Articulation, Narrative, Integrity, And The Practice Of Self-Formation In The Work Of Charles Taylor, Alasdair Macintyre, And David L. Norton, David Glen Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This dissertation addresses the following questions and concerns related to the formation of the moral self: (1) The relationship between certain moral choices and a person's sense of personal or moral identity: specifically, how is it that certain choices, actions, character traits, or goods come to be interpreted as either constituting, or as being inseparable from, one's conscience, one's moral identity, or one's moral self? (2) The relationship between the conception of the good with which one identifies and the conception of the good of one's community of origin: how does one develop a conception of the good, how does …

Behavioral Responses Of Leatherback Juveniles (Dermochelys Coriacea L) To Lights Used In The Longline Fishery, Jodie M. Gless
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The pelagic longline fishery is responsible for significant mortality to sea turtles as a result of foul hooking, entanglement in the lines, and internal injury after consuming the baited hook. Bait, gear and lights (used to attract the target fishes to the baits at night) are three variables that could also attract sea turtles to the lines. This study tests the role of the lights in attracting leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) turtles and compares their behavior to the loggerhead (Caretta carelta), shown in previous studies to orient toward both lightsticks and battery powered LEDs used in the fishery. The same lights …

The Effects Of Preattention In An Online Advertising Context: A Neuroscience Perspective, Milica Milosavljevic
The Effects Of Preattention In An Online Advertising Context: A Neuroscience Perspective, Milica Milosavljevic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Consumers are exposed to thousands of marketing messages every day. In such a cluttered environment, gaining consumers· attention becomes an increasingly important business objective. This study expands the concept of attention from a simple view of attention as se lection of stimuli to a more elaborate two step process consisting of (I) preattention and (2) focal attention. The focus of this research is on preattention, which is determined by physical characteristics of objects in a visual scene. This study also i1Pproves the measurement ofpreattention by surveying the neuroscience literature and using a computational model to measure preattention. This improved measure …
The Epidemiology Of Spina Bifida In Ireland: An Anthropological Approach, Kathryn A. O'Donnell
The Epidemiology Of Spina Bifida In Ireland: An Anthropological Approach, Kathryn A. O'Donnell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A sample of 97 human skeletal remains from Ireland were examined to investigate the etiology of spina bifida, a form of neural tube defect. It is unclear whether the disease results from environmental or genetic causes. Collections of human remains from three sites dated to nineteenth century were studied in an attempt to identify the period during which the prehistoric rates of spina bifida rose to modern levels. In these collections, nineteenth century spina bifida rates were higher than either prehistoric or modern rates. Thus, nineteenth century Ireland experienced peak rates of spina bifida. Nutrition in modern day Ireland has …
Body Condition Of Juvenile Hoplosternum Littorale (Hancock, 1828) In Anthropogenic Refuges On The Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation During The 2006 Dry Season, Gianna Ramdin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study investigated variations m body condition of brown hoplos (Hoplosternum littorale) refuging in ponds in the Big Cypress region of southern Florida. During the dry season environmental parameters fluctuated, water depth and dissolved oxygen decreased, while temperature and conductivity increased. Standard lengths and wet weights of 675 juvenile brown hoplos were measured from seven populations. Body condition was compared between populations and through time (early vs. late dry season) using length-weight relationship and Fulton's condition factor. The only significant spatia-temporal variations in body condition occurred in the deepest refuges. One population demonstrated an unexpected positive change in body condition, …
