Ching Law Jan 2006

Ching Law

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Migrating Foreign Body In The Thyroid Gland, An Unusual Case, Tatheer Zohra, Mubasher Ikram, Moghira Iqbal, Shabbir Akhtar, Seyed Akbar Abbas Jan 2006

Migrating Foreign Body In The Thyroid Gland, An Unusual Case, Tatheer Zohra, Mubasher Ikram, Moghira Iqbal, Shabbir Akhtar, Seyed Akbar Abbas

Section of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery

In literature various cases have been described where foreign bodies ingested were lodged in the upper aero digestive tract, but only few of these foreign bodies perforate the oesophagus and an even fewer migrate extraluminally.1 If untreated, they may result in life threatening suppurative or vascular complications. Exploration of the neck via an external approach to remove the foreign body is the recommended treatment. The CT scan utilizing fine cuts is invaluable in localizing the foreign body for exploration. Oesophageal penetration and migration of oesophageal foreign bodies into the thyroid gland is extremely rare with only occasional case reports appearing …

Effects Of Dietary Carbohyd Rate On Weight Gain And Gonad Production In Juvenile Sea Urchins, Lytechinus Variegatus, Anna M. Taylor Jan 2006

Effects Of Dietary Carbohyd Rate On Weight Gain And Gonad Production In Juvenile Sea Urchins, Lytechinus Variegatus, Anna M. Taylor

All ETDs from UAB

Formulated feeds that support weight gain and survival in juvenile sea urchins are necessary for successful sea urchin aquaculture. In Chapter 1, juvenile Lytechinus variegatus were fed ad libitum one of four experimental feeds: 1) mixed-taxa algal biofilm (MTAB), 2) freeze-dried MTAB, 3) a commercial, small mammal feed (Friskies® cat treats), or 4) a commercial, formulated feed for sea urchins. The MTAB and sea urchin feed supported weight gain and survival, suggesting that juveniles as small as 3 to 4 mm can utilize formulated feeds for growth. In Chapter 2, juvenile Lytechinus variegatus were fed ad libitum one of five …

Design Of Randomly Placed Microphone Array, Srichandana Jasti Jan 2006

Design Of Randomly Placed Microphone Array, Srichandana Jasti

All ETDs from UAB

Microphone arrays can be employed in noise and vibration analysis to detect and analyze changes in noise sources. One weakness of microphone arrays is the presence of artifacts (ghost sounds not present in the true signal) caused by the array geometry. Previous researchers have attempted to move the microphones around their original array positions (moving over a small amount from the current position) to distinguish the presence of true noise sources from artifacts. While these methods have shown promise, the original authors have hypothesized that the best method would be to randomly move the microphones around their respective positions. This …

Stem Cells, Tgf-Ss, And The Adenoviral Mediated Overexpression Of Fibromodulin To Promo Te Incisional Wound Healing, Steven T. Moore Jan 2006

Stem Cells, Tgf-Ss, And The Adenoviral Mediated Overexpression Of Fibromodulin To Promo Te Incisional Wound Healing, Steven T. Moore

All ETDs from UAB

Incision wounds are a clinical problem due to insufficient strength with cosmeti-cally and functionally unacceptable scarring. The primary goals of therapy are increasing the rate of tissue repair and reducing scar stiffness. Assessment of the wounds is neces-sary to determine the state of the tissue in terms of strength, stiffness, and function as well as to compare the efficacy of various treatments and therapies. Mechanical testing can reveal both the speed in which a wound is healing in addition to the amount of scar-ring that is present in a wound. Presently, mesenchymal stem cells have shown potential to heal injured …

The Architecture And Iconography Of The Hindu Temple In Eads, Tennessee, Adrian Greville Smythies Jan 2006

The Architecture And Iconography Of The Hindu Temple In Eads, Tennessee, Adrian Greville Smythies

All ETDs from UAB

Many Hindu temples have been built in the United States over the last thirty years. While the sociological reasons for this phenomenon have received scholarly attention, there is little published work on their architecture and iconography. My research redresses this by focusing on the architecture and iconography of the recently completed temple at Eads, Tennessee, selected because it was built to resemble traditional temples in south India. Eads was designed by a prolific Hindu temple architect and reflects current trends in American Hindu temple design. Specifically, this study identifies, analyses, and documents transformations from traditional temple design occurring in the …
