Acute Toxicity Of Carbaryl, Methiocarb, And Carbosulfan To The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) And Guppy (Poecilia Reticulata), Muhammet Boran, İlhan Altinok, Erol Çapkin, Hi̇kmet Karaçam, Veysel Bi̇çer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The acute toxicity of carbaryl, methiocarb and carbosulfan to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; 1.92 ± 0.5 g) and guppies (Poecilia reticulata; 0.45 ± 0.04 g) was evaluated in 96-h toxicity tests under static conditions. Concentrations in the toxicity test ranged from 0.85 to 8.5 mg/l for carbaryl, from 0.7 to 28.0 mg/l for methiocarb, and from 0.031 to 12.5 mg/l for carbosulfan. Carbaryl and methiocarb were more toxic to rainbow trout than to guppies. However, compared with rainbow trout, guppies were more sensitive to carbosulfan. The incidence of mortality in fish increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing pesticide concentrations. The time required to kill 50% (LT_{50}) of the rainbow trout at the lowest concentrations of carbaryl, methiocarb, and carbosulfan was 51 h 12 min, 74 h 35 min, and 107 h 57 min, respectively. As insecticide concentrations were increased, LT_{50} values decreased (P < 0.05).

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) on growth performance and immune characteristics of piglets. In all, 60 crossbred piglets (Duroc x Landrace x Yorkshire) were allocated to 2 dietary treatments; 3 replications of 10 pigs were used for each treatment, and all piglets were weaned at 35 days and fed for 23 days. The results showed that average daily gain (ADG) improved (1.44% vs. 1.36%) in piglets fed the FSBM diet and feed gain ratio (FGR) decreased by 5.56% (P < 0.05) compared to the controls (soybean meal treatment). The level of serum IgG decreased 27.2% (P < 0.01) in piglets fed FSBM. Lymphocytes from whole blood had a lower proliferative response to concanavalin A (ConA) (P < 0.01) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the splenocytes of piglets fed FSBM also showed lower proliferative response to ConA (P < 0.05) and LPS (P < 0.01). The results indicated that FSBM was beneficial to growth performance and decreased the immune response to soybean protein in piglets.

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The golden-winged warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) inhabits lower elevations on reclaimed surface mines in Kentucky, an indication of recent range expansion in this imperiled species. In 2004 and 2005, I compared breeding habitat between the golden-winged warbler and blue-winged warbler (V. pinus) in eastern Kentucky at landscape, territory, and nest site scales. Distance to forest edge averaged 38 m for the golden-winged warbler and 33 m for the blue-winged warbler. Maximum territory size averaged 1.5 ha for the golden-winged warbler and 2.1 ha for the blue-winged warbler. The golden-winged warbler occurred at higher elevations (up to 912 m) than the blue-winged …

Smoke And Mirrors: A Cultural-Psychological Analysis Of Tobacco Use, Michael Melczak Jan 2007

Smoke And Mirrors: A Cultural-Psychological Analysis Of Tobacco Use, Michael Melczak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This theoretical dissertation explores tobacco use from the perspectives of social constructivism and phenomenological depth psychology. In Part I, tobacco use is described as a cultural artifact, and transformations in tobacco use are traced through three different cultural contexts or "worlds": the indigenous or aboriginal worldview, the European and American worldview of the 17th through mid-19th centuries, and the modern American worldview (or "modernity"). In each of these worldviews, the cultural context informed and influenced (or reflected and reproduced) understandings of tobacco use. One notices the transformation of tobacco use, for example, from a god to a commodity and from …

New Developments In Cyclized Arsenic And Antimony Thiolates, Taimur A. Shaikh Jan 2007

New Developments In Cyclized Arsenic And Antimony Thiolates, Taimur A. Shaikh

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

There is a continued interest in the properties of arsenic thiolate compounds for both industrial and biological uses. Recent discoveries in the medicinal properties of such compounds have resulted in a sustained need for the synthesis of new dithiarsolane compounds for research as anti-leukemic compounds. Close analogues of the 2-halo arsenic dithiolates, namely those with an arsenic-carbon bond instead of an arsenic-halide bond, have recently been shown to have some efficacy towards leukemia cells. Based on the hydrolytic character and the active role of glutathione with arsenic in vivo, the compounds reported here may also have such activity. Arsenic compounds …

Cigarette Smoking As A Public Health Hazard: Crafting Common Law And Legislative Strategies For Abatemen, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The debate over when, and to what extent, the government may regulate public smoking, is a contentious one of great moment. The point at which the line will be drawn with regard to an individual's right to smoke in public is narrowing. This right may stop at public restaurants and the workplace; or it may reach as far as public stadia, outdoor gathering spots and public streets. In 2006, one report showed 461 municipalities in thirty-three states and the District of Columbia, had adopted one-hundred percent smoke-free coverage in restaurants, bars or workplaces; and 135 municipalities had one-hundred percent coverage …

Effects Of Long-Term Exposure To Low Salinity On The Brackish-Water Amphiurid Brittlestar Ophiophragmus Filograneus (Lyman, 1875) From The Indian River Lagoon System, Florida, Richard L. Turner

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Previous studies on salinity tolerance of Ophiophragmus filograneus have documented its ability to acclimate to a wide range of salinities in the laboratory and to acclimatize to short-term natural reductions in salinity. In all cases, salinities below 10% were lethal within a few weeks of exposure. Recent long-term changes in hydrology have exposed a dense population of O. filograneus in the Banana River lagoon to 3 yr of salinities between 10% and 20%. The burrowing response of animals subjected to acute exposure was tested in the present study at salinities of 8, 10, 12, 14 (ambient), 19, and 24%. After …

Biogeography And The Cambrian Radiation Of Arachnomorph Arthropods, Jonathan R. Hendricks, Bruce S. Lieberman

Faculty Publications

Biogeographic patterns in primarily Cambrian arachnomorph taxa are investigated using a recently constructed phylogenetic hypothesis in order to explore the biogeographic context of the Cambrian radiation. A modified version of Brooks Parsimony Analysis is employed to elucidate patterns of vicariance and geodispersal in taxa from six regions (Laurentia, Baltica, Siberia, Australia, Africa and China). Well resolved vicariance and geodispersal trees are very similar and reconstruct Laurentia and China as sister areas. This close area relationship between Laurentia and China provides extensive evidence for congruent vicariance and range expansion in Cambrian arachnomorphs, while data from trilobites do not show this pattern. …

Comparing Citizens' And Managers' Concerns About Sagebrush Management And Restoration In The Great Basin, Mark W. Brunson, Jennifer Peterson Jan 2007

Comparing Citizens' And Managers' Concerns About Sagebrush Management And Restoration In The Great Basin, Mark W. Brunson, Jennifer Peterson

Reports

The Great Basin sagebrush steppe ecosystem is among the most imperiled in the U.S. Cheatgrass invasion, conifer encroachment, and catastrophic wildfires are considered to be primary catalysts of decline. Efforts are underway to restore and increase the resiliency of this damaged ecosystem through broad-scale applications of fuel reduction and restoration treatments involving mechanical removal, prescribed fire, and herbicide application. While research points to the potential benefits of these treatments, controversy and challenge often surface when treatments are proposed on public lands. Therefore it is critical for land managers to understand the views held by key stakeholder groups concerning management and …
