From Sandbox To Altar: What I Didn’T Know, Thought I Knew, And Discovered About Learning And Relationships, Cherilyn L. Gardner Aug 2007

From Sandbox To Altar: What I Didn’T Know, Thought I Knew, And Discovered About Learning And Relationships, Cherilyn L. Gardner

Masters Theses

In this theoretically-based thesis, I metacognitively explore the transactional relationship between critical inquiry and literacy development. Throughout the writing, I reveal my own learning in studying these concepts. Embedded in the discussion of research, readers will engage with my personal reflections, confessions, and applications of what I learned (and am still learning).

Through countless dialogues (academic and otherwise) and my study of literature and self, I found that literacy is much more than what it has been carved out to be by programs promising to raise standardized test scores. Additionally, by breaking the mold, I found that critical inquiry provides …

A Second Large Plasmid Encodes Conjugative Transfer And Antimicrobial Resistance In O119:H2 And Some Typical O111 Enteropathogenic Escherichia Coli Strains, Adaobi I. Nwaneshiudu, Tania Mucci, Derek J. Pickard, Iruka N. Okeke

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

A novel and functional conjugative transfer system identified in O119:H2 enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strain MB80 by subtractive hybridization is encoded on a large multidrug resistance plasmid, distinct from the well-described EPEC adherence factor (EAF) plasmid. Variants of the MB80 conjugative resistance plasmid were identified in other EPEC strains, including the prototypical O111:NM strain B171, from which the EAF plasmid has been sequenced. This separate large plasmid and the selective advantage that it confers in the antibiotic era have been overlooked because it comigrates with the virulence plasmid on conventional gels.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a staple food crop for millions of impoverished rural inhabitants of Andean South America where it has been cultivated for millennia. Interest in quinoa, due largely to its superior nutritional characteristics, is fuelling a growing export market and has led to an increased focus on genetic research and the development of quinoa breeding programmes throughout South America. The success of these breeding programmes will rely heavily on the development of core germplasm collections and germplasm conservation. We report the development of a set of fluorescence-tagged microsatellite molecular markers that can be used to characterize genetic …

Effects Of Calcium Availability On The Reproductive Output Of Insectivorous Bats, Christina M. Booher Aug 2007

Effects Of Calcium Availability On The Reproductive Output Of Insectivorous Bats, Christina M. Booher

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reproduction is a period of high calcium demand in vertebrates, and calcium deficiency can limit reproductive output in mammals. Insects are a poor calcium source, suggesting that insectivorous species are more likely to be calcium deficient. Pregnant big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) consume 10 times less calcium than they are estimated to require. To accommodate calcium demand during pregnancy, many mammals mobilize more calcium from the skeleton, and extensive bone loss has been observed in some bats during pregnancy. A conflict may arise between the female and developing embryo over allocation of limited calcium supplies, which could limit reproductive output …

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Stressors, Social Support, And Health Outcomes, Sharon Leder, Linda Nicholson Grinstead, Elisa Torres

Peer Reviewed Articles

The major purpose of this study was to identify predictors of grandparent caregiver health status. Additional purposes were to describe the physical and emotional health of grandparent caregivers and the perceived benefits of support group attendance. A convenience sample of 42 grandparents was recruited from support groups. Data were collected through telephone interviews. Grandparents who had higher parenting stress reported lower levels of physical, social, and mental health. Inverse correlations were present between life stress and mental health. Positive correlations were found between social support and physical health. No pattern emerged in a comparison of the health of care-giving grandparents …

Selection For Rapid Embryo Development Correlates With Embryo Exposure To Maternal Androgens Among Passerine Birds, Hubert Schwabl, Maria G. Palacios, Thomas E. Martin Aug 2007

Selection For Rapid Embryo Development Correlates With Embryo Exposure To Maternal Androgens Among Passerine Birds, Hubert Schwabl, Maria G. Palacios, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Greater offspring predation favors evolution of faster development among species. We hypothesized that greater offspring predation exerts selection on mothers to increase levels of anabolic androgens in egg yolks to achieve faster development. Here, we tested whether (1) concentrations of yolk androgens in passerine species were associated with offspring predation and (2) embryo and nestling development rates were associated with yolk androgen concentrations. We examined three androgens that increase in potency along the synthesis pathway: androstenedione (A(4)) to testosterone (T) to 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (5 alpha-DHT). Concentrations of none of these steroids were related to clutch size; only A, was allometrically …

