The Space Between : Transracial Adoptee's Racial Identity And The Role Parents Play In Identity Development, Kristen Denise Mccully
The Space Between : Transracial Adoptee's Racial Identity And The Role Parents Play In Identity Development, Kristen Denise Mccully
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored how transracial adoptees perceive their racial identity and the role that parents play in identity development. In particular, people who participated in this study were asked to reflect on the messages they received about their racial/ethnic identity and how racism may have played into these messages. Interviews were conducted with 12 transracial adoptees who were over the age of 18 at the time of the study. Participants were asked questions about the diversity of the neighborhoods in which they grew up; how their parents recognized their race/ethnicity; how their parents contributed to their racial identity development; how …
Women's Attitudes And Perceptions About Sexual Fantasy And How It Relates To Sexual Satisfaction In A Committed Relationship, Jillian Marie Weis
Women's Attitudes And Perceptions About Sexual Fantasy And How It Relates To Sexual Satisfaction In A Committed Relationship, Jillian Marie Weis
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This quantitative study was completed to explore how women's attitudes and perceptions regarding sexual fantasy are related to sexual satisfaction in a committed relationship. Previous research on sexual fantasy focused on frequency of sexual fantasy, gender differences regarding themes of sexual fantasy, level of guilt associated with sexual fantasy, and the acceptance of pornography as sexual fantasy. The survey was presented on the Internet based website, Survey Monkey. Over the course of 30 days, 129 women responded to the survey. The survey included fourteen items that ranged from demographic questions to questions regarding attitudes towards fantasy, and open-ended questions. The …
Eastern European Adoption : A Theoretical Study Of Attachment Disorder Through A Self Psychology Lens, Andrea Leadbetter Larkin
Eastern European Adoption : A Theoretical Study Of Attachment Disorder Through A Self Psychology Lens, Andrea Leadbetter Larkin
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical research paper focuses on both attachment theory and self psychology to examine the consequences institutions have on infant mental health. The research specifically addresses Eastern European institution infants that develop reactive attachment disorder. The research discusses the current treatment solutions for reactive attachment disorder using the two aforementioned theoretical lenses. Institution infants are an important target for research because the pathogenic care provided by institutions inherently disrupts the infants early attachment needs. The findings of this study were as follows: 1) It would benefit potential adoptive parent to participate in educational training about reactive attachment disorder. 2) Adoptees …
Factors Affecting Help-Seeking Behaviors For Mental Health Services Among Filipino Americans, Melissa Dimalanta Camorongan
Factors Affecting Help-Seeking Behaviors For Mental Health Services Among Filipino Americans, Melissa Dimalanta Camorongan
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored help-seeking behaviors for mental health services among Filipino Americans. Filipinos are the second largest Asian American population in the United States and have been identified as one of the high-risk Asian American groups for mental disorders. Yet as a population they remain understudied and underserved. Existing studies are quantitative and have been conducted on college age students that are transitioning to adulthood. We know little about the help-seeking behavior for mental health services among Filipino Americans in adulthood and in their own voice. This study involved face-to-face interviews with a sample of 12 persons of Filipino …

Primary Caregiving Fathers : I Was An Interloper In A Woman's World, Meghan L. Cavanaugh
Primary Caregiving Fathers : I Was An Interloper In A Woman's World, Meghan L. Cavanaugh
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study sought to ascertain how fathers who are primary caregivers understand their roles as fathers and caregivers. This qualitative, exploratory study aimed to expand the body of knowledge on primary caregiving fathers, which has, to date, largely focused on outcomes-based research. Heterosexual, married men with children under five years of age, who had been primary caregivers for at least six months, were recruited from Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York. Twelve primary caregiving fathers participated in this study. Questions focused on such topics as: 1) the decision-making process; 2) what the participants understood their roles as fathers and primary …

Technical Note: Calculation Of Standard Errors Of Estimates Of Genetic Parameters With The Multiple-Trait Derivative-Free Restricted Maximal Likelihood Programs, Stephen D. Kachman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Technical Note: Calculation Of Standard Errors Of Estimates Of Genetic Parameters With The Multiple-Trait Derivative-Free Restricted Maximal Likelihood Programs, Stephen D. Kachman, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
The multiple-trait derivative-free REML set of programs was written to handle partially missing data for multiple-trait analyses as well as single- trait models. Standard errors of genetic parameters were reported for univariate models and for multiple-trait analyses only when all traits were measured on animals with records. In addition to estimating (co)variance components for multiple-trait models with partially missing data, this paper shows how the multiple-trait derivative-free REML set of programs can also estimate SE by augmenting the data file when not all animals have all traits measured. Although the standard practice has been to eliminate records with partially missing …

Chemistry Faculty Publications
Background
Metastasis is a process by which tumors spread from primary organs to other sites in the body and is the major cause of death for cancer patients. The ovarian cancer G protein–coupled receptor 1 (OGR1) gene has been shown to be expressed at lower levels in metastatic compared with primary prostate cancer tissues.
Methods
We used an orthotopic mouse metastasis model, in which we injected PC3 metastatic human prostate cancer cells stably transfected with empty vector (vector-PC3) or OGR1-expressing vector (OGR1-PC3) into the prostate lobes of athymic or NOD/SCID mice (n = 3–8 mice per group). Migration of PC3 …

2007 Engr333/Biol354 Project Assignment, Matthew K. Heun
ENGR 333
The Fall 2007 semester ENGR333 project involved a collaboration with students in BIOL354, taught by my colleague Dave Warners. We asked our students “What would it take to make Calvin College carbon neutral?”
This project resulted in the first-ever carbon dioxide emissions and sequestration assessment of Calvin College, attached below.
The student presenters animated the pie charts, and an audible gasp filled the hall when the imbalance between carbon emissions and carbon sequestration became clear.
The students also studied potential routes to carbon neutrality, one of which was a green revolving fund.
This class project resulted in a co-authored publication …
Hormones In The Field: Evolutionary Endocrinology Of Juvenile Hormone And Ecdysteroids In Field Populations Of The Wing-Dimorphic Cricket Gryllus Firmus, Anthony J. Zera, Zangwu Zhao, Katherine Kaliseck
Anthony Zera Publications
Virtually no published information exists on insect endocrine traits in natural populations, which limits our understanding of endocrine microevolution. We characterized the hemolymph titers of juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysteroids (ECDs), two key insect hormones, in field-collected short-winged, flightless (SW) and long-winged, flight-capable (LW(f)) morphs of the cricket Gryllus firmus. The JH titer exhibited a dramatic circadian rhythm in the LW(f) morph but was temporally constant in the flightless SW morph. This pattern was consistent in each of three years; in young, middle-aged, and older G. firmus; and in three other cricket species. The ECD titer was considerably …
