Pennsylvanians' Knowledge Of Agriculture, Fern K. Willits, A. E. Luloff, Jennifer S. James Aug 2007

Pennsylvanians' Knowledge Of Agriculture, Fern K. Willits, A. E. Luloff, Jennifer S. James

Agribusiness

In 2005, researchers at Pennsylvania State University surveyed 1,521 Pennsylvanians in 65 counties to determine their knowledge of and perceptions about agriculture in the state. The study looked to: assess the level of agricultural knowledge of Pennsylvanians; ascertain how personal characteristics and frequency of rural visitation related to agricultural knowledge and to the perceptions of citizens about various agricultural issues; explore the relationship of agricultural knowledge to public perceptions of selected agricultural issues; and suggest how information on Pennsylvanians’ knowledge, experiences, and perceptions of agriculture are relevant to policy makers. The study results showed that, overall, most participants believed they …

The Use Of 18f-Fluoride And 18f-Fdg Pet Scans To Assess Fracture Healing In A Rat Femur Model, Jay R. Lieberman Aug 2007

The Use Of 18f-Fluoride And 18f-Fdg Pet Scans To Assess Fracture Healing In A Rat Femur Model, Jay R. Lieberman

UCHC Articles - Research

Currently available diagnostic techniques can be unreliable in the diagnosis of
delayed fracture healing in certain clinical situations, which can lead to increased complication rates and costs to the health care system. This study sought to determine the utility of positron emission tomography (PET) scanning with 18F-fluoride ion, which localizes in regions of high osteoblastic activity, and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), an indicator of cellular glucose metabolism, in assessing bone healing in a rat femur fracture model.

Molecular Determinants Of Mg2+ And Ca2+ Permeability And Ph Sensitivity In Trpm6 And Trpm7*S, Mingjiang Li, Jianyang Du, Jianmin Jiang, William J. Ratzan, Li-Ting Su, Loren W. Runnels, Lixia Yue Aug 2007

Molecular Determinants Of Mg2+ And Ca2+ Permeability And Ph Sensitivity In Trpm6 And Trpm7*S, Mingjiang Li, Jianyang Du, Jianmin Jiang, William J. Ratzan, Li-Ting Su, Loren W. Runnels, Lixia Yue

UCHC Articles - Research

The channel kinases TRPM6 and TRPM7 have recently been discovered to play important roles in Mg2+ and Ca2+ homeostasis, which is critical to both human health and cell viability. However, the molecular basis underlying these channels’ unique Mg2+ and Ca2+ permeability and pH sensitivity remains unknown. Here we have created a series of amino acid substitutions in the putative pore of TRPM7 to evaluate the origin of the permeability of the channel and its regulation by pH. Two mutants of TRPM7, E1047Q and E1052Q, produced dramatic changes in channel properties. The I–V relations of E1052Q and …

Heat Stress, Fairs, And Achievement Days: Animal Considerations, Russ Daly Aug 2007

Heat Stress, Fairs, And Achievement Days: Animal Considerations, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Animals shown at achievement days and fairs may be at increased risk for heat stress compared to their counterparts left at home. Transporting, showing, and handling in hot and humid weather may predispose animals to heat stress and possibly serious health consequences. With the exception of horses, animals shown at fairs and achievement days (cattle, dogs and cats, pigs, poultry, rabbits, sheep and goats) do not perspire and cannot regulate body temperature that way. If conditions are hot and humid, their body temperatures will peak in late afternoon and early evening hours. The most important way to reduce the risk …

The Effect Of Dispersal Ability In Winter And Summer Stoneflies On Their Genetic Differentiation, Alison L. Yasick, Robert A. Krebs, Julie A. Wolin Aug 2007

The Effect Of Dispersal Ability In Winter And Summer Stoneflies On Their Genetic Differentiation, Alison L. Yasick, Robert A. Krebs, Julie A. Wolin

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

1. Plecopteran species disperse less than most other aquatic insects. Within stoneflies, members of different families vary in the degree of wing morphology and season of adult emergence.

2.  Dispersal limitations were tested to determine if there were increased differences among the nearby, Chagrin and Grand River populations in north-eastern Ohio, by comparing genetic variation within the 16s rRNA region of mitochondrial DNA in two stoneflies. Allocapnia recta emerges in winter and often has rudimentary wings, and Leuctra tenuis emerges in summer with fully developed wings.