Julius Caesar And The Rhine River: The Evolution Of A Border During The Gallic Wars, Todd Roman Aug 2007

Julius Caesar And The Rhine River: The Evolution Of A Border During The Gallic Wars, Todd Roman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis descusses the use of the Rhine River by Julius Caesar in his commentaries, De Bello Gallico, covering the Gallic Wars of approximately 58 to 52 B.C., to identify the peoples and territories separated by its current. This thesis addresses the issue of how Caesar understood this division of space, what criteria he employed to support his use of the river, and his protrayal of these matters within his account. It seeks to clarify the foundation of a major national border of western history in the context of its initial involvement in the context of the Roman Late …

Can Developing Women Create Primitive Art? And Other Questions Of Value, Meaning And Identity In The Circulation Of Janakpur Art, Coralynn V. Davis

Faculty Journal Articles

In this article, I examine the values and meanings that adhere to objects made by Maithil women at a development project in Janakpur, Nepal – objects collectors have called ‘Janakpur Art’. I seek to explain how and why changes in pictorial content in Janakpur Art – shifts that took place over a period of five or six years in the 1990s – occurred, and what such a change might indicate about the link between Maithil women’s lives, development, and tourism. As I will demonstrate, part of the appeal for consumers of Janakpur Art has been that it is produced at …

Exploring And Explaining Weight Changes In First Semester Freshmen College Students: Relationship To Enrollment In A Wellness Course And Other Variables Using A Mixed Method Design, Janice L. Jewett

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to examine and explain causes of body weight changes in first-semester freshmen. A mixed method design was used to conduct an experimental component, search for statistical relationships among variables, and explore and further explain the findings related to body weight changes.

The quantitative results revealed that there was no significant difference in change in body weight between the experimental and control group. Major findings in the quantitative analysis were that freshman males are gaining more weight than freshman females during their first semester in college. Drinking contributes to this weight gain. In addition, feeling …

Identification Of Psychological Stressors For Long Duration Space Missions: Psychological Stressors Among Five Astronauts And Cosmonauts, Melinda S. Marsh Aug 2007

Identification Of Psychological Stressors For Long Duration Space Missions: Psychological Stressors Among Five Astronauts And Cosmonauts, Melinda S. Marsh

Theses and Dissertations

As humans continue to experience space missions of longer and longer duration, more and more high intensity stressors are going to be experienced. Although physiological stressors have been studied, there have been few studies on the psychological stressors. Those that are present primarily focused on the polar environment as a space analogue. In order to answer the question of how stressors may affect future astronauts and cosmonauts, the evolutoinary reasons behind stress must be considered not only the type and intensity of the stressors.

Five astronauts and cosmonauts representing three space agencies were surveyed regarding their experiences with ten types …

A Pre-Crash Simulator To Evaluate Vehicle Collision Prediction Algorithms, Dana Desrosiers, Charles Birdsong, Peter Schuster Aug 2007

A Pre-Crash Simulator To Evaluate Vehicle Collision Prediction Algorithms, Dana Desrosiers, Charles Birdsong, Peter Schuster

Mechanical Engineering

This paper describes a software simulator for pre-crash collision predictions. The simulator is a surrogate test bed for evaluating the performance of proposed pre-crash algorithms. It reads data from a file, transfers distance and angular position of a target to a test algorithm, and then records the algorithm’s predictions. To illustrate the simulator functionality, a simplified test algorithm is also described. This algorithm predicts collision risks based on assumptions about the size and acceleration of a target object, and the turning and braking limits of the host vehicle. The test algorithm is shown to be effective for cases where both …

An Eco-Philosophical Ecofeminist Critique Of Victimology: Examining The Anthropocentric And Speciesist Borders And Boundaries Of Victimology, Angela K. Simon Aug 2007

An Eco-Philosophical Ecofeminist Critique Of Victimology: Examining The Anthropocentric And Speciesist Borders And Boundaries Of Victimology, Angela K. Simon

