Building And Sustaining Success: Emotional, Social And Cognitive Competencies That Predict Management Performance In A Financial Sales Setting. A Qualitative Study, Raymond Massa Nov 2006

Building And Sustaining Success: Emotional, Social And Cognitive Competencies That Predict Management Performance In A Financial Sales Setting. A Qualitative Study, Raymond Massa

Student Scholarship

This paper examines the emotional, social and cognitive competencies that predict performance of a financial sales branch and its Financial Advisors. The focus--the unit of analysis--of this study is the Branch Manager. It is hypothesized that the Branch Manager, through a set of emotional, social and cognitive competencies, can, as a leader, influence better overall results. The research presented in this paper is a qualitative study that compares and contrasts both Outstanding Branch managers and Typical Branch Managers. It does this in two ways: by identifying those competencies that differentiate Outstanding from Typical Branch Managers; and by identifying the effects …

The Fat Cadherin Acts Through The Hippo Tumor-Suppressor Pathway To Regulate Tissue Size, Maria Willecke, Fisun Hamaratoglu, Madhuri Kango-Singh, Ryan Udan, Chiao-Lin Chen, Chunyao Tao, Xinwei Zhang, Georg Halder

Biology Faculty Publications

Background: The Hippo tumor-suppressor pathway has emerged as a key signaling pathway that controls tissue size in Drosophila. Merlin, the Drosophila homolog of the human Neurofibromatosis type-2 (NF2) tumor-suppressor gene, and the related protein Expanded are the most upstream components of the Hippo pathway identified so far. However, components acting upstream of Expanded and Merlin, such as transmembrane receptors, have not yet been identified.

Results: Here, we report that the protocadherin Fat acts as an upstream component in the Hippo pathway. Fat is a known tumor-suppressor gene in Drosophila, and fat mutants have severely overgrown imaginal discs. We …

Compulsive Talkers: Perceptions Of Over Talkers Within The Workplace, Jason R. Axsom Nov 2006

Compulsive Talkers: Perceptions Of Over Talkers Within The Workplace, Jason R. Axsom

Student Work

Compulsive talkers have been the focus o f limited communication studies, and those that have been written addressed the need for defining and identifying those considered to be over communicators. To date, no recorded studies has investigated the potentially negative impact compulsive talkers could have on those that work with them. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and reactions of interactants with compulsive talkers in the workplace. Interviews with coworkers of compulsive talkers were conducted to determine their perceptions of these over talkers and their attributes. From these interviews, four distinct patterns emerged. Overall, compulsive talkers …

Problem-Solving Model Of Design With A Controllable Determinization Level, Sonya S. Kwak, Myung-Suk Kim Nov 2006

Problem-Solving Model Of Design With A Controllable Determinization Level, Sonya S. Kwak, Myung-Suk Kim

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The objective of this study is to develop a problem-solving model of design with a controllable determinization level which satisfies both analytic and synthetic aspects of design activities. Rooted on the problem-solution duality model, a goal-oriented problem-solving model, which is based on the triad relationship among a problem, a solution, and a goal, is constructed. In the problem-solving model of design, the goal area is distinguished from the solution area, and the concept of “determinization” which is the process of transforming the indeterminate solution area into the quasi-determinate2 goal area is established. The determinization level controls the portion between discovery …

The Designed Object That We Know And See, D. M. Büchler, M. A. R Biggs Nov 2006

The Designed Object That We Know And See, D. M. Büchler, M. A. R Biggs

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses perception of the designed object and how our knowledge impacts on our visual perception of that designed object. It expands on the notion of interpretation both in the context of material culture and in the context of psychology. It explains how the approach to interpretation in both disciplines relies on an active observer/perceiver. The issue of perception of the designed object is approached using the theories of the perceptual psychologist Richard L. Gregory. His work is shown to be especially relevant because there is a degree of commonality between his view of interpretation and that of material …

Research Design In Design Research: A Practical Framework To Develop Theory From Case Studies, S Roworth-Stokes Nov 2006

