Incorporating Remote Sensing Information In Modeling House Values: A Regression Tree Approach, Danlin Yu, Changshan Wu Jan 2006

Incorporating Remote Sensing Information In Modeling House Values: A Regression Tree Approach, Danlin Yu, Changshan Wu

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper explores the possibility of incorporating remote sensing information in modeling house values in the City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. In particular, a Landsat ETM+ image was utilized to derive environmental characteristics, including the fractions of vegetation, impervious surface, and soil, with a linear spectral mixture analysis approach. These environmental characteristics, together with house structural attributes, were integrated to house value models. Two modeling techniques, a global OLS regression and a regression tree approach, were employed to build the relationship between house values and house structural and environmental characteristics. Analysis of results indicates that environmental characteristics generated from remote …

A Multigrid Method For Variable Coefficient Maxwell's Equations, Jim E. Jones, Barry Lee Jan 2006

A Multigrid Method For Variable Coefficient Maxwell's Equations, Jim E. Jones, Barry Lee

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a multigrid method for solving variable coefficient Maxwell's equations. The novelty in this method is the use of interpolation operators that do not produce multilevel commutativity complexes that lead to multilevel exactness. Rather, the effects of multilevel exactness are built into the level equations themselves-on the finest level using a discrete T -V formulation and on the coarser grids through the Galerkin coarsening procedure of a T - V formulation. These built-in structures permit the levelwise use of an effective hybrid smoother on the curl-free near-nullspace components and permit the development of interpolation operators for handling the …

Intergenerational Communication About African American Women's Health: The Sharing Of Health Messages Between Diabetic Mothers And Their Non-Diabetic Adult Daughters, Angela F. Cooke-Jackson Jan 2006

Intergenerational Communication About African American Women's Health: The Sharing Of Health Messages Between Diabetic Mothers And Their Non-Diabetic Adult Daughters, Angela F. Cooke-Jackson

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The prevalence of type II diabetes is high among African-American women but research that emphasizes black mothers and their adult daughters is rarely studied in social sciences or communication research. Though existing research addresses various domains of the mother-daughter relationship scant information addresses the significance of talk or the transmission of health information between African-American diabetic mothers and their non-diabetic adult daughters. For that reason, this dissertation investigates information sharing among a sample of African-American mothers with type II diabetes and their non-diabetic adult daughters. This study's two primary research objectives were to: 1. describe whether and how African-American type II …

Soybean Qtl For Yield And Yield Components Associated With Glycine Soja Alleles, Dandan Li Jan 2006

Soybean Qtl For Yield And Yield Components Associated With Glycine Soja Alleles, Dandan Li

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

USA soybean germplasm has a narrow genetic base that could be augmented by alleles from the wild species Glycine soja which positively influence agronomic traits. The objective of this study was to identify such alleles for yield and yield component QTL (quantitative trait loci). Two populations of 150 BC2F4 lines were generated from a mating between recurrent parent Glycine max 7499 and donor parent Glycine soja PI 245331 with one line in each population tracing back to the same BC2 plant. Population A was used for the QTL identification analysis and population B was used for the QTL verification test. …

Spectral Reflectance Of Canopies Of Rainfed And Subsurface Irrigated Alfalfa, Dennis Wayne Hancock

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The site-specific management of alfalfa has not been well-evaluated, despite the economic importance of this crop. The objectives of this work were to i) characterize the effects of soil moisture deficits on alfalfa and alfalfa yield components and ii) evaluate the use of canopy reflectance patterns in measuring treatment-induced differences in alfalfa yield. A randomized complete block design with five replicates of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) and rainfed treatments of alfalfa was established at the University of Kentucky Animal Research Center in 2003. Potassium, as KCl, was broadcast on split-plots on 1 October 2004 at 0, 112, 336, and 448 …

An Analysis And Policy Implications Of Comfort Levels Of Diverse Constituents With Reported Units For Blast Vibrations And Limits: Closing The Communication Gap, Braden Lusk Jan 2006