Masters Theses

This work is a critique of the anthropocentric and speciesist borders and boundaries of victimology. Essentially I challenge victimology for failing to incorporate the victimizations of non-human animals and the environment, and instead focusing narrowly on only specific forms of human victimization. I do this by examining the history of victimology and exploring how its boundaries became what they are today. Focusing on the role criminology has had in the general development of victimology. I then go on to juxtapose the limited presence of animals and the environment within criminology with their relative absence in victimology. In conjunction with this …

A Path To Resolution Regarding The Show Lamb Tail Docking Controversy, Jeff Goodwin, Tim Murphy, Ross Jacobson, Jim Jenson Aug 2007

A Path To Resolution Regarding The Show Lamb Tail Docking Controversy, Jeff Goodwin, Tim Murphy, Ross Jacobson, Jim Jenson

Journal of Extension

Short dock length in show lambs increases health risks and creates animal welfare concerns. The study reported here was conducted to 1) describe a population of lambs that were docked at the distal end of the caudal fold in terms of a linear measurement, and 2) determine the changes in tail length between docking, weaning, and market. A total of 782 lambs docked at the distal end of the caudal fold, comprised the population of lambs in the study. The results provide descriptive statistics to help guide industry leaders and Extension professionals concerned with docking standards at shows and sales.

A Lateral Symmetry Approach To Percentage-Based Hybrid Pattern (Php) Training, Sheng-Uei Guan, Kiruthika Ramanathan Aug 2007

A Lateral Symmetry Approach To Percentage-Based Hybrid Pattern (Php) Training, Sheng-Uei Guan, Kiruthika Ramanathan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we investigate the application of lateral symmetry to supervised learning using genetic algorithms. The hypothesis is motivated by the presence of symmetry in the animal brain and by research results showing approximately equal task division between the two hemispheres of the brain. In this paper, each training pattern is considered a task. By applying the concept of lateral symmetry, we use global training (a typically right brained activity) to learn half the tasks and local training (a left brained activity) to learn the rest of the tasks. We verified the use of this Percentage-based Pattern (PHP) training …

Going Batty: Response Of Foraging Glossophagine Bats To Auditorily Perceived Predator Presence, August 2007, Hannah Kim Frank Aug 2007

Going Batty: Response Of Foraging Glossophagine Bats To Auditorily Perceived Predator Presence, August 2007, Hannah Kim Frank

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Predator presence is known to alter the foraging behavior of many species leading to decreased resource acquisition and lowered reproductive rate (Werner 1994). Previous studies have examined the effect of predator presence on the emergence of roosting bats and the effect of predator models on foraging bats (Baxter et al. 2006). Only one study, however, has examined the importance of auditory cues in alerting foraging bats to the presence of predators (in this case, owls; Baxter et al. 2006). The study concluded that bats not only avoid perceived owls but also the call of a diurnal woodpecker, leading the authors …

A Post-Marxist Perspective On Chuck Palahniuk’S Early Novels And The Four Plays Of Incarcerated, Ron Riekki Aug 2007

A Post-Marxist Perspective On Chuck Palahniuk’S Early Novels And The Four Plays Of Incarcerated, Ron Riekki

Dissertations

Incarcerated: a collection of four plays includes the plays Home Schooling, Good Behavior, 2 Mics, and All Saints' Day. Incarcerated explores Foucault's carceral networking and Althusser's Ideological and Repressive State Apparatuses as exemplified in characters faced with such cataclysmic events as the Holocaust (Home Schooling and All Saints' Day) and the degradation/slavery of the American prison system (Good Behavior and 2 Mics). In this RCG-centered working class playwriting, we see how performativity is in inherent in carceral sociology, where each character in all four plays has to take masks and costumes and roles in order to …

The Effect Of Chloramphenicol On Bb88 Murine Erythroleukemia Cells, Peter K. W. Harris Aug 2007

The Effect Of Chloramphenicol On Bb88 Murine Erythroleukemia Cells, Peter K. W. Harris

