Character Education In Literature-Based Instruction, Karen L. Parker, Beth E. Ackerman Feb 2007

Character Education In Literature-Based Instruction, Karen L. Parker, Beth E. Ackerman

Faculty Publications and Presentations

As schools mandate character education, teachers face the dilemma of crowding another requirement into their teaching schedules while continuing to meet increased accountability for academic performance. Therefore, teachers are seeking the most effective approach to teaching character education and one that conserves time in their classrooms. Teaching character principles that apply to children’s literature is a character education strategy that conserves classroom time because it does not infringe upon the academic schedule. The principles of character education are an effective match for guided reading activities to enhance reading comprehension and character.

Teaching One Way And Testing Another: An Interview With Scott Howell, Scott L. Howell, James L. Morrison Feb 2007

Teaching One Way And Testing Another: An Interview With Scott Howell, Scott L. Howell, James L. Morrison

Faculty Publications

I first met Scott Howell in 2005 in Jekyll Island, Georgia at the annual Distance Learning Administration (DLA) conference, which was sponsored in part by the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration (OJDLA). Scott is co-editor of the three-volume book series Online Assessment and Measurement (2005) published by IDEA group and is this year's chair of the University Continuing Education Association's (UCEA) Distance Learning Community of Practice (DLCoP). His keynote speech at the DLA conference featured a number of assessment issues and best practices. However, when I sat down to interview him, he quickly focused on one topic for which …

Agricultural Knowledge Transfer In India: A Study Of Prevailing Communication Channels, I. V. Malhan, Shivarama Rao

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract: The nature of agricultural research institutions and activities considerably influence the agriculture information sector in India. This paper describes the development of the agricultural sector in India and provides a comprehensive review of channels of agricultural knowledge transfer in India, including community projects, extension services, government initiatives, agriclinics, networks, and the role of non-governmental organizations and libraries. The paper concludes with the need for integration and consolidation of existing efforts for knowledge transfer from lab to land, and highlights the requirement of setting up a universal agricultural digital library, including content on all areas of agriculture.

Effects Of Cocaine On Monoamine Uptake As Measured Ex Vivo, Zhixia Wang, Gregory A. Ordway, William Woolverton Feb 2007

Effects Of Cocaine On Monoamine Uptake As Measured Ex Vivo, Zhixia Wang, Gregory A. Ordway, William Woolverton

ETSU Faculty Works

The increase in extracellular dopamine (DA) following cocaine administration plays a major role in cocaine abuse. In vitro, cocaine binds to DA transporters (DAT) and blocks DA uptake. Moreover, cocaine can increase extracellular DA concentration as measured by in vivo neurochemical methods. The present study examined the effects of cocaine and other drugs on DA, NE and 5-HT uptake using an ex vivo assay. Rats were injected i.v. with saline or drug and sacrificed at various time points after injections. Brains were dissected for regional monoamine uptake studies ex vivo. In most brain regions, cocaine given in vivo blocked monoamine …

Toxic Pollution In Casco Bay: Sources And Impacts, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership Feb 2007

Toxic Pollution In Casco Bay: Sources And Impacts, Casco Bay Estuary Partnership

Publications

This report complements and expands upon the information in the 2005 Casco Bay Estuary Partnership report State of the Bay. This current report, Toxic Pollution in Casco Bay, details studies undertaken by Casco Bay Estuary Partnership (CBEP) and others on some of the sources of toxic chemicals entering the Bay and its watershed, on the impacts of toxic chemicals on Casco Bay wildlife, and on potential risks to human consumers of fish and shellfish. The report does not, however, address groundwater pollution and drinking water issues. The report conludes with ways that CBEP and partner organizations are working …

Localization Of Period 1 Mrna In The Ruminant Oocyte And Investigations Of Its Role In Ovarian Function, R. A. Cushman, M.F. Allan, S.A. Jones, Gary P. Rupp, S.E. Echternkamp Feb 2007

Localization Of Period 1 Mrna In The Ruminant Oocyte And Investigations Of Its Role In Ovarian Function, R. A. Cushman, M.F. Allan, S.A. Jones, Gary P. Rupp, S.E. Echternkamp

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The clock gene Period 1 (Per1) may be a prolificacy gene, because it localized to the mouse oocyte and Per1-null drosophila shed fewer eggs. Because Per1 mapped to a region of mouse chromosome 11 syntenic to bovine chromosome 19 where a quantitative trait loci (QTL) for ovulation rate existed, we hypothesized that Per1 influenced folliculogenesis and ovulation rate in ruminants. Ovarian cortex was collected at slaughter on days 5, 12, 15, 17, and 20 after estrus for real-time RT-PCR evaluation of Per1 mRNA expression in Dorset (n = 18), Romanov (n = 10), Romanov/Dorset (n = 21), …

A Cohort Study Of Reproductive And Hormonal Factors And Renal Cell Cancer Risk In Women, Gc Kabat, Stephanie A. Navarro Silvera, Ab Miller, Te Rohan

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

We examined the association of reproductive and hormonal factors with renal cell cancer risk in a cohort study of 89 835 Canadian women. Compared with nulliparous women, parous women were at increased risk (hazard ratio (HR) 1.78, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02–3.09), and there was a significant gradient of risk with increasing levels of parity: relative to nulliparous women, women who had X5 pregnancies lasting 4 months or more had a 2.4-fold risk (HR 1⁄4 2.41, 95% CI 1⁄4 1.27–4.59, P for trend 0.01). Ever use of oral contraceptives was associated with a modest reduction in risk. No associations were …
