The Kinesin-13 Proteins Kif2a, Kif2b, And Kif2c/Mcak Have Distinct Roles During Mitosis In Human Cells, Amity L. Manning, Neil J. Ganem, Samuel F. Bakhoum, Michael Wagenbach, Linda Wordeman, Duane A. Compton May 2007

The Kinesin-13 Proteins Kif2a, Kif2b, And Kif2c/Mcak Have Distinct Roles During Mitosis In Human Cells, Amity L. Manning, Neil J. Ganem, Samuel F. Bakhoum, Michael Wagenbach, Linda Wordeman, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

The human genome has three unique genes coding for kinesin-13 proteins called Kif2a, Kif2b, and MCAK (Kif2c). Kif2a and MCAK have documented roles in mitosis, but the function of Kif2b has not been defined. Here, we show that Kif2b is expressed at very low levels in cultured cells and that GFP-Kif2b localizes predominately to centrosomes and midbodies, but also to spindle microtubules and transiently to kinetochores. Kif2b-deficient cells assemble monopolar or disorganized spindles. Chromosomes in Kif2b-deficient cells show typical kinetochore-microtubule attachments, but the velocity of movement is reduced ∼80% compared with control cells. Some Kif2b-deficient cells attempt anaphase, but the …

Scml: A Structural Representation For Chinese Characters, Daniel G. Peebles May 2007

Scml: A Structural Representation For Chinese Characters, Daniel G. Peebles

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Chinese characters are used daily by well over a billion people. They constitute the main writing system of China and Taiwan, form a major part of written Japanese, and are also used in South Korea. Anything more than a cursory glance at these characters will reveal a high degree of structure to them, but computing systems do not currently have a means to operate on this structure. Existing character databases and dictionaries treat them as numerical code points, and associate with them additional `hand-computed' data, such as stroke count, stroke order, and other information to aid in specific searches. Searching …

Laboratory Findings In Acute Cytauxzoon Felis Infection In Cougars (Puma Concolor Couguar) In Florida, John W. Harvey, Mike R. Dunbar, Terry M. Norton, Michael J. Yabsley May 2007

Laboratory Findings In Acute Cytauxzoon Felis Infection In Cougars (Puma Concolor Couguar) In Florida, John W. Harvey, Mike R. Dunbar, Terry M. Norton, Michael J. Yabsley

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Intraerythrocytic piroplasms, morphologically indistinguishable from Cytauxzoon felis, were identified in stained blood films from more than one third of free-ranging cougars (Puma concolor cougar) in southern Florida in a study that failed to demonstrate negative effects of piroplasm infection on measured hematologic parameters. However, a recent study with a nested 18s rRNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay identified only 9% of the free-ranging cougars in southern Florida as infected with C. felis but found 83% of these animals were infected with an unnamed small Babesia sp. In this study, hematology and clinical chemistry parameters were determined during …

A Maslovian Approach To The Motivations Of Shakespeare’S Transvestite Heroines In The Two Gentelmen Of Verona, As You Like It, And The Merchant Of Venice, Angela Eward-Mangione May 2007

A Maslovian Approach To The Motivations Of Shakespeare’S Transvestite Heroines In The Two Gentelmen Of Verona, As You Like It, And The Merchant Of Venice, Angela Eward-Mangione

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

"Motivation" is the force that drives an individual to perform a certain action. Abraham Maslow (1908-1970), an American psychologist profoundly influenced by the existential and teleological paradigms, expounded a motivation theory that remains precise and replicable, as well as applicable to other spheres of study, including the humanities. Indeed, psychology experts and non-specialists are by and large familiar with Maslow's Pyramid of Human Needs. Moreover, despite the abundance of literary criticism that utilizes Freudian-based theory to analyze the motivations of literary characters, critics have largely neglected the use of other paradigms, including Maslow's. In this thesis, I use Maslow's texts …

Parasites Alter Community Structure, Chelsea L. Wood, James E. Byers, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Irit Altman May 2007

Parasites Alter Community Structure, Chelsea L. Wood, James E. Byers, Kathryn L. Cottingham, Irit Altman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Parasites often play an important role in modifying the physiology and behavior of their hosts and may, consequently, mediate the influence hosts have on other components of an ecological community. Along the northern Atlantic coast of North America, the dominant herbivorous snail Littorina littorea structures rocky intertidal communities through strong grazing pressure and is frequently parasitized by the digenean trematode Cryptocotyle lingua. We hypothesized that the effects of parasitism on host physiology would induce behavioral changes in L. littorea, which in turn would modulate L. littorea's influence on intertidal community composition. Specifically, we hypothesized that C. lingua …

Mapping The Meaning Of Knowledge In Design Research, Kristina Niedderer May 2007

Mapping The Meaning Of Knowledge In Design Research, Kristina Niedderer

Nordes Conference Series

Knowledge plays a vital role in our life in that it reflects how we understand the world around us and thus determines how we act upon it. In this sense, knowledge is of particular importance for designers because they act to shape our world. Conventionally, knowledge creation has been assumed by (design) research. However developments of using practice within research have pointed to knowledge creation within and through practice. This has raised the question about the meaning, role and format of knowledge in both research and practice, and about the compatibility between both. In due course, the research presented in …

Ethical Implications Of Design Practices: The Case Of Industrially Manufactured Patient Clothing In Finland, Sonja Iltanen May 2007

Ethical Implications Of Design Practices: The Case Of Industrially Manufactured Patient Clothing In Finland, Sonja Iltanen

Nordes Conference Series

In the following article, we describe the actors and practices influencing design of patient clothing in Finland. We also discuss the ethical dimensions and issues that can be identified in this process and in decisions concerning patient clothing. In our data, designing patient clothing is represented as a highly complex net of conflicting needs. According to our findings ethical issues in patient design were associated with ethical principles of efficiency, beneficence, privacy and autonomy.