Believers In Dixie: A Cultural Geography Of The Kentucky Shakers, Marc A. Rhorer
Believers In Dixie: A Cultural Geography Of The Kentucky Shakers, Marc A. Rhorer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The Kentucky Shakers were distinct from those of Ohio and the Northeastern United States because they were products of the cultural environment of the Upper South. The variation originated in the country's settlement and migration patterns. People with similar cultural backgrounds tended to concentrate and migrate together. As the western frontier expanded, settlers with more socio-cultural commonalities tended to migrate in similar patterns and maintain a sense of cultural cohesion in the newly opened westward frontier. We can observe the similarities between the Kentucky Shakers of the Pleasant Hill and South Union villages and their Southern neighbors by analyzing cultural …
Carbohydrate Recognition Of Bi-Pyridine Bridged Peptide Receptor, Claudia A. Johnson
Carbohydrate Recognition Of Bi-Pyridine Bridged Peptide Receptor, Claudia A. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A novel carbohydrate receptor based on the structure of the antibiotic polymxin B was synthesized. The receptor was a cyclic heptapeptide. which was bridged using 2, 2'-bi pyridine-5,5"- dicarboxylic acid. The association constants of the receptor and a variety of sugars were determined using UV /Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and observed log K0 values are in the range from 3 .8 to 4.1 for the pentoses, logKa 3.3 to 3.8 for the hexoxes and 0 to 2.9 logKa values from 0-2.9 for disaccharides and logKa of2.6 to 3.11 for the charged sugars. We demonstrated that polymixin based receptors are capable …
Building Cosmopolitical Solidarity From The Antigone: A Return To The Chorus, Rebecca L. Mccarthy
Building Cosmopolitical Solidarity From The Antigone: A Return To The Chorus, Rebecca L. Mccarthy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
“Building Cosmopolitical Solidarity from the Antigone.” takes an in-depth look at how the Antigone by Sophocles has been used by social movements and social/politically concerned playwrights, theorists and activists as either a tool for discursive and performative resistance, or as a way to reinforce status-quo state rule since at least the Enlightenment to present day. I argue that Sophocles’ characters Creon and Antigone are not ideal images for social movements who seek a cosmopolitical democracy. Rather it is to Sophocles’ Chorus and the Watchman that we must turn when proposing democratic cosmopolitanism. Thus, a new communication approach is proposed: a …
Characteristics Affecting Prey Vulnerability And Avian Habitat Selection In The Florida Everglades, Rachael L. Harris
Characteristics Affecting Prey Vulnerability And Avian Habitat Selection In The Florida Everglades, Rachael L. Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The vulnerability of prey to capture plays a fundamental role in determining overall prey availability for wading birds. Structural complexity can act to decrease prey vulnerability and influence foraging habitat selection. To determine how structural complexity can affect habitat selection I conducted a use vs. availability study throughout the Florida Everglades in 2005 and 2006. Results indicated that wading birds chose foraging sites that had less emergent vegetation and a thicker flocculent layer relative to random sites. Submerged vegetation, and the height of emergent vegetation did not affect wading bird site selection. A difference in habitat selection between years was …

