Factors Associated With Prolonged Prehospital Delay Of African Americans With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Angela D. Banks, Kathleen Dracup Jan 2006

Factors Associated With Prolonged Prehospital Delay Of African Americans With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Angela D. Banks, Kathleen Dracup

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

BACKGROUND: Delays in seeking treatment for signs and symptoms of acute myocardial infarction are longer for African Americans than for whites.

OBJECTIVE: To determine factors associated with prolonged delay and the extent to which perceived racism influences prehospital delay in African Americans with acute myocardial infarction.

METHODS: Sixty-one African Americans with acute myocardial infarction were interviewed within 1 month of hospital admission. Delay times were calculated on the basis of the interviews. Independent t tests and chi(2) tests were used to determine factors associated with prolonged delays. RESULTS: Median delay was 4.25 hours and did not differ significantly between women …

Search For Gravitational Waves From Binary Black Hole Inspirals In Ligo Data, B. P. Abbott, R. Abbott, W. G. Anderson, Mario C. Diaz, Wm. R. Johnston, Soumya Mohanty, Soma Mukherjee, Cristina V. Torres

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report on a search for gravitational waves from binary black hole inspirals in the data from the second science run of the LIGO interferometers. The search focused on binary systems with component masses between 3 and 20M⊙. Optimally oriented binaries with distances up to 1 Mpc could be detected with efficiency of at least 90%. We found no events that could be identified as gravitational waves in the 385.6 hours of data that we searched.

Electrical Pulse Formation During High Temperature Reaction Between Ni And Al, Mona Setoodeh, Karen S. Martirosyan, Dan Luss Jan 2006

Electrical Pulse Formation During High Temperature Reaction Between Ni And Al, Mona Setoodeh, Karen S. Martirosyan, Dan Luss

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

An electric voltage pulse (duration of about 2ms) with an amplitude of up to 0.6V was generated during the reaction between nickel and aluminum powders by a high temperature moving reaction front. The electrical signal formed during the initial stages of the combustion was annihilated before the moving front attained its maximum temperature. The voltage amplitude and combustion temperature depended on the particle size of the reactants as well as the Al to Ni ratio in the reactant mixture, and their largest values were attained for a mixture containing 27–31.5wt% Al. The combustion temperature increased when smaller Al particles were …

Development And Application Of A Modis Snowmelt Model For Northwestern Montana, Jessica A. Bleha Jan 2006

Development And Application Of A Modis Snowmelt Model For Northwestern Montana, Jessica A. Bleha

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Bleha, Jessica, M.S., Autumn 2006 Geosciences Development and Application of a MODIS Driven Snowmelt Model in Northwestern Montana Chairperson: Joel T. Harper In the mountain west the timing of the spring snowmelt pulse has considerable impact on water resources and ecological processes such as fire. A forward shift of this timing due to warming climate has received considerable attention. The internal structure and physical processes of the mountain snowpack also have a large influence on the timing of spring runoff. Here we investigate controlling factors in the timing of the spring melt pulse in a large-scale northern Rockies watershed. We …

Shareholders' Agreements In Close Corporations And Their Enforcement, Ricardo Molano Leon

LLM Theses and Essays

Shareholders’ Agreements are contractual devices to manage tensions among shareholders of a corporation. These agreements have a wide scope related to shareholders’ interest. Nevertheless, before subscribing a shareholder agreement is important to determine the requirements to make it enforceable. This issue has been addressed in the last twenty years by state corporate statutes following the Model Business Corporation Act and the Delaware General Corporation Law and in different court decisions. Today, shareholders’ agreements will be enforced according to the terms defined by the parties unless the agreement injures non-participating shareholders, third parties or is against public policy.

Condemned By Birth: The Implications Of Genetics For The Theories Of Crime And Punishment, Meghna Rajadhyaksha

Socio-Legal Review

This article traces debates around relevance of genetics in determining culpability. The chief trends in this regard are illustrted by decisions of the American Courts over the past century, which have moved from applications of blind heredity to sophisticated molecular analyses. Since genetics impacts the basic assumption of "free will" in criminal law, its use as a defence has been examined at length. Finally, this article examines the methods and theories of punishment, and their effectiveness in preventing and penalizing the actions of "genetic offenders."

Are Advisers Contributing To Fund Rule Avalanche?, Tamar Frankel Jan 2006

Are Advisers Contributing To Fund Rule Avalanche?, Tamar Frankel

Shorter Faculty Works

The SEC has been prolific in the past few years. By its own initiative, or because of congressional directives, the Commission has issued a record number of rules directed at the mutual funds advisory profession.

From 1975 to 2000 the SEC enacted about 135 substantive rules. However, it has enacted 70 such rules over the five-year span from 2001 to 2006. These rules are progressively more specific, eliminating flexibility, putting the profession in a straight-jacket, and imposing significant costs. The costs of these rules are especially irritating to advisors who have done no wrong.

Professional advisors blame the SEC for …

Using System Dynamics Approach To Construct A Performance Measurement Model For Pharmacy Supply Chain Management, Jiinpo Wu, Charlie C. Chen, Ray Tsai

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

A credible performance measurement system is imperative to evaluate SCM systems effectiveness. However, commonly accepted measurements for evaluating pharmacy supply chain management (SCM) are yet to be developed. This study models the dynamic behavior of pharmacy supply chains to include managerial policies and performance measuring systems based on a well-established theoretical framework. The system dynamics methodology is adopted to simulate three scenarios: (1) demand forecasting policy, (2) market need, and (3) manufacturing errors. Simulation results lead to important policy implications of pharmacy SCM.

Development Of A Risk Assessment Model For Global Information Technology Outsourcing, June Wei, Brian Peach Jan 2006

Development Of A Risk Assessment Model For Global Information Technology Outsourcing, June Wei, Brian Peach

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Global Information Technology (IT) outsourcing has been recognized to have important potential benefits. However, researchers and practitioners also recognize potential risks involved in global IT outsourcing, which sometimes lead to undesirable consequences. This paper develops a model to assess risks in global IT outsourcing. Specifically, this paper begins by identifying global IT outsourcing risk factors by considering the national infrastructure, organizational infrastructure, and project environment. Second, a Global IT Outsourcing (GITO) engagement model for risk assessment is developed to logically link all these risk factors together. Third, one quantifiable approach based on a relative-weighted assessment model is presented to demonstrate …

What The Shutts Opt-Out Right Is And What It Ought To Be, Alan B. Morrison

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article discusses the ramifications of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Phillips Petrolem v. Shutts, 472 U.S. 797 (1985), regarding the right of an absent class member to opt out of a class action. The article addresses both the current prevailing understanding of Shutts, which is based on the personal jurisdiction strain of due process jurisprudence, and what the authors believe is a more useful understanding, based on the property rights strain of due process jurisprudence. As an addendum to the article, the authors propose a new civil procedure rule governing class actions that would implement their ideas about …
