas in two harbors and search for generalities among these sites that would allow us to predict where winter flounder might spawn in other areas. This would allow managers to avoid …

Naltrexone Renders One-Session Exposure Therapy Less Effective: A Controlled Pilot Study, Andrea T. Kozac, C. Richard Spates, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Katherine C. Bailey, Kristin L. Schneider, Michael R. Liepman

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In vivo exposure has become the gold standard treatment for specific phobia. The endogenous opioid system is one mechanism proposed to explain why exposure provides such quick and effective treatment for specific phobia. The effect of naltrexone on fear and avoidance behavior was investigated among 15 specific phobia participants who received exposure treatment. Participants were randomly assigned to receive naltrexone, placebo, or no drug prior to attending one-session exposure treatment. Mixed effects regression results revealed that across time, the naltrexone group tolerated significantly less time in the room with the feared animal (Behavioral Avoidance Index) as compared to the placebo …

An Examination Of Faculty Experiences With Hybrid Formats, Jo Elsa Meyertons Jan 2007

An Examination Of Faculty Experiences With Hybrid Formats, Jo Elsa Meyertons

Dissertations and Theses

This phenomenological study investigated the experiences of a set of faculty who taught classes in hybrid format at a small liberal arts university in Salem, Oregon. For this study, a "hybrid format" course was defined as a course that includes elements of both traditional face-to-face and technology-enhanced (often Internet) course components. The study consisted of a set of heuristic interviews with faculty members identified through an empirical survey I conducted in Fall 2002 as part of my duties as Director of Instructional Design and Development for the university's technical services department.

Higher education leaders have consistently identified technology integration as …

The Sustainable Restoration And Development Of Parque Landeta And The Presa De Las Colonias Wetland Through Effective Community Participation, San Miguel De Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, Tara Putney

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Community participation in watershed management has been globally recognized as being one of the key elements in sustainable development. The appropriateness of adopted technologies, information transfers, socioeconomic and cultural sustainability, and monitoring and maintenance of water projects are all interconnected with the level of community participation. This professional project presents an analysis and recommendations for the sustainable development of a local park and its associated wetland resources through effective, relative and meaningful community involvement. Parque Landeta is found just outside the urban zone of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, which is located in the semi-arid Central Highlands of Mexico. Qualitative …

Interleukin-10 Inhibits Osteoclastogenesis By Reducing Nfatc1 Expression And Preventing Its Translocation To The Nucleus., Ke Evans, Sw Fox Jan 2007

Interleukin-10 Inhibits Osteoclastogenesis By Reducing Nfatc1 Expression And Preventing Its Translocation To The Nucleus., Ke Evans, Sw Fox

School of Biomedical Sciences

BACKGROUND: IL-10 has a potent inhibitory effect on osteoclastogenesis. In vitro and in vivo studies confirm the importance of this cytokine in bone metabolism, for instance IL-10-deficient mice develop the hallmarks of osteoporosis. Although it is known that IL-10 directly inhibits osteoclastogenesis at an early stage, preventing differentiation of osteoclast progenitors to preosteoclasts, the precise mechanism of its action is not yet clear. Several major pathways regulate osteoclastogenesis, with key signalling genes such as p38, TRAF6, NF-kappaB and NFATc1 well established as playing vital roles. We have looked at gene expression in eleven of these genes using real-time quantitative PCR …

Youtube Or Youlose? Can Youtube Survive A Copyright Infringement Lawsuit, Jason C. Breen Jan 2007

Youtube Or Youlose? Can Youtube Survive A Copyright Infringement Lawsuit, Jason C. Breen

ExpressO

YouTube, and similar video web hosting services, have already been targets of copyright infringement lawsuits. YouTube’s liability is most likely dependant on whether the service meets the requirements of the DMCA safe harbor for service providers under 17 U.S.C.A. § 512(c). This paper briefly examines how YouTube would fare under the different theories of copyright infringement and discusses whether the DMCA safe harbor would be available to YouTube if they were found liable as an infringer. The limited case law available indicates that the DMCA safe harbor will likely facilitate YouTube’s continued existence, unlike services like Grokster, although YouTube would …

Model-Based Compartmental Analysis Indicates A Reduced Mobilization Of Hepatic Vitamin A During Inflammation In Rats, Sin Gieng, Michael Green, Joanne Green, Francisco Rosales Jan 2007

Model-Based Compartmental Analysis Indicates A Reduced Mobilization Of Hepatic Vitamin A During Inflammation In Rats, Sin Gieng, Michael Green, Joanne Green, Francisco Rosales

Faculty Publications

Vitamin A (VA) kinetics was studied in rats with marginal VA stores before, during, and after inflammation. Rats received orally [11,12-3H(N)]retinol ([3H]VA; day 0), and inflammation was induced on day 21 with lipopolysacchride (LPS) for 3 days (n = 5) or recombinant human interleukin-6 (rhIL-6) for 7 days (n = 5). Both the fraction of [3H]VA and retinol concentrations in plasma were reduced significantly by LPS or rhIL-6. Compartmental analysis using the Windows version of Simulation, Analysis, and Modeling software was applied to group mean data, and non-steady-state models were developed. After absorption, VA kinetics was described by a three-compartment …

Resolving Conflicts Between Multilateral Environmental Agreements: The Case Of The Montreal And Kyoto Protocols, Daniel G. Mccabe Jan 2007

Resolving Conflicts Between Multilateral Environmental Agreements: The Case Of The Montreal And Kyoto Protocols, Daniel G. Mccabe

ExpressO

The Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer are multilateral environmental agreements that regulate the use of chemicals that contribute to climate change and ozone depletion. The Montreal Protocol, however, encourages the replacement of ozone depleting substances with chemicals that contribute to climate change. Likewise, the Kyoto Protocol encourages the production of an ozone depleting substance by allowing companies to profit by destroying the byproduct of its manufacture. This comment attempts to resolve these conflicts through conventional and customary international law. It concludes that the …