Religion And Group Rights: Are Churches (Just) Like The Boy Scouts?, Richard W. Garnett
Religion And Group Rights: Are Churches (Just) Like The Boy Scouts?, Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
What role do religious communities, groups, and associations play - and, what role should they play - in our thinking and conversations about religious freedom and church-state relations? These and related questions - that is, questions about the rights and responsibilities of religious institutions - are timely, difficult, and important. And yet, they are often neglected.
It is not new to observe that American judicial decisions and public conversations about religious freedom tend to focus on matters of individuals' rights, beliefs, consciences, and practices. The special place, role, and freedoms of groups, associations, and institutions are often overlooked. However, if …
Church, State, And The Practice Of Love, Richard W. Garnett
Church, State, And The Practice Of Love, Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
In his first encyclical letter, Deus caritas est, Pope Benedict XVI describes the Church as a community of love. In this letter, he explores the organized practice love by and through the Church, and the relationship between this practice, on the one hand, and the Church's commitment to the just ordering of the State and society, on the other. God is love, he writes. This paper considers the implications of this fact for the inescapably complicated nexus of church-state relations in our constitutional order.
The specific goal for this paper is to draw from Deus caritas est some insight into …

Life Without Water : Expression Of Plant Lea Genes By An Anhydrobiotic Arthropod., Steven Hand, Dana Jones, Michael Menze, Trudy Witt
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Anhydrobiotic animals protect cellular architecture and metabolic machinery in the dry state, yet the molecular repertoire supporting this profound dehydration tolerance is not fully understood. For the desiccation-tolerant crustacean, Artemia franciscana, we report differential expression of two distinct mRNAs encoding for proteins that share sequence similarities and structural features with late-embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins originally discovered in plants. Bioinformatic analyses support assignment of the LEA proteins from A. franciscana to group 3. This eucoelomate species is the most highly evolved animal for which LEA gene expression has been reported. It is becoming clear that an ensemble of micromolecules and macromolecules …
Neuroimaging And The "Complexity" Of Capital Punishment, O. Carter Snead
Neuroimaging And The "Complexity" Of Capital Punishment, O. Carter Snead
Journal Articles
The growing use of brain imaging technology to explore the causes of morally, socially, and legally relevant behavior is the subject of much discussion and controversy in both scholarly and popular circles. From the efforts of cognitive neuroscientists in the courtroom and the public square, the contours of a project to transform capital sentencing both in principle and in practice have emerged. In the short term, these scientists seek to play a role in the process of capital sentencing by serving as mitigation experts for defendants, invoking neuroimaging research on the roots of criminal violence to support their arguments. Over …
Addressing The Incoherency Of The Preemption Provision Of The Copyright Act Of 1976, Joseph P. Bauer
Addressing The Incoherency Of The Preemption Provision Of The Copyright Act Of 1976, Joseph P. Bauer
Journal Articles
Section 301 of the Copyright Act of 1976 expressly preempts state law actions that are within the "general scope of copyright" and that assert claims that are "equivalent to" the rights conferred by the Act. The Act eliminated the previous system of common law copyright for unpublished works, which had prevailed under the prior 1909 Copyright Act. By federalizing copyright law, the drafters of the statute sought to achieve uniformity and to avoid the potential for state protection of infinite duration.
The legislative history of § 301 stated that this preemption provision was set forth "in the clearest and most …
The Origins Of Article Iii "Arising Under" Jurisdiction, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.
The Origins Of Article Iii "Arising Under" Jurisdiction, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.
Journal Articles
Article III of the Constitution provides that the judicial Power of the United States extends to all cases arising under the Constitution, laws, and treaties of the United States. What the phrase arising under imports in Article III has long confounded courts and scholars. This Article examines the historical origins of Article III arising under jurisdiction. First, it describes English legal principles that governed the jurisdiction of courts of general and limited jurisdiction--principles that animated early American jurisprudence regarding the scope of arising under jurisdiction. Second, it explains how participants in the framing and ratification of the Constitution understood arising …

Development Of Test Paradigms For Operant Conditioning Of Wild Norway Rats, Susan M. Jojola, Patrick W. Burke, Gary W. Witmer, Dale L. Nolte
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Many eradication efforts to remove rats (Rattus spp.) from islands have been successful. Eradications are expensive and labor-intensive which makes early detection of, and response to, reinvasion by rats critical. A better understanding of rat behavior could facilitate early detection and rapid response to intercept invaders, such as with trap placement and design, and toxic bait presentation and dispersal. This was a methods development study of test paradigms to operantly condition wild rats to run on an activity wheel and to press a lever for use in future behavior studies. Operant conditioning is the process of associating specific responses …

Alternative And Renewable Energy, Emil Opitz
Alternative And Renewable Energy, Emil Opitz
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
The world is going to run out of fossil fuels in the near future. An estimated one to two trillion barrels of oil is believed recoverable using today’s technologies. This amount of oil will last the world no more than 70 years, and perhaps only half that long. A system of alternative and renewable fuels is our only solution to this problem. With proper action and development, a worldwide energy crisis will be avoided.
We have an abundance of renewable and alternative energy sources that are not currently being used, enough to supply almost all of our energy needs. Wind …

Multiple Mixed-Type Attractors In A Competition Model, J. M. Cushing, Shandelle M. Henson, Chantel C. Blackburn
Faculty Publications
We show that a discrete-time, two-species competition model with Ricker (exponential) nonlinearities can exhibit multiple mixed-type attractors. By this is meant dynamic scenarios in which there are simultaneously present both coexistence attractors (in which both species are present) and exclusion attractors (in which one species is absent). Recent studies have investigated the inclusion of life-cycle stages in competition models as a casual mechanism for the existence of these kinds of multiple attractors. In this paper we investigate the role of nonlinearities in competition models without life-cycle stages. © 2007 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni
Optimization Of Porcine Buccal Mucosa For In Vitro Evaluation, Upendra D. Kulkarni
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Porcine buccal mucosa has been extensively used as in vitro model to study the permeability of drugs and assess their potential to deliver through buccal route. Porcine buccal mucosa is found to be very similar to human oral mucosa in structure and function. However, the in vitro permeation studies across porcine buccal mucosa show high variability which is mostly due to the various experimental and biological variables that are often overlooked while conducting such studies.
The precise nature of the permeability barrier offered by the various tissue layers of buccal mucosa was investigated in this study. It was observed that …
