Increased Resistance Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 To Electron Beam Following Repetitive Irradiation At Sub-Lethal Doses And An Analysis Of Genes Of Escherichia Coli Resistance, Leah Levanduski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
One way that food processors in the United States control food-borne pathogens in a non-thermal manner is with the application of electron beam (e-beam) radiation. Increased resistance of Escherichia coli O157:H7 to various stressors such as pH, temperature, ionic strength, and antibiotics has been demonstrated; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine if the D10-value for E. coli O157:H7 ( E. coli) in ground beef increases due to repetitive exposure to e-beam at sub-lethal levels. Ground beef samples were inoculated with an ATCC strain of E. coli and incubated to approximately 109 CFU/g followed by e-beam processing. Survivors …
Biolayer Modeling And Optimization For The Sparrow Biosensor, Ke Feng
Biolayer Modeling And Optimization For The Sparrow Biosensor, Ke Feng
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Biosensor direct detection of molecular binding events is of significant interest in applications from molecular screening for cancer drug design to bioagent detection for homeland security and defense. The Stacked Planar Affinity Regulated Resonant Optical Waveguide (SPARROW) structure based on coupled waveguides was recently developed to achieve increased sensitivity within a fieldable biosensor device configuration. Under ideal operating conditions, modification of the effective propagation constant of the structure's sensing waveguide through selective attachment of specific targets to probes on the waveguide surface results in a change in the coupling characteristics of the guide over a specifically designed interaction length with …
Reflecting On Teaching Practices Using Digital Video Representation In Teacher Education, C Paul Newhouse, Jenny Lane, Claire Brown
Reflecting On Teaching Practices Using Digital Video Representation In Teacher Education, C Paul Newhouse, Jenny Lane, Claire Brown
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This paper reports on the perceptions of teacher education student of the value of using digital tools to analyse video-based information on the practice of teachers in classrooms. This strategy was employed to address a dilemma in providing sufficient exposure to real examples of good classroom teaching to link theory with practice. The use of video of teachers in action could augment their practicum experience in schools but this required efficient and effective access to appropriate video material. For this purpose, the use of digital tools in a system called LessonLab was successfully implemented in an introductory unit focussed on …
Parametric Design Of A Coal Mine Refuge Chamber, Michael A. Fasouletos
Parametric Design Of A Coal Mine Refuge Chamber, Michael A. Fasouletos
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In 2006 several coal mine tragedies led to safety legislation to provide post accident protection to coal miners. One of the key aspects of this legislation was providing refuge areas where miners could await rescue if they could not escape the mine. These refuge areas were to be designed to sustain life for four days, providing the miners with adequate oxygen, carbon dioxide scrubbing, food, water, and reasonable temperature control. A parametric study has been performed to provide further definition of the requirements in order to design an optimal portable refuge chamber with little or no electricity to enhance the …
Segmentation Of Images With Low-Contrast Edges, Matthew J. Madden
Segmentation Of Images With Low-Contrast Edges, Matthew J. Madden
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A vast amount of the current research in medical image analysis has aimed to develop improved techniques of image segmentation. Of the existing approaches, active contour methods have proven effective by incorporating edge or region information from the image into a level set formulation. However, complications arise in images containing regions of low-contrast due to noise, occlusions, or partial volume effects, which are often unavoidable in practical applications. Incorporating prior shape information into the segmentation framework provides a more accurate and robust solution by constraining the evolving contour to resemble a target shape. Two methods are presented to incorporate a …

