Exploring The Ligand Binding Site On The Dopamine Transporter By Photoaffinity Labeling And Site-Directed Mutagenesis, Maria Laura Parnas
Exploring The Ligand Binding Site On The Dopamine Transporter By Photoaffinity Labeling And Site-Directed Mutagenesis, Maria Laura Parnas
Theses and Dissertations
The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a neuronal presynaptic transmembrane protein that clears released dopamine (DA) from the synaptic space, regulating the neurotransmitter concentration and availability, DAT and the related serotonin (SERT) and norepinephrine (NET) transporters belong to the SLC6 family of Na+ and CI- dependent symporters, and are major targets for the action of several drugs, including the psychostimulant cocaine. DAT is predicted to possess 12 transmembrane spanning domains (TMs), with both N- and C-termini located intracellularly. Extensive research efforts to gain insight on the molecular aspects of DAT have been attempted, but the three-dimensional arrangement of the protein as …

Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma
Stochastic Models For Enhancing Agility Of Supply Chains, Alok K. Verma
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This paper deals with the application of stochastic inventory model to the three-tier supply chain and verifying the values obtained by mathematical model with discrete event simulation. We investigate three-stage serial supply chain with stochastic demand and fixed replenishment lead-time. Inventory holding costs are charged at each stage, and each stage may incur a consumer backorder penalty cost charged by primary supplier to secondary supplier. The customer-demand follows Poisson distribution. We implement Base Stock model for inventory control at both suppliers. Computer simulation is then designed in such a way that it satisfied all the assumptions for mathematical model. Simulation …

Craniofacial Form And Temporalis Configuration In Middle Pleistocene Hominins, Lynn Lucas
Craniofacial Form And Temporalis Configuration In Middle Pleistocene Hominins, Lynn Lucas
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study focused on the temporalis configuration in Middle Pleistocene hominins and how that configuration is correlated with various structures in the craniofacial complex. Three hypotheses were tested using univariate comparisons, regression, and scaling analyses. Results showed that Middle Pleistocene hominins have small anterior temporalis muscles relative to the size oftheir faces, contrary to expectation. This discrepancy may be explained by a decrease in the size of the temporal fossa as a consequence of postorbital constriction concurrent with encephalization. Additionally, this configuration may have implications for the biomechanics of chewing, rendering the masticatory structures of Middle Pleistocene hominins less efficient …
Do Fiddler Crab Larvae Show Phenotypic Plasticity?, Catherine E. Christopher
Do Fiddler Crab Larvae Show Phenotypic Plasticity?, Catherine E. Christopher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Larval release by adult fiddler crabs occurs during the ebbing tides, but its timing relative to the day-night and tidal amplitude cycles depends upon tidal form (e.g., shows phenotypical plasticity). Crabs (Uca thayeri) from Florida's East Coast are exposed to semidiurnal tides and release their larvae at night, whereas crabs from Florida's West Coast exposed to mixed tides release their larvae during the afternoon. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the larvae could hatch at times other than those correlated with the tidal form at their location. Clusters of eggs at similar stages of development, 24-72 h …
Do The Dynamics Of Insulin Delivery Matter For Management Of Diabetes Mellitus? Evidence From Molecular Measures In A Diabetic Rat Model., Danielle Reis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The current study uses a diabetic rat model to measure the effects of pulsatile versus continuous insulin delivery on IRS-2 in the liver. The purpose is to determine if pulsatile, compared with continuous, insulin delivery leads to reduced insulin resistance in diabetic rats. Insulin signaling in the liver is mediated primarily through IRS-2 and tissue responsiveness to insulin may be detected by monitoring the lRS-2 signaling pathway. Western blots were performed to measure IRS-2 protein levels for each delivery condition and treatment day. Results revealed that overall, the pulsatile insulin delivery method showed a significant increase in IRS-2 levels over …
Domestic Water In Northern Trinidad: Access, Collection And Quality, Siana Lakhan
