Teaching Outbreak Preparedness In The Emergency Medicine Clerkship: An Innovative Approach, Larissa S. May Mar 2007

Teaching Outbreak Preparedness In The Emergency Medicine Clerkship: An Innovative Approach, Larissa S. May

E-Learning Modules

Clinicians should be competent at contagious disease outbreak detection and management. Given the threat of emerging infectious diseases and biowarfare, there is a need to develop instructional methods on these topics. We have created a case-based exercise addressing sentinel case recognition, reporting, and containment. The workshop, conducted for medical students during their emergency medicine clerkship, incorporates the core competencies of systems-based practice, practice-based learning, and patient care. The workshop is held in a hospital conference room with the availability of internet, telephone, and other resources, simulating "real life." A hypothetical case of Ebola presenting to an emergency department is outlined. …

Ghrelin Effects On The Circadian System Of Mice, Paola C. Yannielli, Penny C. Molyneux, Mary E. Harrington, Diego A. Golombek Mar 2007

Ghrelin Effects On The Circadian System Of Mice, Paola C. Yannielli, Penny C. Molyneux, Mary E. Harrington, Diego A. Golombek

Psychology: Faculty Publications

The orexigenic peptide ghrelin stimulates both food intake and growth hormone release and is synthesized in the stomach and in hypothalamic areas involved in feeding control. The suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus (SCN) control most circadian rhythms, although there is evidence that some oscillators, such as food-entrainable oscillators, can drive activity rhythms even after SCN ablation. Ghrelin levels exhibit a circadian rhythm and closely follow feeding schedules, making this peptide a putative candidate for food-related entraining signals. We examined the response of the SCN to ghrelin treatments in vitro, by means of electrophysiological and bioluminescence recordings, and in vivo, by …

Faculty Journal Articles

As a social-economic historian by training I always respected and admired the work of the French Annales School and especially the way in which such historians as Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre, among others, in fact brought life into historical research and accounts and practically presented vivid almost visual representations of life in epochs long past. They, dared to step into the bedroom, the kitchen, the salon and in fact into the mentalités of historical actors. In so doing these historians present historical events through the mentalitiés of those that lived them, but without fetishising the otherness of such historical …

Candidate Sex Pheromones Of The New World Screwworm Cochliomyia Hominivorax, D.A. Carlson, Dennis Berkebile, S.R. Skoda, K. Mori, S. Mihok

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Five novel homologous acetate derivatives of long-chain secondary alcohols and a related ketone were tested for their efficacy as contact mating stimulants for Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Full copulatory behaviour at a high percentage was found in tests with racemic 6-acetoxy-19-methylnonacosane at 2.5 – 20 μg using fertile males from three strains. Males of two strains responded nearly as well to 7-acetoxy-15-methylnonacosane, but an older strain first colonized in 1992 did not respond to this compound. Few or no copulatory responses were obtained to the other secondary alcohol acetates and a related ketone. These two acetate derivatives are the …

The Nestin Progenitor Lineage Is The Compartment Of Origin For Pancreatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia, Catherine Carriere, Elliot S. Seeley, Tobias Goetze, Daniel S. Longnecker, Murray Korc Mar 2007

The Nestin Progenitor Lineage Is The Compartment Of Origin For Pancreatic Intraepithelial Neoplasia, Catherine Carriere, Elliot S. Seeley, Tobias Goetze, Daniel S. Longnecker, Murray Korc

Dartmouth Scholarship

To determine the cell compartment in which initial oncogenic mutations occur in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), we generated a mouse model in which endogenous expression of mutated Kras (Kras(G12D)) was initially directed to a population of pancreatic exocrine progenitors characterized by the expression of Nestin. Targeting of oncogenic Kras to such a restricted cell compartment was sufficient for the formation of pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasias (PanINs), putative precursors to PDAC. PanINs appeared with the same grade and frequency as observed when Kras(G12D) was targeted to the whole pancreas by a Pdx1-driven Cre recombinase strategy. Thus, the Nestin cell lineage is highly …

Biology Faculty Publications

While many studies have examined the barrier effects of large rivers on animal dispersal and gene flow, few studies have considered the barrier effects of small streams. We used displacement experiments and analyses of genetic population structure to examine the effects of first-order and second-order streams on the dispersal of terrestrial red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus (Green, 1818). We marked red-backed salamanders from near the edges of one first-order stream and one second-order stream, and experimentally displaced them either across the stream or an equal distance farther into the forest. A comparison of return rates indicated that both streams were partial …

Learning How To Speak Human, Roberto E. Bahruth Mar 2007

Learning How To Speak Human, Roberto E. Bahruth

Literacy, Language, and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Pearl S. Buck suggested so many years ago, through her character Ling Tan, the possibility of mutual understanding between people who could not speak each other's language. This is the essence of speaking human. Spoken through actions louder than words, ways of being that represent kindness, gentleness, peacefulness, a smile, eye contact, all deeply human gestures toward the other, they convey meanings that need not be translated.

Impact Of Bovine Somatotropin On Ranking For Genetic Value Of Dairy Sires For Milk Yield Traits And Somatic Cell Score, A. Al-Seaf, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck Mar 2007

Impact Of Bovine Somatotropin On Ranking For Genetic Value Of Dairy Sires For Milk Yield Traits And Somatic Cell Score, A. Al-Seaf, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Records of Holstein cows were used to examine how different models account for the effect of bovine somatotropin (bST) treatment on genetic evaluation of dairy sires for yield traits and somatic cell score. Data set 1 included 65, 720 first-lactation records. Set 2 included 50,644 second-lactation records. Set 3 included 45,505 records for lactations three, four, and five. Estimated breeding values (EBV) of sires were with three different animal models. With Model 1, bST administration was ignored. With Model 2, bST administration was used as a fixed effect. With Model 3, administration of bST was used to define the contemporary …

Estimates Of Correlations Among Yield Traits And Somatic Cell Score With Different Models To Adjust For Bovine Somatotropin Effects On Holstein Dairy Cows, A. Al-Seaf, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck Mar 2007

Estimates Of Correlations Among Yield Traits And Somatic Cell Score With Different Models To Adjust For Bovine Somatotropin Effects On Holstein Dairy Cows, A. Al-Seaf, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Records of Holstein cows from the Dairy Records Processing Center at Raleigh, NC were edited to obtain three data sets: 65,720 first, 50,694 second, and 65,445 later lactations. Correlations among yield traits and somatic cell score were estimated with three different models: 1) bovine somatotropin (bST) administration ignored, 2) bST administration as a fixed effect and 3) administration of bST as part of the contemporary group (herd-year-month-bST). Heritability estimates ranged from 0.13 to 0.17 for milk, 0.12 to 0.20 for fat, 0.14 to 0.16 for protein yields, and 0.08 to 0.09 for somatic cell score. Estimates were less for later …
