Given the recent report of a false-positive result in the Platelia Aspergillus enzyme immunoassay in a patient with cryptococcosis and in yeast extracts and purified galactoxylomannan of Cryptococcus neoformans, we evaluated culture extracts, purified polysaccharides, clinical specimens, and specimens from animals following experimental infection. Our results revealed no cross-reactions.
Trabecular Calcium Phosphate Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Mark Ryan Appleford
Trabecular Calcium Phosphate Scaffolds For Bone Regeneration, Mark Ryan Appleford
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Bone tissue engineering represents a strategy for the repair or regeneration of damaged bone in the body. The science underlying this clinical therapy bridges the traditional fields of cell biology, materials science and mechanical engineering with the aim to identify how cells behave on physiologically relevant materials with natural mechanical stimuli. The objectives of this research were to develop and characterize calcium phosphate ceramic scaffolds matched to the local architecture of natural trabecular bone and to apply tissue engineering strategies for the study of cell behavior in both in vitro and in vivo models. The specific role of environment on cell …
Depth And Size Limits For The Visibility Of Veins Using The Veinviewer Imaging System, Soujanya Ganesh
Depth And Size Limits For The Visibility Of Veins Using The Veinviewer Imaging System, Soujanya Ganesh
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Administration of fluids or medication and blood draw procedures require the nurse or the phlebotomist to access the veins in patients at hospitals or phlebotomy centers. It is important to minimize the discomfort associated with sticking needles in the patient more than once and most often, necessary to find an appropriate vein within few minutes. However, problems involved in accessing veins in pediatric and obese patients make it very difficult to perform a successful stick in a short time. The VeinViewer Imaging System is an infrared imaging device that provides the nurses and phlebotomists a means for locating veins in …
Gaming The System: The Seventh Circuit Prefers Its Video Games Violent, Not Sexy, Michael J. Aschenbrener
Gaming The System: The Seventh Circuit Prefers Its Video Games Violent, Not Sexy, Michael J. Aschenbrener
Seventh Circuit Review
The U.S. Supreme Court holds that obscenity warrants no First Amendment protection whereas violent speech garners complete constitutional protection. In Entertainment Software Association v. Blagojevich, et al., the Seventh Circuit struck down two statutes regulating the sale of sexually explicit and violent video games to minors for violating the First Amendment. While the Seventh Circuit correctly applied Supreme Court precedent, it strained to find any logic to support holding the two categories of speech to different levels of protection. Accordingly, this Note will argue that the Supreme Court should grant full First Amendment protection to obscenity. It will also …
Licensee Beware: The Seventh Circuit Holds That A Patent License By Any Other Name Is Not The Same, Cameron R. Sneddon
Licensee Beware: The Seventh Circuit Holds That A Patent License By Any Other Name Is Not The Same, Cameron R. Sneddon
Seventh Circuit Review
In a case of first impression, the Seventh Circuit incorrectly held that a settlement agreement for patent infringement may never be considered a license. In Waterloo Furniture Components Ltd. v. Haworth, Inc., the court mischaracterizes the nature of license agreements and their relationship to the rights of patent holders. It does so by drawing a potential false dichotomy between settlements and licensing agreements. In this holding, the court misunderstands the purpose of a license agreement, its legal effects, and its dual prospective and retrospective qualities as recognized by the Federal Circuit and other appellate courts.

Managing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures In South Dakota, Eric M. Mousel, Alexander J. Smart
Managing Smooth Bromegrass Pastures In South Dakota, Eric M. Mousel, Alexander J. Smart
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Smooth bromegrass is a cool-season grass introduced into the U.S. in the latter part of the 19th century. Because of its highly developed root system, smooth bromegrass is resistant to wide temperature extremes and extensive drought. This resistance has allowed it to become a dominant species in pastures and on native rangeland in eastern and central South Dakota. It is a leafy and sod-forming perennial that spreads aggressively through seeds and rhizomes and establishes well on deep, well-drained silt, clay loam, or sandy soils (Fig 1).

