Dartmouth Scholarship

The eukaryotic nicotinamide riboside kinase (Nrk) pathway, which is induced in response to nerve damage and promotes replicative life span in yeast, converts nicotinamide riboside to nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) by phosphorylation and adenylylation. Crystal structures of human Nrk1 bound to nucleoside and nucleotide substrates and products revealed an enzyme structurally similar to Rossmann fold metabolite kinases and allowed the identification of active site residues, which were shown to be essential for human Nrk1 and Nrk2 activity in vivo. Although the structures account for the 500-fold discrimination between nicotinamide riboside and pyrimidine nucleosides, no enzyme feature was identified to recognize …

Effect Of Processing On The Composition And Microstructure Of Buttermilk And Its Milk Fat Globule Membranes, Pierre Morin, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Yves Pouliot

Dairy Science

The effect of cream pasteurization on the composition and microstructure of buttermilk after pasteurization, evaporation and spray-drying was studied. The composition of milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) isolated from buttermilk samples was also characterized. Pasteurization of cream resulted in higher lipid recovery in the buttermilk. Spray-drying of buttermilk had a significant effect on phospholipid content and composition. After spray-drying, the phospholipid content decreased by 38.2% and 40.6%, respectively in buttermilk from raw or pasteurized cream when compared with initial buttermilks. Pasteurization of cream resulted in the highest increase in whey protein recovery in MFGM isolates compared with all other processing …

Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha Oct 2007

Critical Analysis Of Problems Encountered In Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge In Science Teaching By Primary School Teachers In Zimbabwe, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

In Zimbabwe the need to incorporate indigenous knowledge in science education to reflect local cultural settings cannot be overemphasized. Current policies on science are situated in Western cultural definitions, thus marginalizing indigenous knowledge, which is misconceived as irrational and illogical. This study used qualitative research methods. Ten teachers were purposively selected and interviewed to gain their insights into problems faced in incorporating indigenous knowledge into science teaching. The study found that the problems were attitudinal, institutional, and systemic. Teachers were found to be conservative “gatekeepers” who exhibited negative attitudes toward indigenous science and supported maintaining the teaching of Western science. …

Devaluing Invention: The Push For Patent Reform, Don Tiller Oct 2007

Devaluing Invention: The Push For Patent Reform, Don Tiller

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Recently, it has been argued that the U.S. patent system is broken and has become a social burden, merely serving to grant unnecessary economic monopolies at the expense of consumers without creating an extra incentive to invent; or worse, that the patent system actually reduces incentive to invent. These critics contend that, in effect, the patent system functions as both a short- and long-run economic burden on society. The result has been a strong effort to reduce the extent of patent rights at both the legislative and judicial branches of government. Some of the proposed reforms, and the policies on …

Tourism In Lugu Hu: Helpful Or Harmful? Examining The Impact Of Tourism On Lugu Lake’S People And Environment, Joana Chan Oct 2007

Tourism In Lugu Hu: Helpful Or Harmful? Examining The Impact Of Tourism On Lugu Lake’S People And Environment, Joana Chan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Is tourism a boon or burden to the land and the people that it impacts? This question has plagued academics for ages. On the one hand, tourism brings not only definite economic growth for the local people, but also motivation for preservation of the local landscape. On the other hand, the arrival of tourists also ironically brings definite cultural and environmental transformations to the very people and land that visitors travel so far to see and experience.

My research examines the complexities of tourism and its impact on the environment and people of Lugu Lake, Yunnan. By surveying social and …

In the first section of this paper I will give a brief introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, sacred geography, and pilgrimage. First, I will discuss some of the basic precepts of Tibetan Buddhism, and how it differs from other branches of Buddhism in belief and practice. I then will address the role of sacred geography in this belief system and in the lives of the Tibetan people. Finally I will talk about the connection between the people and their sacred places expressed in the form of pilgrimage. In the second section of this paper I will recount my personal experience of …

Usa: A Civilization Of Its Own?, Peter O'Brien Oct 2007

Usa: A Civilization Of Its Own?, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

"The object [America] is wholly new in the world. It is singular...Nothing in history is parallel to it."1 -----Edmund Burke

Distinct civilizations can have common origins.2 Byzantine, Western and Islamic civilization each grew its separate way from Judaic and Hellenic roots. In similar fashion, the United States of America may well be in the process of branching off to form a civilization increasingly distinguishable from European civilization. The separation has been gradually but steadily underway since 1776. However, in civilizational time, 240 years represent a rather short period. The division has not yet fully matured. So the precise …

Immigration Policy, Cultural Pluralism And Trade: Evidence From The White Australia Policy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Oct 2007

Immigration Policy, Cultural Pluralism And Trade: Evidence From The White Australia Policy, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Examining data for Australia and 101 trading partners that span the years 1989–2000, we find immigrants from nations afforded preference under the White Australia policy exert greater proportional influences on Australian imports from their home countries compared to immigrants from nations not privy to such preference. Immigrants from this latter group of countries influence Australian exports to their home countries proportionally more than do immigrants from the former group. We also find immigrant-trade links vary across disaggregated measures of trade. The results suggest that cultural diversity, affected here by immigration policy, is relevant to a nation’s trade patterns.

Traditional Natural Resources Management Practices And Biodiversity Conservation In Ghana: A Review Of Local Concepts And Issues On Change And Sustainability, Paul Sarfo-Mensah, W. Oduro Oct 2007

Traditional Natural Resources Management Practices And Biodiversity Conservation In Ghana: A Review Of Local Concepts And Issues On Change And Sustainability, Paul Sarfo-Mensah, W. Oduro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper reviews the importance of traditional natural resources management practices in Ghana. It highlights the roles of traditional beliefs, taboos and rituals in the management and conservation of key natural resources in the country. The paper is based on desk studies undertaken as part of anthropological studies conducted in the forest-savanna transitional agroecological zone of Ghana to study the spirituality of forests and conservation. Among the major conclusions of the paper is that although the potential of traditional natural resources management for biodiversity conservation in Ghana is enormous, the sustainability of these practices is seriously threatened. This stems from …

Febrile Response And Decrease In Circulating Lymphocytes Following Acute Infection Of White-Tailed Deer Fawns With Either A Bvdv1 Or A Bvdv2 Strain, Julia F. Ridpath, C. Scott Mark, Christopher C.L. Chase, Alanson C. Ridpath, John D. Neill Oct 2007

Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Although commonly associated with infection in cattle, bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) also replicate in many domestic and wildlife species, including cervids. Bovine viral diarrhea viruses have been isolated from a number of cervids, including mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus), but little information is available regarding clinical presentation and progression of infection in these species. In preliminary studies of experimental infection of deer with BVDV, researchers noted seroconversion but no clinical signs. In this study, we infected white-tailed deer fawns that were negative …