An Analysis And Policy Implications Of Comfort Levels Of Diverse Constituents With Reported Units For Blast Vibrations And Limits: Closing The Communication Gap, Braden Lusk

Doctoral Dissertations

"Differences exist between public perception of construction blasting and quarry blasting. In general, people are able to tolerate short term inconveniences much better than long term ones. Quarries and other long term mining operations utilizing blasting are coming under increasing public and legislative pressure in the United States. The question being posed for the blasting industry is, "Has our past haste in adopting complex scientific scales and units been detrimental to us?" In other words, are the most palatable things being reported? The goal of this dissertation is to determine whether current units create an atmosphere of discomfort among neighbors …

Adoption Consents: Legal Incentives For Best Practices, Elizabeth Samuels Jan 2006

Adoption Consents: Legal Incentives For Best Practices, Elizabeth Samuels

All Faculty Scholarship

When a state places its legal imprimatur on the unmaking of one family and the making of another, the state should insure to the greatest extent possible that all the individuals involved have followed or have been afforded the best practices that ethics and humanity demand. The Uniform Adoption Act sets out commonly accepted goals of state adoption laws, among them the goals of protecting minor children against unnecessary separation from their birth parents and of ensuring that a decision by a birth parent to relinquish a minor child and consent to the childs adoption is informed and voluntary. With …

Governance And The Religion Question: Voluntaryism, Disestablishment, And America's Church-State Proposition, Carl H. Esbeck Jan 2006

Governance And The Religion Question: Voluntaryism, Disestablishment, And America's Church-State Proposition, Carl H. Esbeck

Faculty Publications

The quandary over how to structure the relationship between religion and the civil state is an ancient one. From the perspective of political philosophy this is the religion question, and events over many centuries have proven that the answer is easy to get wrong. Religion, by its very definition, is the fixed point from which all else is surveyed. It is about ultimate matters, both micro and macro. Hence, religion addresses the irreducible core of personhood and its meaning, while at the same time religion embraces a worldview that transcends and encompasses everything else. Religion generates intense emotions that when …

Loss Of Escape-Related Giant Neurons In A Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Sandra Y. Espinoza, Lana Breen, Nisha Varghese, Zen Faulkes Jan 2006

Loss Of Escape-Related Giant Neurons In A Spiny Lobster, Panulirus Argus, Sandra Y. Espinoza, Lana Breen, Nisha Varghese, Zen Faulkes

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

When attacked, many decapod crustaceans perform tailflips, which are triggered by a neural circuit that includes lateral giant interneurons, medial giant interneurons, and fast flexor motor giant neurons (MoGs). Slipper lobsters (Scyllaridae) lack these giant neurons, and it has been hypothesized that behavioral (e.g., digging) and morphological (e.g., flattening and armor) specializations in this group caused the loss of escape-related giant neurons. To test this hypothesis, we examined a species of spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. Spiny lobsters belong to the sister taxon of the scyllarids, but they have a more crayfish-like morphology than scyllarids and were predicted to have escape-related …

Roles Of Intra-Fruit Oxygen And Carbon Dioxide In Controlling Pepper (Capsicum Annuum L.) Seed Development And Storage Reserve Deposition, J. Blasiak, Anxiu Kuang, Chakavak S. Farghangi, M. E. Musgrave

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

Seeds developing within a locular space inside hollow fruit experience chronic exposure to a unique gaseous environment. Using two pepper cultivars, `Triton' (sweet) and `PI 140367' (hot), we investigated how the development of seeds is affected by the gases surrounding them. The atmospheric composition of the seed environment was characterized during development by analysis of samples withdrawn from the fruit locule with a gas-tight syringe. As seed weight plateaued during development, the seed environment reached its lowest O2 concentration (19%) and highest CO2 concentration (3%). We experimentally manipulated the seed environment by passing different humidified gas mixtures through the fruit …