Darfur: Genocide In The 21st Century, Victoria Goff
Senior Honors Projects
The conflict in Darfur has been described as the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis” by the United Nations, and the United States has condemned the war as genocide. But four years later, the death toll of 200,000 continues to rise. At least another 2.5 million have been displaced, and neighboring countries have declared a state of emergency. Unless something is done to stop the violence, the chaos will continue to spread. Frustrated with lack of representation in the government, rebel groups from Darfur – the western region of Africa’s largest country, Sudan – revolted against its national government in 2003. The …
A Comparison Of Pyronin Y-Methyl Green Stain And Methylene Blue Stain For Somatic Cell Count In Sheep Milk, Emily Mirek, Stacey O’Donnell
A Comparison Of Pyronin Y-Methyl Green Stain And Methylene Blue Stain For Somatic Cell Count In Sheep Milk, Emily Mirek, Stacey O’Donnell
Senior Honors Projects
Somatic cell count is a key method used to evaluate the quality of milk in today’s growing dairy sheep industry. Somatic cells are body cells, primarily the white blood cells, found in a milk sample. If an infection such as mastitis is present, the number of somatic cells in the milk increases (Gonzalo, et al. 1992). Producers routinely perform somatic cell counts on cow and goat milk. For dairy cattle in the United States, the somatic cell count can not exceed 750,000 cells per milliliter, for commercial milk. For dairy goats the accepted limit is 1,000,000 cells per mL of …
Mechanics Of Suction Generation During Feeding In Little Skates, Danielle Duquette
Mechanics Of Suction Generation During Feeding In Little Skates, Danielle Duquette
Senior Honors Projects
Feeding mechanisms of aquatic vertebrates has been extensively studied in the past, while that of elasmobranchs remains limited. Skates and rays are believed to have evolved from a shark ancestor, thus they represent the most derived group. All skates are dorsoventrally compressed, have a unique jaw suspension type and head skeleton and live in benthic environments. It is unknown whether these derived features of skates have altered the ancestral shark feeding mechanism. Comparing feeding mechanisms in skates and sharks may shed light on morphological transformations that have arisen after the evolutionary split of these two groups. In this study prey …

A Review Of Marcus Borg's Meeting Jesus Again For The First Time, Sean P. Connors
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time was written by Marcus J. Borg and was first published in 1994. Much of the information and theories found within the book came from and annual lecture Borg gave at the Northern California Conference of the United Church of Christ at Asilomar, California in 1992. The main idea of Borg’s novel is that “there is a strong connection between images of Jesus and images of the Christian life, between how we think of Jesus and how we think of the Christian …

Printability And Environmental Testing Using Silver-Based Conductive Flexographic Ink Printed On A Polyamide Substrate, Kathryn Cole
Printability And Environmental Testing Using Silver-Based Conductive Flexographic Ink Printed On A Polyamide Substrate, Kathryn Cole
Theses
The effect of simulated environmental exposure conditions (high heat, freezing temperature, rain, and vacuum pressure) on the performance of a silver-based conductive flexo ink printed on a polyamide (nylon 6,6) substrate was examined. Conductivity, density, color, adhesion, abrasion resistance and creasing were evaluated. The tested environmental variables did not have an effect on the performance quality of silver conductive flexographic ink when printed on a polyamide substrate for the 85 – 100% solid ink density levels. Rain and temperature had the greatest impact on print performance in the 70–80% tint range. Exposure to these elements affected adhesion properties of the …

Regional wildlife–habitat models are commonly developed but rarely tested with truly independent data. We tested a published habitat model for black bears (Ursus americanus) with new data collected in a different site in the same ecological region (i.e., Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, USA). We used a Mahalanobis distance model developed from relocations of black bears in Arkansas to produce a map layer of Mahalanobis distances on a study area in neighboring Oklahoma. We tested this modeled map layer with relocations of black bears on the Oklahoma area. The distributions of relocations of female black bears were …
Invasive Alien Species In An Era Of Globalization, Laura A. Meyerson, Harold A. Mooney
Invasive Alien Species In An Era Of Globalization, Laura A. Meyerson, Harold A. Mooney
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Globalization facilitates the spread of invasive alien species (IAS) as international commerce develops new trade routes, markets, and products. New technologies increase the pace at which humans and commodities can move around the world. Recent research on IAS at the global scale has examined commerce and travel in order to inform predictions, risk analyses, and policy. Due to limited data, regional-scale studies have primarily focused on invasion patterns rather than impacts. Local-scale experimental research can identify mechanisms and impacts of biological invasions, but the results may not be applicable at larger spatial scales. However, the number of information networks devoted …

Nietzsche’S Doctrine Of Eternal Return, David R. Gadon
Nietzsche’S Doctrine Of Eternal Return, David R. Gadon
Senior Honors Projects
In Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Friedrich Nietzsche challenges the reader to imagine that every moment of his or her life, every joy and every sorrow, every smile and every tear, will be repeated in exactly the same way from beginning to end. He asks us to envision these things recurring, not one more time, but for all infinity into the past and future alike. Amongst the many revolutionary and profound concepts put forward by the witty and vitriolic Nietzsche, there is none as inscrutable and seemingly inapproachable as this doctrine of eternal return of the same. In just three of his …