Domestic Water In Northern Trinidad: Access, Collection And Quality, Siana Lakhan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Trinidad is highly dependent on surface water as a source for domestic water supply. Due to lack of infrastructure some areas have limited access to potable/reliable source of water. Increases in industrialization and population are putting more pressure on water resources, exacerbating the problem. Part of this study looks at how, and from where people in different geographic regions in northern Trinidad collect and store water. Results indicate that urban areas rely on public water as a water source. The urban fringe relies on a public water supply as well as self-supplied sources. Rural regions depend solely on a selfsupply …
Effects Of Intervention Using Everyday Routines On The Social Reciprocity Of Children With Autism, Debra Leach
Effects Of Intervention Using Everyday Routines On The Social Reciprocity Of Children With Autism, Debra Leach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Children with autism often have deficits in social reciprocity, the ability to participate in long chains of back and forth interactions with a social partner. Research has shown that deficits in social communication skills, such as social reciprocity, can have lifelong negative impacts on the lives of individuals with autism. Routines-based intervention for young children with autism is supported by research and educational law. However, there are limited studies showing the effects of routines-based intervention for children with autism. There are no studies that address social reciprocity using routinesbased intervention for children with autism. This preliminary investigation explored if parent …
Effects Of Age On Children's Binding Of Actors With Actions, Arie Spirgel
Effects Of Age On Children's Binding Of Actors With Actions, Arie Spirgel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In the current experiment, a group of 10-year-olds and a group of young adults watched a series of short video clips of different women performing different actions. One week later, participants were tested on their ability to discriminate the old videos from distracter videos, which included new actor/old action videos, new action/old actor videos, novel combinations of familiar actors and actions, as well as entirely new videos. The results provide evidence that the ability to accurately bind actors with their actions reaches adult levels by age 10. The results are discussed in terms of the brain areas involved in memory …
Effects Of Target Neuron Loss On Olfactory Receptor Neurons In The Adult Rat, Krista K. Sultan
Effects Of Target Neuron Loss On Olfactory Receptor Neurons In The Adult Rat, Krista K. Sultan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Unlike most neurons in the adult nervous system, olfactory receptor neurons (ORN), found in the olfactory epithelium (OE), continually turnover in the adult rat. These neurons project their axons to the olfactory bulb which is their central target. The present study eliminated target neurons in the bulb using N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) to examine the effects of target loss on ORN survival and maturation. We compared the effects of the NMDA lesion to bulbectomy, a permanent surgical removal of the bulb, which simultaneously causes damage to ORN axons. We found that unlike bulbectomy, large numbers of dying OE cells were not observed …
Development Of Methods For Separation And Characterization Of Proteins From Gorgonian Sources, Steven W. Jett
Development Of Methods For Separation And Characterization Of Proteins From Gorgonian Sources, Steven W. Jett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Research into the chemical constituents of marine organisms is a relatively new and growing field, given that much of the marine environment has only in the last half century become accessible. Despite the strides that have been made in ocean exploration, the marine biome has still been only barely explored. Much of the impetus for the isolation and identification of chemical entities from marine organisms has been related to their potential as medicines. For a number of reasons, including synthetic efficiency, this has meant that many marine compounds isolated and studied have been small molecules. In recent years, large strides …
Efficient Representation Of Natural Visual Input In The Thalamus, Mohammad Dastjerdi
Efficient Representation Of Natural Visual Input In The Thalamus, Mohammad Dastjerdi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In this dissertat ion, the early visual system is used to explore the role of efficiency in the general organization of the nervous system. Efficient representation theory predicts that neurons dynamically change their responses to changes in the environment in order to maintain their efficiency. To directly test the predication of this theory, a computational model and a neurophysiological experiment are used. Using a computational model, we investigate the sparseness of the response of filters at each stage of the model of the visual pathway. We find that the temporal bandpass filter and the rectification in each stage improves the …
Factors Affecting Wading Bird Prey Concentrations In The Everglades During The Dry Season, Brian Garrett P.