Payment In Credit: Copyright Law And Subcultural Creativity, Rebecca Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Copyright lawyers talk and write a lot about the uncertainties of fair use and the deterrent effects of a clearance culture on publishers, teachers, filmmakers, and the like, but we know less about the choices people make about copyright on a daily basis, especially when they are not at work. Thus, this article examines one subcultural group that engages in a variety of practices, from pure copying and distribution of others' works to creation of new stories, art, and audiovisual works: the media-fan community. Fans justify their unauthorized derivative works as legitimate, no matter what formal copyright law says, with …
Idiopathic Epilepsy Of Childhood And Potassium Ion Channels, Alper I. Dai, Mohammad Wasay
Idiopathic Epilepsy Of Childhood And Potassium Ion Channels, Alper I. Dai, Mohammad Wasay
Department of Medicine
Potassium can affect the development of common seizure type and can be defined seizure susceptibility allele. The existence of inward-rectifying potassium (Kir) channels was first recognized half a century ago. The biophysical fingerprint of Kir channels is inward rectification in the current-voltage relationship , which limits potassium efflux at depolarizing membrane potentials. Kir channels are essential in the control of resting membrane potential, coupling of the metabolic cellular state with membrane excitability, and maintenance of potassium homeostasis. The critical interval contains several candidate genes, one of which, KCNJ10, exhibits a potentially important polymorphism with regard to fundamental aspects of seizure …

Delayed Angiogenesis And Vegf Production In Ccr2−/− Mice During Impaired Skeletal Muscle Regeneration, Oscar Ochoa, Dongxu Sun, Sara M. Reyna, Lindsay L. Waite, Joel E. Michalek, Linda M. Mcmanus, Paula K. Shireman
School of Medicine Publications
The regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels and angiogenic events during skeletal muscle regeneration remains largely unknown. This study examined angiogenesis, VEGF levels, and muscle regeneration after cardiotoxin (CT)-induced injury in mice lacking the CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2). Muscle regeneration was significantly decreased in CCR2−/− mice as was the early accumulation of macrophages after injury. In both mouse strains, tissue VEGF was similar at baseline (no injections) and significantly decreased at day 3 post-CT. Tissue VEGF in wild-type (WT) mice was restored within 7 days postinjury but remained significantly reduced in CCR2−/− mice until day 21. …
Land Use And Settlement Patterns In Michigan, 1763-1837, Ray De Bruler Jr.
Land Use And Settlement Patterns In Michigan, 1763-1837, Ray De Bruler Jr.
Dissertations
This dissertation examines various types of land use practices and settlement patterns from the end of the French era through statehood at Detroit, the Straits of Mackinac and the St. Joseph River Valley. In addition, this work describes a series of land ordinances, treaties, land office practices and acts and demonstrates how they shaped, or tried to shape, the ways people viewed the land and what they did with it. Michigan is an excellent case study for analyzing land use because it was the point of interaction among three distinct cultural and political groups, French, British and American, and each …

The Nature Of Japan's Official Development Assistance: Japan's Bilateral Oda And Its National Interests, 1981-2001, Seiki Muratani
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The concept of national interests has always been a key for studies of foreign policy. Japan's foreign aid, known as Official Development Assistance (ODA), is the single most significant political and diplomatic tool in the arena of Japanese foreign policy due to Japan's war-renouncing Article 9. However, the argument of the relationship between Japan's ODA policy and national interests is unclear. Although there are various qualitative arguments about the study of Japan's ODA, a systematic quantitative aid allocation study is rarely done. The central question of this thesis is what interests is Japan pursuing when it allocates its bilateral ODA, …

At present, there is poor accuracy in assessing cognitive and vegetative symptoms in depression using clinician or self-rated measures, suggesting the need for development of standardized tasks to assess these functions. The current study assessed the psychometric properties and diagnostic specificity of a brief neuropsychological screening battery designed to assess core signs of depression; psychomotor retardation, attention and executive functioning difficulties, and impaired emotion perception within an outpatient psychiatry setting. Three hundred eighty-four patients with mood disorders and 77 healthy volunteers participated. A large percentage of patients met diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive Disorder alone (49%) or with another comorbid …
Feasibility And Performance Analysis Of Sensor Modeling In Opnet, Niranjan Krishnamurthi
Feasibility And Performance Analysis Of Sensor Modeling In Opnet, Niranjan Krishnamurthi
Theses
The current surge in wireless sensor network research has led to the extensive use of network simulation software to simulate new and novel protocols. Analysis via simulation allows for the validation of protocols before being fully deployed in physical networks. Though superior in modeling RF signals and network operations, current wireless network simulation software lack fully functional sensor models that replicate a sensor’s interaction with the environment. Realistic and specific sensor models do exist, however very little has been incorporated into commonly used network simulators. It is questionable whether the typical approach of modeling sensed data as random processes offers …
Using Multispectral Sensor Wasp-Lite To Analyze Harmful Algal Blooms, Shari J. Mcnamara
Using Multispectral Sensor Wasp-Lite To Analyze Harmful Algal Blooms, Shari J. Mcnamara
Theses
Developing methods to monitor harmful algae is a current research “hot-topic.” One type of algae, the blue-green algae or Cyanobacteria, cause blooms that can lead to a health threat to humans and animals. This research will test the use of a cost effective and temporally efficient method using multispectral remote sensing system, WASPLITE, as a monitor of algal blooms. This airborne system will be optimized to the specific application of detecting Cyanobacteria on optically complex waters. Attempts have been made in the past using existing instruments, e.g., SeaWiFS and Landsat, to provide these data, but our solution can provide more …

