Prevalence And Correlates Of Neural Tube Defect In South West Iran Retrospective Analysis, Ahmad Behrooz, Mohammad H. Gorjizadeh
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objective: In view of the large number of pregnancies complicated by neural tube defect (NTD) in Khuzestan, south west Iran, this study assesses the prevalence of NTD and its ecological and social factors. Methods: This is a retrospective study, based on medical documents using an analytic assessment of NTDs in pregnant women attending the Jundi Shapur University hospitals in Ahvaz from 21 March 2002 to 20 March 2004. Results: The total number of pregnant women was 13,262 and 56 pregnancies were complicated with NTD. A large number of the infants with NTDs were female (70%) and the most common anomaly …

Final Report: Shf Channel Modeling Over Sea-Based Test Ranges, Qiang Lei, Michael D. Rice
Faculty Publications
This work was supported by the Science & Technology Test & Evaluation Spectrum Efficient Technologies Program sponsored by the US Air Force under contract F04611-02-C-0020. Channel sounding data collected from an airborne transmitter over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Pt. Mugu, Naval Air Station, was analyzed and used to model multipath propagation over the ocean. The experiments showed that at 8.000 GHz, over the water multipath propagation is well modeled by a three-ray propagation model. The first ray (or propagation path) is the line-of-sight propagation path. The second ray is a strong specular reflection determined by the geometry …

If They Can Raze It, Why Can't I? A Constitutional Analysis Of Statutory And Judicial Religious Exemptions To Historic Preservation Ordinances, Erin Guiffre
Georgetown Law Historic Preservation Papers Series
In 1996, America almost lost a great piece of its history. The Cathedral of Saint Vibiana, located in Los Angeles, was in danger of being destroyed. The "Baroque-inspired Italianate structure" was completed in 1876 by architect Ezra F. Kysor. The cathedral is one of only a few structures from Los Angeles' early history remaining. As an important part of history and a beautiful piece of architecture, the cathedral was listed on California's register of historic places. In 1994, an earthquake damaged part of the building. After an inspection by the building and safety department in 1996, the only portion of …

Technical Paper Session Ii - Making Waves: A 3d Software Simulation Of Wave Creation And Propagation, Daniel Brandenburg
Technical Paper Session Ii - Making Waves: A 3d Software Simulation Of Wave Creation And Propagation, Daniel Brandenburg
Space Congress® Proceedings
The purpose of this project was to develop software to model water wave creation and wave propagation in 3D, explicitly modeling interference, reflection, diffraction, and attenuation.
This project consisted of two distinct procedures; software development and laboratory work. Software Development resulted in the ability to specify wave pool dimensions, simulate wave propagation, and display the water surface in 3D. Three separate programs were created; a wave pool editor, a calculation compiler, and a program that plays the simulation. Laboratory Work consisted of building a wave pool one meter square by ½ a meter deep, developing measurement techniques, 102 drop tests …

Dewey's Concepts Of Stability And Precariousness In His Philosophy Of Education, Fred G. Harris
Dewey's Concepts Of Stability And Precariousness In His Philosophy Of Education, Fred G. Harris
Education and Culture
This article connects two of Dewey’s generic traits of existence—stability and precariousness—to four elements specified in his preface to Democracy and Education (democracy, evolution, industrialization and the experimental method) and one element specified in his preface to How We Think (childhood). It argues that Dewey’s metaphysics of stability and precariousness is implicit in his philosophy of education and provides a unifying aspect to his philosophy of education that is relevant to the modern world. The article then briefly looks at whether Dewey developed a metaphysics at all and concludes that Dewey did indeed develop a metaphysics—a new metaphysics of human …
Brazil Pushes To Expand Ethanol Industry With Multiple International Deals, Notisur Writers
Brazil Pushes To Expand Ethanol Industry With Multiple International Deals, Notisur Writers
NotiEn: An Analytical Digest About Energy Issues in Latin America
Brazil's government has been aggressively promoting its ethanol industry, seeking to capitalize on high fuel costs by selling the fuel derived from various crops like corn and sugar. In the drive to triple the volume of ethanol exports, Brazil has signed multiple international energy agreements, most notably with the US, its biggest customer. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's effort to expand ethanol production has faced criticism externally from Latin American leaders like Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez and Cuba's President Fidel Castro and internally from poor people's movements and environmentalists. Among these criticisms are assertions that using food crops for …
Pest Risk Assessment For Feral Pigs In Oregon, Bruce Coblentz, Cassie Bouska
Pest Risk Assessment For Feral Pigs In Oregon, Bruce Coblentz, Cassie Bouska
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
Feral pigs, wild boars, and hybrids either currently inhabit, or have been successfully introduced to every continent except Antarctica, and many oceanic islands. There are thirteen current known localities of feral pigs in Oregon (see Appendix A), distributed in various locations in southern and central Oregon. The biology of feral pigs indicates that these animals are capable of inhabiting virtually all available habitat west of the Cascade mountains, and the majority of the habitat east of the Cascades, with preference for riparian regions. Reports of feral pig biology and ecology in other regions in the United States, as well as …

Effects Of Exposure To Perinatal Ultrasound Radiation On Information Processing In The Auditory System, Jennifer Burnett
Effects Of Exposure To Perinatal Ultrasound Radiation On Information Processing In The Auditory System, Jennifer Burnett
Theses and Dissertations
Ultrasound (US) has become a standard procedure used during pregnancy to document the health and development of a fetus. When ultrasound was first developed, some researchers urged caution, suggesting that the possibility of hazard should be kept under constant review. Given the routine application of fetal ultrasound imaging, any possibility of deleterious developmental effects resulting from its use is an important public health issue. Rats have a well characterized central nervous system whose neurochemical pathways and neuronal electrophysiology qualitatively correspond to those of humans. Because of this, we opted to use Wistar rats as an animal model to document effects …

Transformations Of Menace: Naomi Wallace's Multiplicity Of Threat And The Legacy Of Harold Pinter, Charles Haugland '07
Transformations Of Menace: Naomi Wallace's Multiplicity Of Threat And The Legacy Of Harold Pinter, Charles Haugland '07
Honors Projects
The focus of critical scholarship on contemporary American playwright Naomi Wallace has overwhelmingly been a drive toward theorizing a vision of utopia in her work, frequently finding her plays to be optimistic in resolution. The diversity of critical approaches in prior articles, though complementary, is striking. Perhaps, as Shannon Baley argues, Wallace imagines moments of a feminist "utopia" in which the barriers of "genders, class and sexuality" can be broken down (239). Using examples of non-normative sexuality present in Wallace's drama, Baley focuses on the way that the drama enacts a cultural feminist viewpoint. Perhaps alternately, Wallace paradoxically joins "death …

Implementation Of A Reading Curriculum In A 6 Week Summer Enrichment Program, Katie J. Holz-Russell
Implementation Of A Reading Curriculum In A 6 Week Summer Enrichment Program, Katie J. Holz-Russell
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
In this research project, the author presents an enrichment curriculum that will be implemented in the Denver Summerbridge 6 week summer school program. Denver public school students choose to attend this program because they are seeking academic enrichment during the summer. They seek enrichment from Denver Summerbridge because most supplementary programs at their home schools focus on closing the achievement gap and increasing standardized test scores, rather than offering a structured enrichment program for gifted students. The curriculum presented in Chapter 4 provides a framework for a 9th grade literacy classroom. The author attempted to strike a balance between reviewing …