Factors Affecting Wading Bird Prey Concentrations In The Everglades During The Dry Season, Brian Garrett P.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
One factor that potentially controls the distribution and density of wading bird prey within open-water marsh habitats during seasonal drying events is the amount of available aquatic habitat, which is partly a function of the amount of microtopographic relief at a given location. To determine how microtopographic relief affects prey concentrations during dry-downs a simulation model was developed and run using empirical microtopographic data collected from the Everglades. The simulation suggests that those locations within the marsh with higher levels of microtopographic relief concentrate prey earlier during the dry-down period and potentially to greater densities overall. In addition, a model …
Foraging Habitat Modeling And Nesting Ecology Of Wood Storks In Everglades National Park, Heidi K. Herring
Foraging Habitat Modeling And Nesting Ecology Of Wood Storks In Everglades National Park, Heidi K. Herring
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Understanding the foraging and nesting ecology of Wood Storks will play an important role in Everglades restoration because this species has specific resource requirements during the breeding season which ultimately affect nest success. I conducted a foraging habitat use and selection study, which indicated that Wood Storks from coastal colonies, Paurotis Pond and Rodgers River Bay, require a narrow range of water depths in the mangrove-saltwater marsh ecotone near their colonies as well in the freshwater marsh habitats of the inland Everglades. Wood Storks nesting at the inland colony, Tamiarni West, relied heavily upon nearby freshwater marsh habitat and selected …
Exploring Diachronic Change In The Population-Specific Vocalizations Of Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes)., Andrew R. Halloran
Exploring Diachronic Change In The Population-Specific Vocalizations Of Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes)., Andrew R. Halloran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Chimpanzees have long been documented as using population-specific vocalizations, implying learning rather than just genetics in chimpanzee calls. In order for population-specific vocalizations to arise, diachronic change, or evolution, of the various features of the vocalizations must occur. When a population is split, as they were in the current study, there are changes of social structure, environment, and emotional stress (all factors which can lead to rapid phonological change in humans). These factors can act as a catalyst for punctuated diachronic change. A vocal survey was performed on two groups of chimpanzees who had been separated from each other two …
From Economics To Resources: Teaching Environmental Sustainability In Peru's Public Education, Ana Adriazola-Rodriguez
From Economics To Resources: Teaching Environmental Sustainability In Peru's Public Education, Ana Adriazola-Rodriguez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This dissertation examines the teaching of environmental awareness in Peru's public educational system and how it needs to be consciously taught and improved in order to overcome contamination and pollution of resources and decrease poverty. This is a situation afflicting a significant percentage of Peruvians, who face difficulty in surviving and living well because the scarcity of clean air and water, unpolluted land, and affordable energy, which are basic environmental resources. The teaching of environmental awareness, as mandated by Educational Peruvian Laws and curriculum, should be redesigned to promote environmental ethical awareness and sustainability to guard Peru's natural and cultural …

Head Lines Of The Extra Ordinary: Collisions And Miracles, Kathrine Leone Wright
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
"Head Lines of the Extra Ordinary: Collisions and Miracles" is a language-driven 15-story fiction collection that experiments with intertwining the traditions of oral and written storytelling. Within these stories, ordinary people step up to the extraordinary because of an unusual occurrence that requires a moment of change. Several of the stories within the collection take their premise from actual news headlines. To lend cohesion to the collection, multiple stories contain one or more reappearing characters.
Home Range And Activity Patterns In A South Florida Population Of The Tortoise Gopherus Polyphemus On Savannas Preserve State Park, Jennifer L. Davis
Home Range And Activity Patterns In A South Florida Population Of The Tortoise Gopherus Polyphemus On Savannas Preserve State Park, Jennifer L. Davis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) lives in upland habitats throughout its life. Recent rapid urbanization of coastal Florida is resulting in large scale habitat fragmentation that negatively affects this and other upland species. Losses of upland habitats result in regulatory actions that include mitigation programs and animal relocations which currently occur in the absence of understanding region-specific behavior and habitat needs. Gopher Tortoise populations are similar to one another in that males have larger home ranges than females, males defend burrows and mates during the breeding season, all have a high degree of home range overlap, and forage on similar …
Interleukin 10 (Il-10) Selectively Inhibits Neovascularization In The Murine Model Of Retinopathy Of Prematurity, Evertz Stenson Solomon
Interleukin 10 (Il-10) Selectively Inhibits Neovascularization In The Murine Model Of Retinopathy Of Prematurity, Evertz Stenson Solomon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Ocular neovascularization (NV), the development of new blood vessels in the eye, occurs when excessive vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is produced. Eventually NV may lead to photoreceptor loss and or blindness, as it does in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and diabetic retinopathy. We tested the hypothesis that the anti-inflammatory cytokine, interleukin-10 (IL-10); can reduce inflammation and block NV in the affected areas of the retina. The mouse ROP model was used for this study of NV. Seven day old neonates stayed in 75% oxygen for five days, then were given intraocular injection of IL-100 and …

