Extraction Of Text Regions In Natural Images, Sneha Sharma
Extraction Of Text Regions In Natural Images, Sneha Sharma
Theses
The detection and extraction of text regions in an image is a well known problem in the computer vision research area. The goal of this project is to compare two basic approaches to text extraction in natural (non-document) images: edge-based and connected-component based. The algorithms are implemented and evaluated using a set of images of natural scenes that vary along the dimensions of lighting, scale and orientation. Accuracy, precision and recall rates for each approach are analyzed to determine the success and limitations of each approach. Recommendations for improvements are given based on the results.

Role Of Classroom Questioning Strategies As They Relate To Reading Comprehension, Catherine M. Metz
Role Of Classroom Questioning Strategies As They Relate To Reading Comprehension, Catherine M. Metz
Graduate Research Papers
Instruction using comprehension strategies is important as students begin to construct meaning from text through a transactional process. This instruction can help prepare students to become better readers, as well as provide benefits for teachers and school-wide instruction. Questioning is important to comprehension for a variety of reasons and is used across all grade levels and throughout curricular areas.
Through the teaching of questioning, students are able to build backgrounds which they can utilize during their taking of high-stakes assessments, as well as school or district assessments. Questioning strategies, such as Question Answer Relationships, Questioning the Author, and Reciprocal Teaching, …
The Impact Of Readers' Workshop In A First Grade Classroom, Tara Lynn Seery
The Impact Of Readers' Workshop In A First Grade Classroom, Tara Lynn Seery
Graduate Research Papers
In this research I describe the Readers' Workshop approach, the impact that it has on a first graders' motivation, self-selection, and comprehension. This study was implemented during the 2006-2007 school year over a six week period. The observations at the beginning of the study indicated that the three focus students in this study lacked motivation, struggled with self-selection, and were in need of assistance to develop their comprehension skills. However, as Readers' Workshop was implemented, the students began to develop motivation to read on their own. They developed interests in books, and their comprehension strategies improved.

Using Technology To Assist In The Teaching Of Reading Instruction, Hallie M. Wyatt
Graduate Research Papers
A professional literature review was conducted on the use of technology in assisting teaching of reading instruction. Technology reviewed was categorized according to the essential elements of reading as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension). Vygotskian and Piagetian theories were used to evaluate the technology reviewed. The review ends with a series of recommendations for teachers who may consider integrating technology into their curriculum.
A Textual And Historical Case Against A Global Constitution, Andrew Kent
A Textual And Historical Case Against A Global Constitution, Andrew Kent
Faculty Scholarship
he emerging conventional wisdom in the legal academy is that individual rights under the U.S. Constitution should be extended to noncitizens outside the United States. This claim - called globalism in my article - has been advanced with increasing vigor in recent years, most notably in response to legal positions taken by the Bush administration during the war on terror. Against a Global Constitution challenges the textual and historical grounds advanced to support the globalist conventional wisdom and demonstrates that they have remarkably little support. At the same time, the article adduces textual and historical evidence that noncitizens were among …

A Diffusion Model Of Lightning Radiative Transfer Using Cylindrical Geometry, Rina Alfonso Santos
A Diffusion Model Of Lightning Radiative Transfer Using Cylindrical Geometry, Rina Alfonso Santos
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Clouds come in different shapes and sizes and are made up of different constituents. Realistic clouds are composed of heterogeneous distribution of constituents (ice particle, needle shaped objects, cubic, hexagonal, etc.). For tractability of solutions and smoothness of calculations, assumptions are made. The assumption is viable due to multiple scattering effect for propagation of radiation in random media. In Koshak et al. (1994), "Diffusion Model for Lightning Radiative Transfer", the cloud was treated as a nuclear reactor in order to obtain forms that can be readily computable and a simple geometry was chosen, i.e., a homogeneous rectangular parallelepiped Cloud In …

Peripheral nerve injury is known to induce several changes in the physiology and morphology of the injured afferent. These changes include hyperexcitability, decreased dorsal root potentials (DRP), loss of synaptic vesicles as well as loss of the vesicular glutamate transporter, VGLUT1. While many of the changes caused by peripheral injury revert with regeneration, others appear to be permanent. The loss of the stretch reflex for example is a puzzling outcome of recovery after peripheral nerve transection and regeneration, especially given that the electrical counterpart of the stretch reflex (the H-reflex) recovers after regeneration. We hypothesized that stretch induced transmission is …

The protein kinase mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) is a master controller of cell growth and proliferation due to its ability to integrate growth signals and regulate translation through 4E-BP1 and p70-S6K. We developed four phCMV2-HA-tagged plasmids to overexpress TOR in mammalian cells: Wild Type, D2357E (Kinase Dead), R2109A (PA Binding Deficient) and, S2035T (Rapamycin Resistant) each verified by restriction enzyme digestion and direct sequencing. Plasmid DNA was overexpressed in COS-7 cells and the 289 kDa protein detected in Western blots developed with anti-HA and anti-mTOR antibodies. Kinase activity of the overexpressed protein was detected by in vitro phosphorylation of …

Investigation Of The Reflective Properties Of A Left-Handed Metamaterial, Amanda Durham
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project is to investigate the reflective properties of a left-handed metamaterial (LHM) through the use of a finite element analysis software called FEMLAB. In the 1960's, V. Veselago theorized that a material with negative permeability and negative permittivity has a negative index of refraction. In 2000, such a metamaterial was built and demonstrated at microwave frequencies. Previous work had focused on the transmission properties of the metamaterial. In our work, the reflected wave was examined for a LHM subject to an incident transverse electric wave. The different generalizations, first proposed by Veselago, of the Fresnel and …

We report new 2 cm VLBA images of the inner radio jet of M87 showing a limb-brightened structure and unambiguous evidence for a faint 3 mas long counterfeature which also appears limb brightened. Multiepoch observations of seven separate jet features show typical speeds of less than a few percent of the speed of light, despite the highly asymmetric jet structure and the implications of the canonical relativistic beaming scenario. The observed morphology is consistent with a two-stream spine-sheath velocity gradient across the jet, as might be expected from the recently discovered strong and variable TeV emission as well as from …
