Relationships Between Motility, Fertility And Cellular Characteristics Of Spermatozoa, And The Ability Of Platelet-Activating Factor To Influence Porcine Productivity, Jennifer Mook
All Dissertations
Differences between manual and machine motility analysis was determined for total motility (MOT) of bull semen samples (N=117) three ways: manual analysis on a microscope and on computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) systems: Hamilton-Thorne IVOS and Minitube SpermVision (SV). CASA analysis includes progressive motility (PRO) and related kinematic parameters. Analysis indicated differences between MOT: 83.06 (IVOS), 75.84 (manual), 65.48 (SV), and PRO: 44.25 (IVOS) and 60.07(SV). Relationships existed between manual MOT and both IVOS MOT (r=0.32) and SV MOT (r=0.59). The relationships between IVOS and SV MOT and PRO was notable (r=0.70 for both MOT and PRO).

Lighting With Sketches, Alexander Wakefield Steinberg
Lighting With Sketches, Alexander Wakefield Steinberg
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Lighting design is a fundamental aspect of computer cinematography, where it is used to support storytelling by affecting the mood, style, and believability of a scene. Traditionally, lighting has requred the tedious adjustment of large set parameters that describe complex lighting setups, including lights positions, colors, shapes, etc. This work presents an interactive user interface that facilitates lighting workflow by using a sketching paradigm for light creation. Lights are specified by a series of strokes that define various properties of illumination such as shape of the light and position of illuminated and shadowed areass. The system will them perform a …

Developing Environmental Education, Nature-Based Tourism, And Outdoor Recreation Initiatives On A Solid Waste Management Site In Conway, South Carolina, David Dantzler
All Theses
The Horry County South Carolina Solid Waste Authority wanted to create a space that could serve the duties of the landfill and as an environmental education and recreation facility on a tract of land they own. Several areas of minimal ecological importance are used as sorting facilities for storm debris and cap dirt excavation areas for use on the active landfill. The remainder of the tract is planned for the development of an environmental education, nature-based tourism, and outdoor recreation center. A natural resources management plan was produced to promote and protect the ecological diversity of the tract. A geographic …

Using Hyperosmolar Stress To Measure Biologic And Stress-Activated Protein Kinase Responses In Preimplantation Embryos, Yufen Xie, W Zhong, Y Wang, A Trostinskaia, F Wang, Elizabeth E. Puscheck, D. A. Rappolee
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Publications
We used hyperosmolar stress to test blastocysts for their biologic and enzymatic responses to culture stress. Embryos mount dose- and time-dependent responses to hyperosmolar stress. Biological responses included slowed cavitation and cell accumulation and increased apoptosis at increasing doses. These responses were preceded by stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK) phosphorylation and nuclear translocation consistent with its causal role. For cavitation and new cell cycle initiation, 200 mM sorbitol caused stasis. Above 200 mM, sorbitol was ultimately lethal and below 200 mM, its embryos had milder effects. Phosphorylated SAPK was induced rapidly in embryos at 0.5 h in a dose-dependent manner from …

Review Of The Maximum Likelihood Functions For Right Censored Data. A New Elementary Derivation., Stefano Patti, Elia Biganzoli, Patrizia Boracchi
COBRA Preprint Series
Censoring is a well known feature recurrent in the analysis of lifetime data, occurring in the model when exact lifetimes can be collected for only a representative portion of the surveyed individuals. If lifetimes are known only to exceed some given values, it is referred to as right censoring. In this paper we propose a systematization and a new derivation of the likelihood function for right censored sampling schemes; calculations are reported and assumptions are carefully stated. The sampling schemes considered (Type I, II and Random Censoring) give rise to the same ML function. Only the knowledge of elementary probability …

Watershed Access Lab Projects
The Whitman-Hanson Regional High School now occupies a new facility which was opened in September of 2005. The school was built as a “green school,” with numerous energy saving and environmentally beneficial features. Several new wetlands were created to deal with runoff from the grounds and building. Students in the RiverNet Club began investigating the on site wetlands which were being utilized by vernal pool animals for breeding. The observations led to questions about our environmental footprint. The runoff from the roof is collected and is used to flush the toilets. There are solar collectors on the roof. The parking …