Types Of Fashion Design And Pattern-Making Practice, Timo Rissanen May 2007

Types Of Fashion Design And Pattern-Making Practice, Timo Rissanen

Nordes Conference Series

This article originates from a PhD research project that investigates the elimination of fabric waste from the production of clothing. Most efforts to reduce the amount of fabric waste have centred on various types of marker-making software that place the garment pieces on a length of fabric as tightly as possible. Despite these efforts, in adult outerwear on average 15 percent of the total fabric used is wasted at the cutting out stage, according to Cooklin (1997: 9). Feyerabend’s estimate is 10 to 20 percent (2004: 4), while Abernathy, Dunlop et al. (1999: 136) put the figure at 10 percent …

Man Bites Dog: Two Paradoxes As Agents Of Knowledge: Artefact-Accident/ Hospitality-Hostility, Martin Avila May 2007

Man Bites Dog: Two Paradoxes As Agents Of Knowledge: Artefact-Accident/ Hospitality-Hostility, Martin Avila

Nordes Conference Series

Design deals with the making of the artificial, and produces new knowledge by introducing new artefacts –that may or may not be physical threedimensional products. Further understanding of these man-made creations would provide us with insight into what is accessible (hospitable) to decipherment, that is, to the sharing of knowledge. Awareness of the paradoxical relations artefact-accident and hospitalityhostility can increase our insight into the articulations between artefacts, people’s individual representations and cultural laws. This would enable the further development of theoretical models for understanding complex situations for the refinement of design practices; a privileged dimension where much knowledge production remains …

Applying Probes As An Inspirational Research Tool For Fashion Design, Leena Lundgaard, Ulrik Martin Larsen May 2007

Applying Probes As An Inspirational Research Tool For Fashion Design, Leena Lundgaard, Ulrik Martin Larsen

Nordes Conference Series

In general fashion design is a design fi eld where users are seldom directly involved in the design process. It is only when developing very specifi ctypes of garments like uniforms or high performance athletic wear, fashion designers will consult end users to gain knowledge about specific demands or specifications. In this article we will report from a project where we have developed and used probes as an integrated part of the design process.

Audience Participation In A Dance-Club Context: Design Of A System For Collaborative Creation Of Visuals, Gerrit Kaiser, Gustav Ekblad, Linnéa Broling May 2007

Audience Participation In A Dance-Club Context: Design Of A System For Collaborative Creation Of Visuals, Gerrit Kaiser, Gustav Ekblad, Linnéa Broling

Nordes Conference Series

We investigated possibilities of improved interaction between artist and audience in the context of the dance club culture. Music club events are already highly interactive and collaborative experiences, so we focused on the role of media and amateur content creation. We identified a number of design challenges and constraints and developed a design concept accordingly. Our system allows for audience members to collaborate with a professional VJ (“video-” or “visual jockey”) in the selection and creation of live visuals that will be displayed alongside and fitting to the music on a screen at the dance-floor. The audience members interact with …

Domestication As Design Intervention., Sara Routarinne May 2007

Domestication As Design Intervention., Sara Routarinne

Nordes Conference Series

The article reports a study in which design prototypes where domesticated in different households in order to collect responses to them. These responses were then compared to the intentions that were articulated by the designers in a previous study, and embedded in the design of the design prototypes. The results indicate that some of the intentions were found whereas others were not. For example, the scenarios for use presented by the designers were not realized in actual use. Nevertheless, the more abstract intentions articulated for these prototypes were found. On the one hand, the results suggest that design prototypes act …

Participatory Design Of A Cross-Media Community For Societal Action: Lessons From Avatopia, Ylva Gislén, Jonas Löwgren, Ulf Myrestam May 2007

Participatory Design Of A Cross-Media Community For Societal Action: Lessons From Avatopia, Ylva Gislén, Jonas Löwgren, Ulf Myrestam

Nordes Conference Series

A cross-media platform was designed for a community of young teenagers oriented towards societal change, a task which motivated a deeply sociotechnical participatory design process. The final outcome involved an interactive web forum featuring creative and communicative collaborative tools in a 3D avatar environment, combined with a weekly show in national public-service television. An assessment of our work indicates that a participatory design process, where participants transition into the role of mentors and norm carriers upon deployment, can be a feasible way to support subcultural community building towards »difficult« topics, even though it entails considerable resource demands. This result is …

Waterfront Development With Web Mediation, Andrew Morrison, Synne Skjulstad, Birger Sevaldson May 2007

Waterfront Development With Web Mediation, Andrew Morrison, Synne Skjulstad, Birger Sevaldson

Nordes Conference Series

The term ‘unreal estate’ is coined to refer to online mediations of projected and planned urban developments, especially luxury domestic residency. A related website is studied as a mediation of co-ordinated artifacts and assembled persuasion. The site is also examined as a mediating artifact through which multiple representations are co-articulated. Taking the form of a visual essay, we argue that at tention is needed to mediation in design research.

Learning About Interactivity From Physical Toys, Eva Hornecker May 2007

Learning About Interactivity From Physical Toys, Eva Hornecker

Nordes Conference Series

Interaction Design is about designing interactions. We thus need to understand what makes up (good) ‘interactivity’. This article discusses experiences with an exercise that aims to sensitize students for interaction qualities and to make them familiar with central concepts on the nature of interactivity through analysis of physical toys. Reflecting on students’ insights and observations provides us with a deeper understanding of abstract notions and their complex interrelation, and with vivid examples, giving evidence of the exercise’s value.