Pparα Is A Key Regulator Of Hepatic Fgf21, Thomas Lundasen, Mary Hunt, Lisa-Marie Nilsson, Sabysashi Sanyal, Bo Angelin, Stefan Alexson, Mats Rudling
Articles
The metabolic regulator fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) has antidiabetic properties in animal models of diabetes and obesity. Using quantitative RT-PCR, we here show that the hepatic gene expression of FGF21 is regulated by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha). Fasting or treatment of mice with the PPARalpha agonist Wy-14,643 induced FGF21 mRNA by 10-fold and 8-fold, respectively. In contrast, FGF21 mRNA was low in PPARalpha deficient mice, and fasting or treatment with Wy-14,643 did not induce FGF21. Obese ob/ob mice, known to have increased PPARalpha levels, displayed 12-fold increased hepatic FGF21 mRNA levels. The potential importance of PPARalpha for …

Truth, Justice, And The American Dilemma, Robert Batey
San Diego Law Review
McCleskey v. Kemp is without doubt a memorable case. Professor David C. Baldus and his colleagues, Charles A. Pulaski and George Woodworth, had produced a detailed statistical study of the operation of the death penalty in Georgia showing, in the words of the Supreme Court, that "black defendants, such as McCleskey, who kill white victims have the greatest likelihood of receiving the death penalty." McCleskey used this study to challenge his capital sentence under both the Equal Protection and Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clauses. Like any statistical proof, the Baldus study had been challenged on methodological grounds. The Supreme Court …

On Their Own Ground: Strategies Of Resistance For Sunni Muslim Women, Theresa W. Tobin
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
Drawing from work in feminist moral philosophy, Tobin argues that the most common methodology used in practical ethics is a questionable methodology for addressing practical problems across diverse cultural contexts because the kind of impartiality it requires is neither feasible nor desirable. She then defends an alternative methodology for practical ethics in a global context and uses her proposed methodology to evaluate a problem that confronts many Sunni Muslim women around the world.

Cattle Corral Design- Learning By Doing, Stephen Boyles
Journal of Extension
Quality Assurance training for adults has placed little emphasis on human injury and carcass defects such as bruising. To reduce the incidence of human injury and carcass defects, people need to understand corral design and animal behavior. An interactive curricula was developed using fence panels big enough to be placed on a tabletop. Participants were able to use the panels to make corral designs. There have been 2,304 people who have participated in the corral design and animal handling programs offered by the author. Evaluations averaged a 9.2 ± 0.58 on a 10-point scale (1=terrible idea, 10=great idea).

Consumer Interest In Food Systems Topics: Implications For Educators, Jan Perez, Phil Howard
Journal of Extension
To assist consumers in understanding food system issues and to help them make informed choices, educators first need to engage their interests. To identify widely held consumer interests, focus groups informed a random sample survey conducted in the Central Coast region of California. Survey respondents reported the most interest in the safety and nutrition of their food, as well as in the external impacts of how their food was produced. Correlational analysis was used to explore characteristics and behaviors associated with these interests. The results offer strategies for public issues educators to target or structure food system related education initiatives.