Social Norms: Actual Versus Perceived Alcohol Consumption Of College Freshmen, Erick M. Nuñez
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the actual frequency of alcohol consumption of college freshmen (n = 84) and the students residential status. The participants consisted of fifty-six resident students and twenty-eight commuter students. The frequency of alcohol consumption by students in general as perceived by the participants was also analyzed. The secondary purpose was explore a relationship between actual alcohol drinking norms and perceived alcohol drinking norms. The Campus Survey of Alcohol and Other Drug Norms were administered and analyzed using basic tables. Results demonstrated that freshmen resident students consume alcohol at a greater …
The Nasal Cavity Is A Route For Prion Infection In Hamsters, Anthony E. Kincaid, Jason C. Bartz
The Nasal Cavity Is A Route For Prion Infection In Hamsters, Anthony E. Kincaid, Jason C. Bartz
Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications
Animals that naturally acquire the prion diseases have a well-developed olfactory sense that they utilize for a variety of basic behaviors. To assess the potential for the nasal cavity to serve as a point of entry for prion diseases, a small amount of prion-infected brain homogenate was placed inferior to the nostrils of hamsters, where it was immediately sniffed into the nasal cavity. Hamsters extranasally inoculated with the HY strain of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) agent had an incubation period that was not significantly different from per os inoculation of the same dose of the HY TME agent. However, the …
Searching For Community Online: How Virtual Spaces Affect Student Notions Of Community, Emma S. Spiro
Searching For Community Online: How Virtual Spaces Affect Student Notions Of Community, Emma S. Spiro
Pomona Senior Theses
Social networking sites and virtual spaces have flourished in the past few years. The author explores the impact of such social networking services on the local community at a small liberal arts college. The author investigates modern trends in community theory. Defining community has become more difficult in modern society, where community is no longer easily distinguished by geographical boundaries. From the background of modern community theory the author explores the designation of virtual spaces as “virtual communities.” Literature and research about virtual spaces indicates that they can provide many of the values thought be to inherent to community membership. …

National Animal Identification System (Nais): The Road Ahead, Matthew Stockton, Roger K. Wilson
Cornhusker Economics
The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) has been a widely discussed concern of livestock owners and producers since it was first conceived. The movement of animals and their products has created a need to identify sources of disease outbreaks and to assure consumers of product quality and safety to reduce possible individual firm and industry losses. This issue is sometimes confused with COOL, Country of Origin Labeling, which is an economically motivated issue, and is focused on differences consumers might place on domestically produced beef. As a policy matter, NAIS is basic in concept but has many complex hurdles to …
Myosin Ii Isoforms In Smooth Muscle: Heterogeneity And Function, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer
Myosin Ii Isoforms In Smooth Muscle: Heterogeneity And Function, Thomas J. Eddinger, Daniel P. Meer
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Both smooth muscle (SM) and nonmuscle class II myosin molecules are expressed in SM tissues comprising hollow organ systems. Individual SM cells may express one or more of multiple myosin II isoforms that differ in myosin heavy chain (MHC) and myosin light chain (MLC) subunits. Although much has been learned, the expression profiles, organization within contractile filaments, localization within cells, and precise roles in various contractile functions of these different myosin molecules are still not well understood. However, data supporting unique physiological roles for certain isoforms continues to build. Isoform differences located in the S1 head region of the MHC …
Creating Convincing And Dramatic Light Transitions For Computer Animation, Rupali Parekh
Creating Convincing And Dramatic Light Transitions For Computer Animation, Rupali Parekh
All Theses
Lighting and atmospheric changes are complex phenomena that exist in nature; therefore replicating them using computer graphics can be quite challenging. Subtle changes in light conditions can greatly affect the mood or perception of the viewer and has been an important component of film making. With ever increasing technology and computing resources, filmmakers continue to strive to produce such complex effects that enhance their storytelling. Light transition (e.g.; day to night), continuously moving light sources, and dramatic change in seasons have been the focus of experimentation for many films. Most studios have therefore developed their own pipeline to create such …

The Estuarine Killifish, Fundulus Heteroclitus, As A Model System For Developmental Immunotoxicology , Laura Hunt
All Dissertations
Little is known about the development of the immune system in estuarine teleosts. The aim of this study was to describe the disappearance of maternally-derived immune components of immunity and the development of the immune system in the estuarine killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, also known as the mummichog. Maternal-derived IgM was measured by ELISA and whole body lysozyme levels were determined by both enzymatic and immunological methods. Recombination activation gene-1 (Rag-1) expression was quantified using real time quantitative PCR and organ development was monitored using histological techniques. Rag-1 was cloned from F.heteroclitus and a recombinant Rag-1 protein was expressed for the …
