Vegetation Monitoring

Executive Summary

  • Weed Sentry staff surveyed for exotic species on 208 miles of roads on NPS land and on 61 miles of BLM land. Due to sparse precipitation this winter, exotic species are much less abundant this year compared to last year at this time.
  • Other exotic species projects initiated this quarter included an assessment of invasion patterns below native shrubs for early detection of potential invasion “hotspots,” and a community invasibility experiment established near the NPS nursery with substantial involvement from NPS ATR Ms. Alice Newton.
  • A manuscript detailing several experiments with the invasive species Sahara mustard was submitted …

Project 1. Relict Leopard Frog Monitoring, Management, and Research

  • Spring-time diurnal surveys for relict leopard frogs were conducted at all sites.
  • Relict leopard frog annual translocation effort was initiated. Currently, 2,153 tadpoles are being reared at the Hill Top and Willow Beach Fish Hatchery facilities. Quagga mussels found at the hatchery might not be as problematic for this program as originally thought. Current prophylactic protocols for disease treatment in tadpoles and frogs are being evaluated for their ability to kill quagga mussel larvae.
  • Coordination and monitoring was provided to EPMT crews conducting tamarisk control at relict leopard frog sites in …

The World Health Organization Age-Friendly Cities Project In Portland, Oregon, Usa, Margaret B. Neal, Alan Kenneth Delatorre

Institute on Aging Publications

The older population is increasing in size in Portland, the state of Oregon, the United States, and the rest of the world. Our cities and regions are vital to the support of this demographic shift through the provision of quality built environments, services, and social, cultural, and civic engagement opportunities promote healthy and active aging.

Over the next 30 years, the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area will see dramatic growth in the proportion of the population that is aged 65 and older. Although the total population will increase by 47 percent, the 65+ population will more than double, growing by over 137 …

Suppression Of Dgat2 Expression Improves Hepatic Steatosis And Prevents Fat Induced Insulin Resistance, Ameya Kulkarni Mar 2007

Suppression Of Dgat2 Expression Improves Hepatic Steatosis And Prevents Fat Induced Insulin Resistance, Ameya Kulkarni

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

It is well known that metabolites resulting from the accumulation of fat in tissue results in fatty liver, obesity, and insulin resistance. Because triglyceride synthesis is essential for this process, inhibition of the final step of TG synthesis has been considered as a new therapeutic target for hepatosteatosis and insulin resistance. In this study, we investigated the metabolic impact of acyl CoA: diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (DGAT1) and 2 (DGAT2) suppression. We used antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) to reduce the expression of these enzymes in liver and fat in Sprague Dawley rats fed a 27% safflower oil high fat diet (HFD) for …

Response Of A Native Bamboo [Arundinaria Gigantea (Walt.) Muhl.] In A Wind-Disturbed Forest, Paul R. Gagnon, William J. Platt, E. Barry Moser Mar 2007

Response Of A Native Bamboo [Arundinaria Gigantea (Walt.) Muhl.] In A Wind-Disturbed Forest, Paul R. Gagnon, William J. Platt, E. Barry Moser

Faculty Publications

Numerous bamboos are known to form extensive single-species stands, including species in the United States. Formerly prominent in the southeastern US, canebrakes are dense stands of the bamboos collectively called "cane" [Arundinaria (Michx)]. Canebrakes are now a critically endangered component of the bottomland hardwood forest ecosystem. Cane still occurs in its historic range, primarily in small remnant patches. A poor understanding of the ecological processes that generated large canebrakes limits their restoration and management. We hypothesize that cane's spreading clonal structure enables these bamboos to persist beneath a forest canopy and then respond rapidly to large-scale wind disturbances. We quantified …

Post-Absurdism: Ionesco And The Juxtaposition Of Absurdism And Postmodernism, Elizabeth B. Harbaugh Mar 2007

Post-Absurdism: Ionesco And The Juxtaposition Of Absurdism And Postmodernism, Elizabeth B. Harbaugh

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The purpose of this paper is to situate Eugène Ionesco’s dramatic works within an historical, literary, and theoretical framework. By examining the influences of both absurdism and postmodernism on Eugène Ionesco’s work, we can discern specific cultural and philosophical issues concerning Europeans, artists, and the general world population following the Second World War. Eugène Ionesco’s works are ultimately extremely historically and theatrically significant and worthy of study, despite a contemporary distance from absurdism as a worthy field of study.

Biological Factors And Beyond: The Negative Impacts Of Radiation And Radioactivity, Supraja Kolluri, Marisa Abrahiem, Pamela Kolonias, Justin Chambers Mar 2007

Biological Factors And Beyond: The Negative Impacts Of Radiation And Radioactivity, Supraja Kolluri, Marisa Abrahiem, Pamela Kolonias, Justin Chambers

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Exposure to radiation from both natural and man-made sources leads to biological damage at any dosage. Lower doses can result in vomiting and blood count changes, while higher doses can lead to cancerous growths and death. With the implementation of technological advances that utilize radioactive substances, humans and the environment are being exposed to levels of harmful radiation. Thus, the objective of this presentation is to elucidate the biological, social, and environmental effects of radiation by examining past nuclear disasters and experimental research.

Control And Uncontrollable Bonding, Ryan Frabizio Mar 2007

Control And Uncontrollable Bonding, Ryan Frabizio

Undergraduate Student Symposium

For my project I studied Mona Simpson’s novel Anywhere But Here, as well as the film based on Simpson’s novel. It is a story of a woman, Adele, and her daughter, Ann. Though the novel deals with potentially universal issues pertaining to motherhood and childhood, Simpson focuses these down into a woman-to-younger-woman relationship. Adele is a single mother, and some of the novel relates the issues of single working mothers’ balancing of motherhood with professional, familial, and romantic relationships. Ann grows up during the novel often contemplating her frustrations with her mother, and how she will react when she …

A Cure For Poverty, Naika Gabriel, Jessica Husted

Undergraduate Student Symposium

We affirm that poverty is a multidimensional disease and its eradication centers on sustainable economic development. The report focuses on the determinant of growth in general and its impact on GAI and Grameen Bank. It has been found that investment in human capital, physical capital, technological change, education and training are the key determinants of future, sustainable growth.
