Volumetric Visualization Of Nexrad Level Ii Doppler Weather Data From Multiple Sites, Yi Ru Dec 2007

Volumetric Visualization Of Nexrad Level Ii Doppler Weather Data From Multiple Sites, Yi Ru

Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses

Weather visualization is critical for operational forecasters and weather researchers to analyze, monitor, and predict severe weather events such as storms, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Usually measured weather datasets such as NEXRAD Level II radar data contain some errors and have temporal aliasing issues, so that the raw data cannot represent the true meteorological patterns. Existing weather visualization packages usually ignore these problems, thus they fail to unveil some detailed information and cannot meet the needs of professional meteorologists. Most displays generated by those packages are limited to 2D images, 3D point clouds, or iso-surfaces. Those displays are not able to …

Beneficial Fungal Interactions Resulting In Accelerated Germination Of Astragalus Utahensis, A Hard-Seeded Legume, Sean D. Eldredge Dec 2007

Beneficial Fungal Interactions Resulting In Accelerated Germination Of Astragalus Utahensis, A Hard-Seeded Legume, Sean D. Eldredge

Theses and Dissertations

Seed germination is pivotal in the life cycle of native plants in a restorative context because initiation of the metabolic processes critical to establishment is key to survival in such a competitive environment. Dormancy characteristics of some native plants including the subject species, Astragalus utahensis, have evolved mechanisms to control germination in order to maintain a seed bank and ensure germination at the right time under optimal conditions. In vitro germination studies confirm beneficial interactions between Alternaria and Aspergillus fungi and Astragalus utahensis seed. Inoculated seed trials (1.0 x 106 spores/mL) exhibited a highly significant difference in percent germination between …

Using Scissors To Quantify Hardness Of Insects: Do Bats Select For Size Or Hardness?, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen Dec 2007

Using Scissors To Quantify Hardness Of Insects: Do Bats Select For Size Or Hardness?, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Scissors are used to determine the hardness of fresh insects of different size and taxa. Our results indicate a strong relationship between the size of an insect and its hardness, which can be expressed as log(Fmax) = 0.65 × log(V) + α. Fmax is the maximal force needed to cut the insect and is our measure of insect hardness. V is the volume of the insect and α is a constant that can be derived for different insect taxa. The value of 0.65 was found as an average of beetle and moth samples, and this …

A Comparison And Contrast Of The History Of Christianity As It Developed In Cappadocia And Armenia During The First Five Centuries Ad, Judy Henzel Dec 2007

A Comparison And Contrast Of The History Of Christianity As It Developed In Cappadocia And Armenia During The First Five Centuries Ad, Judy Henzel

All Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine key political, cultural or environmental factors which affected the rise and development of Christianity in two specific regions of eastern Anatolia during the first to fifth centuries AD. Hagiography and chronicle often portray the progress of Christianity as deterministic and providential. However, unique cultural and political elements proved very influential in shaping the success and forms of Christianity in Cappadocia and Armenia, particularly in the fourth and fifth centuries AD.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Digital libraries and Digitisation play an important role in preserving and disseminating knowledge in art and culture, education, science and technology, literature and humanities, media and entertainment, cultural heritage, and history. In India, a substantial number of libraries and information centres have initiated digital library activities. Indian society has created and preserved the resources of traditional and cultural heritage in various forms; however, thousands of ancient books and manuscriptsl remain in perishable palm leaves and urgently need digitization. This article describes some of the digital libraries and institutional repositories of India.

Lexical Conflation And Edible Iconicity: Two Sources Of Ambiguity In American Vernacular Health Terminology, Laurel Smith Stvan Dec 2007

Lexical Conflation And Edible Iconicity: Two Sources Of Ambiguity In American Vernacular Health Terminology, Laurel Smith Stvan

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Examination of lexical items in naturally occurring vernacular prose shows patterns of ambiguities in how Americans discuss health issues. Samples from the Freiburg–Brown corpus of American English and varied registers of popular health writing found online reveal two principles of naming beliefs that crosscut the uses of many ambiguous terms: the semantic principle of ‘lexical conflation’ and the semiotic principle of ‘edible iconicity’. Both are shown to reflect sources of nutritional conceptualizations. Lexical conflation is illustrated by uses of fat, cholesterol, sugar, oil, and germ, with modifiers shown to help disambiguate terms. Edible iconicity, where meaning is attached to the …

Security Issues Within Virtual Worlds Such As Second Life, Chia Yao Lee, Matthew Warren