Dissertations

DNA microarrays can be used to measure genome-wide transcript levels. These measurements may be useful in understanding cellular changes induced by a chemical agent. In this study, Affymetrix microarray technology has been used to study the effects of chloramphenicol, an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial and mitochondrial protein synthesis, on the transcription profile in mammalian cells. Transcript levels in BB88 murine erythroleukemia cells treated with 50 micromolar ( mu M) chloramphenicol, a concentration shown to inhibit BB88 proliferation, are measured. Using total RNA from treated cells, biotin-labeled cRNA was prepared and hybridized to Affymetrix U74Av2 microarrays. From these hybridizations, expression levels …

Public Administration Theory And Views Of The Human Person, Gerald L. Zandstra Aug 2007

Public Administration Theory And Views Of The Human Person, Gerald L. Zandstra

Dissertations

Public administrative theory, despite its reach into American life, lacks broad agreement about its field of inquiry, its underlying presuppositions, and its purpose. Theorists such as Herbert Storing, Stephen Bailey, Richard Stillman, David Hart, Vincent Ostrom, William Dunn, Bahman Fozouni, Mark Rutgers, Michael Harmon and others have observed and lamented these shortcomings. Without well-developed theory, the objectives of public administration are a moving target.

This project does not attempt to resolve this deficiency. Instead, it is intended to address a primary question pertaining to public administration's core principles: what is the nature of the human person? The line of argumentation …

Mobile Phone Induced Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Surayie H. Al-Dousary Aug 2007

Mobile Phone Induced Sensorineural Hearing Loss, Surayie H. Al-Dousary

Saudi Medical Journal

The increased use of mobile phones worldwide has focused interest on the biological effects and possible health outcomes of exposure to radiofrequency fields from mobile phones, and their base stations. Various reports suggest that mobile phone use can cause health problems like fatigue, headache, dizziness, tension, and sleep disturbances; however, only limited research data is available in medical literature regarding interaction between electromagnetic fields emitted by mobile phones and auditory function; and the possible impact on hearing. We report a case of sensorineural hearing loss due to Global System for Mobile Communications mobile phone use, in a 42-year-old male.

Bullshitting The People: The Criminal Procedure Implications Of A Scatalogical Term, Andrew E. Taslitz Aug 2007

Bullshitting The People: The Criminal Procedure Implications Of A Scatalogical Term, Andrew E. Taslitz

School of Law Faculty Publications

When, if ever, is it appropriate for the police to lie to members of the American People about their constitutional rights, mislead them about the rights' content, fail to mention them at all, or discourage their exercise? This paper seeks to answer that question by drawing on the philosophical literature on the nature and social value (or harm) of bullshit and on psychological research relevant to the same concept to craft what is ultimate a political position on the question.

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Bis(Diazasilaphosphetidine)Amine, P, N-2-Phosphinoaminopyridine And Phosphaacetylferrocenyl Ligands, And Some Of Their Metal Complexes, Leonard E. Anagho Aug 2007

Syntheses And Characterizations Of Bis(Diazasilaphosphetidine)Amine, P, N-2-Phosphinoaminopyridine And Phosphaacetylferrocenyl Ligands, And Some Of Their Metal Complexes, Leonard E. Anagho

Theses and Dissertations

Symmetric bis(diazasilaphosphetidine)amine chelating ligands of the general formula {Me2Si(p-Nt-Bu)P}2N(Ar) where Ar = C6H4(/?-OMe), C6H4(/7-Me) and C6F5, and asymmetric bis(phosphine)amine ligands have been synthesized by treatment of chlorophosphines or chlorophosphite with the corresponding lithium amides. The asymmetric ligand Me2Si(p-Nt-Bu)2P(=NPh)PPh2 served either as a P,P or a P,N chelate depending on the metal ion and the reaction conditions employed. R./V-2-phosphinoaminopyridine ligands such as [{2-(/-Bu2PNH)C5NH4}LiCl]*C4HgO and [{2-(Me2Si(p-Nf-Bu)2PNH)C5NH4}LiCl]*C4HgO with different substituents at phosphorus have also been synthesized. Numerous molybdenumtetracarbonyl, nickel and palladium complexes of these ligands have been synthesized. The synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, melting point, NMR and 1R spectroscopic …