Set in the backdrop of Renaissance Italy, Rita soon …
A Modeling Methodology For An Rtos, Sifat Islam
A Modeling Methodology For An Rtos, Sifat Islam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Enhanced system design productivity is key to satisfying time-to-market demands. One will have to exploit design reuse methodology to meet project schedule requirements. Integration of components often fails due to various concurrency violations. Concurrency issues arise when components executing in parallel share resources and interact with each other. Such a system may have intermittent, yet catastrophic failures, if these concurrency issues are not addressed properly. In this thesis, we propose a methodology for developing concurrency compliant components from a requirement document. We have applied this methodology for developing process management and memory management aspects of a Real Time Operating System …
A Phylogeny Of Mexican Ambystoma Salamanders (Caudata: Ambystomatidae) From Larval Characters, Lauren A. Cole
A Phylogeny Of Mexican Ambystoma Salamanders (Caudata: Ambystomatidae) From Larval Characters, Lauren A. Cole
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A phylogeny of Mexican Ambystoma salamanders was constructed using larval morphology. Characters were scored for 19 ambystomatid species from Mexico and North America Twenty-five continuous characters came from external measurements of cranial and branchial features and ratios of measurements. Twenty-six categorical characters were scored from internal and external larval, branchial, and cranial features, as well as overall color and adult life history. Cladograms constructed from individual character matrices lack major resolution beyond individual species level. The consensus cladogram did not resolve the majority of species, and was similar to consensus results from previous cladistic analysis based on molecular characters. Convergent …
A Phased Approach To Evaluate The Performance Of Handoff By Mobile Handsets, Arjumand Fatima Siddiqui
A Phased Approach To Evaluate The Performance Of Handoff By Mobile Handsets, Arjumand Fatima Siddiqui
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The ever increasing demand for capacity in wireless cellular networks is resolved by decreasing the size of the cells. The smaller cells created inside large cells are called microcells and they cover smaller and dense areas. As a result of this, the mobile device ends up changing the base stations or performing handover at a much higher rate. To maintain the reliability and quality of the call, it is obligatory to ascertain that the handover is performed at a proper location. If the handover is delayed or the mobile handset drags its base station, it is more probable that either …

Activity And Habitat Selection By Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta L.) And Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas. L.) Hatchlings: A Laboratory And Field Study., Morgan M. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Loggerhead and green turtle neonates migrate from Florida's coast during a 24-36 h frenzy. Post-frenzy loggerheads are often found in flotsam (Sargassum), while postfrenzy green turtles "disappear." This study compared the frenzy and post-frenzy activity of each species, their response to flotsam (in the laboratory and field), and the role of experience in habitat selection. Both species were most active during day I; activity thereafter declined (especially in loggerheads). Inactive loggerheads occupied Sargassum and open water (day or night) whereas inactive green turtles occupied Sargassum by day and both habitats at night. Exposure to Sargassum had no effect on the …
Approach, A Voidance, And The Mouse Paradigm: An Examination Of Wording And Relationships With Other Hedonic Constructs, Elizabeth Anne Saigal
Approach, A Voidance, And The Mouse Paradigm: An Examination Of Wording And Relationships With Other Hedonic Constructs, Elizabeth Anne Saigal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The two principal areas of research addressed by this study were: a) further validation of Nowak and Vallacher's mouse paradigm, and b) comparison of literatures all theoretically derived from principles of hedonics. Validation of the mouse paradigm included examination of the instructional set and detection of individual differences in various hedonically derived measures of personality. The mouse instructions were framed in terms of approach ('less good ' versus ' more good') or in terms of avoidance (' more bad' versus ' less bad ' ). Inclusion of inventories based on the principles of approach and avoidance allowed for examination of …
Association Patterns Of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Stenellafrontalis, In The Bahamas, Lillian S. Welsh
Association Patterns Of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Stenellafrontalis, In The Bahamas, Lillian S. Welsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examined the coefficients of association (COAs) of Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenellafrontalis, in the Bahamas that have been part of a long-term underwater observational study since 1985. First, three social units were designated based on analysis of association indices. The units appeared to coincide with clusters of individuals with similar ranges; however, there were insufficient ranging data to determine whether the social units were separate geographical units. The associations within and between these social units were analyzed to determine whether the units comprised separate communities. Results indicated that separate communities did not exist. Analysis of association indices of the …