Australian Information Security Management Conference

The advancement in Internet and bandwidth has resulted in a number of new applications to be developed. An area of advancement has been in the development of virtual worlds, where people can interact together via virtual characters. Virtual World systems have been so complex that virtual lives can be lived, including all aspect of life such as education, commerce, social activities etc. Not surprisingly, the problems that exist in the real world such as theft, fraud, vandalism and terrorism, also exist in the virtual worlds. The more developed these virtual worlds become the greater the breaches of security will be …

How Safe Is Azeroth, Or, Are Mmorpgs A Security Risk?, An Hilven, Andrew Woodward

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs) are at a basic level a networked application. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft is currently the largest example of such a type of application, with over nine million subscribers at last count. Whilst the idea of researching a game for network security may sound trivial, nine million potential backdoors into home and business computers is not. The ports used by the game, as well as authentication methods and client update programs were examined using packet analysis software. No obvious vulnerabilities were discovered as a result of this analysis. In addition to this analysis, an …

It's Alive! The Gothic (Dis)Embodiment Of The Logic Of Networks, Anna Katharine Bennion Dec 2007

It's Alive! The Gothic (Dis)Embodiment Of The Logic Of Networks, Anna Katharine Bennion

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis draws connections between today's network society and the workings of gothic literature in the late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century. Just as our society is formed and affected by the flow of information, the eighteenth-century culture of sensibility was formed by the merging and flow of scientific "technology" (or new scientific discoveries) and societal norms and rules. Gothic literature was born out of this science-society network, and in many ways embodies the ruptures implicit in it. Although gothic literature is not a network in the same sense as informationalism and the culture of sensibility are, gothic literature works according …

The Role Of Secreted Phosphoprotein-24 In Osteoblast Differentiation And Matrix Mineralization, Samuel Ramage Dec 2007

The Role Of Secreted Phosphoprotein-24 In Osteoblast Differentiation And Matrix Mineralization, Samuel Ramage

Theses and Dissertations

Secreted Phosphoprotein-24 (Spp24) was initially isolated and characterized as a component of bovine cortical bone matrix. Subsequent characterization has shown it is multiply phosphorylated and homologous to cystatin and TGF-β receptor type II. Spp24 is a minor component of the serum fetuin mineral complex that binds calcium-phosphate minerals and prevents their deposition. The TGF-β receptor homology domain binds BMP-2 weakly in vitro and enhances BMP-2’s osteogenic effects in vivo. The ability of Spp24 to affect BMP activity suggests an important role for Spp24 as a native, bioactive componentof bone that regulates bone development.

Spp24 was highly up-regulated in rat cortical …

Niche Separation Along Environmental Gradients As A Mechanism To Promote The Coexistence Of Native And Invasive Species, Edmund R. Priddis Dec 2007

Niche Separation Along Environmental Gradients As A Mechanism To Promote The Coexistence Of Native And Invasive Species, Edmund R. Priddis

Theses and Dissertations

Niche separation may be the key to promoting the long-term coexistence of introduced and native species. Physical alterations to the environment (habitat manipulation) or re-introducing native species to former habitats can exploit the maladapted traits of introduced species to create a refuge for native species. No two species have identical niches because evolutionary constraints differ between species with different evolutionary histories. Our objectives were to determine if cold temperatures could promote coexistence between native least chub and introduced western mosquitofish. We used individual scale and population scale experiments to test four hypotheses: 1) colder temperatures would reduce the aggressive behavior …

Averting Catastrophic Climate Change: Confronting Wealth, V Hurth, P Wells Dec 2007

Averting Catastrophic Climate Change: Confronting Wealth, V Hurth, P Wells

Plymouth Business School

In the context of potential catastrophic climate change, it is vital that fundamental drivers of carbon dioxide emissions are pinpointed and addressed. One of the key drivers of these emissions is shown to be increased economic wealth. This paper highlights that links between wealth and carbon dioxide must be addressed, and that although highly debated, the links are not well considered, especially at the detailed level of what drives consumption preferences of the global wealthy. In the context of increasing wealth concentration and poverty gaps, this subject is central to issues of social justice as well as environmental integrity. © …

A Costly Standoff: The Hart And Miller Islands Controversy, Raymond K. Shin Dec 2007

A Costly Standoff: The Hart And Miller Islands Controversy, Raymond K. Shin

Legal History Publications

In the 1970s, the state of Maryland planned to construct a diked disposal area on Hart and Miller Islands to contain contaminated spoil from dredging projects in the Chesapeake Bay. Environmental groups and nearby residents filed a lawsuit in opposition, relying on the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 along with other statutes and regulations. Although the courts held in favor of the defendants, the litigation caused years of delay and millions of dollars in added costs for the state. The Hart-Miller Island controversy demonstrates the importance of avoiding lawsuits against large-scale public works projects if at all possible, even …