3. There was significant genetic variability between the samples of A. recta from two …

Effect Of Varying Concentrations Of Dietary Crude Protein And Metabolizable Energy On Laying Performance Of Pearl Grey Guinea Fowl Hens, Samuel N. Nahashon, Nathaniel Adefope, Abravi Amenyenu, D. Wright

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

This study was conducted to evaluate optimum dietary concentrations of ME and CP for egg production performance of the Pearl Gray guinea fowl laying hens. In a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, 360 Pearl Gray guinea fowl replacement pullets (22 wk of age) were randomly assigned to experimental diets with 2,800 and 2,900 kcal of ME/kg of diet, each containing 14, 16, and 18% CP, respectively. Each dietary treatment was replicated 4 times, and feed and water were provided ad libitum. Experimental birds were raised in laying cages and received 16 h of light throughout the study period. The birds …

HPD Articles

Reduced uterine perfusion initiated in late gestation in the rat results in intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and development of hypertension by 4 wk of age. We hypothesize that the renin angiotensin system (RAS), a regulatory system important in the long-term control of blood pressure, may be programmed by placental insufficiency and may contribute to the etiology of IUGR hypertension. We previously reported that RAS blockade abolished hypertension in adult IUGR offspring; however, the mechanisms responsible for the early phase of hypertension are unresolved. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine RAS involvement in early programmed hypertension and to …

An Ethical Analysis Of The 3 Rs, Lisa Houde, Claude Dumas Aug 2007

An Ethical Analysis Of The 3 Rs, Lisa Houde, Claude Dumas

Between the Species

Even though the 3Rs (i.e., Replacement, Reduction, Refinement) are widely accepted as ethical standards when evaluating research projects using animals as experimental subjects, the ethical status of the 3Rs still remains to be clarified. The 3Rs were not derived from any ethical theory, but they represented an attempt to increase humanity to animal experimentation and at the same time to improve validity of scientific data (Russell & Burch, 1959). The aim of the present article was to provide an ethical analysis of the 3Rs through Engelhardt's bioethics theory (1998). The analysis revealed the 3Rs fitted to some extent Engelhardt ethical …

Nonhuman Chimeras With Human Brain Cells, Eric Sotnak Aug 2007

Nonhuman Chimeras With Human Brain Cells, Eric Sotnak

Between the Species

Many people find the notion of blending humans and nonhumans together to create animals whose brains are composed entirely of human brain cells disturbing. I argue that these moral qualms lack adequate justification. I consider a number of reasons for objecting to the creation of such chimeras and argue that none of these reasons withstand scrutiny. I argue that the only plausible objections to these chimeras would require that they possess morally significant properties that would be lacked by similar, non-chimeric animals, but that there is no good reason to think this would be the case.

Mind-Matter For Animals Matters: Science And The Denial Of Animal Consciousness, Estiva Reus, David Olivier

Between the Species

Animal people are usually confident that Cartesianism is something of the past and that modern science clearly establishes that animals are sentient beings. But actually the scientific status of sentience is anything but firmly established. Not only is the subjective point of view absent from current science; it is precluded by construction from our fundamental realms of knowledge. Physics — the mother-science once we reject Cartesian dualism — is currently unable to include sentience in its account of the world. A large part of the philosophy of mind describes a mindless mind, from which subjectivity — feeling, qualia — has …

The Relationship Between Disperal Ability And Geographic Range Size, Sarah E. Lester, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Steven D. Gaines, Brian P. Kinlan Aug 2007

The Relationship Between Disperal Ability And Geographic Range Size, Sarah E. Lester, Benjamin I. Ruttenberg, Steven D. Gaines, Brian P. Kinlan

Biological Sciences

There are a variety of proposed evolutionary and ecological explanations for why some species have more extensive geographical ranges than others. One of the most common explanations is variation in species’ dispersal ability. However, the purported relationship between dispersal distance and range size has been subjected to few theoretical investigations, and empirical tests reach conflicting conclusions. We attempt to reconcile the equivocal results of previous studies by reviewing and synthesizing quantitative dispersal data, examining the relationship between average dispersal ability and range size for different spatial scales, regions and taxonomic groups. We use extensive data from marine taxa whose average …