Research Design In Design Research: A Practical Framework To Develop Theory From Case Studies, S Roworth-Stokes

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Case studies have for a long time been used in design research to provide ‘rich’ insight into successful or unsuccessful new product innovation. As a methodology it has often been cited as useful to derive site specific contexts where phenomena can be observed and reported by respondents in their working environment. Yet, in practice, the primary advantage of the design case study, its ability to reveal insight into ‘real-life’ contemporary phenomena (the here and now), set against a backdrop of critical incidents, happenings or events over time (temporality), often become it’s weakness in achieving valid and credible findings. Essentially it …

Design For Dynamic Use Situations, First Steps In The Development Of A Design Method That Supports Designing For Dynamic Use Situations, M. Brouwer, M.C. Van Der Voort Nov 2006

Design For Dynamic Use Situations, First Steps In The Development Of A Design Method That Supports Designing For Dynamic Use Situations, M. Brouwer, M.C. Van Der Voort

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Products that are used in a dynamic situation are difficult to design with regard to usability. A dynamic use situation is a situation in which a product is used by various people, with different goals and/ or in different contexts of use. Since the use situation influences a product’s usability, a dynamic use situation can complicate the design process. We therefore propose to develop a new method to support the designer in dealing with dynamic use situations. The first step in this process is the definition of criteria for this design method. We distinguish criteria that concern analysis and evaluation …

How Can Stories Get Translated Into Future Artefacts?, Bo Westerlund Nov 2006

How Can Stories Get Translated Into Future Artefacts?, Bo Westerlund

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper discusses a workshop method suitable for use in projects with a participatory design approach. Participatory design is sometimes criticised for focussing too much on what users say. The method described here takes that into account by having users not only talk, but also do acting and make lo-fi prototypes. The method has been used in several different projects. The structure of the workshops is designed to enable the participants to express themselves by saying, doing and making. People express different aspects through different channels and by enabling people to express themselves not only by talking but also by …

Referencing The Sociocultural During Designing, Mk Strickfaden, P Rodgers, P Langdon Nov 2006

Referencing The Sociocultural During Designing, Mk Strickfaden, P Rodgers, P Langdon

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The development of an artefact is inherently bound up with meanings, relationships, and value systems relative to the individuals creating them, and to the context of their immediate and external environments. This paper begins to explore the sociocultural affects on the design process through two field studies within two industrial design education studios. Two separate design groups and projects are followed for extended periods of time in order to collect naturally occurring ‘references’. These are analyzed revealing central themes and categories that are presented here as indicators of the varying context of artefact design. In doing so, a model called …

Testing And Evaluation Of Light Gauge Steel Frame / 9.5 Mm Csp Wood Panel Shear Walls, David Rokas Nov 2006

Testing And Evaluation Of Light Gauge Steel Frame / 9.5 Mm Csp Wood Panel Shear Walls, David Rokas

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

The use of light gauge steel framing elements sheathed with wood plywood or oriented strand board are becoming more common in the construction of structural shear walls for low-rise platform frame structural systems in Canada. Canadian standards and codes do not currently outline design methods for this type of wall system. Therefore, research at McGill University is underway to help develop design parameters for seismic and wind loading that can be used in conjunction with the 2005 National Building Code of Canada for this type of shear wall system. The research is based on the monotonic and reversed cyclic testing …

Humidification Factors From Laboratory Studies Of Fresh Smoke From Biomass Fuels, D. E. Day, J. L. Hand, C. M. Carrico, Guenter Engling, W. C. Malm Nov 2006

Humidification Factors From Laboratory Studies Of Fresh Smoke From Biomass Fuels, D. E. Day, J. L. Hand, C. M. Carrico, Guenter Engling, W. C. Malm

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements of smoke aerosol humidification factors were performed in a laboratory for different biomass fuel types and burn conditions. Two nephelometers simultaneously measured dry and humidified light scattering coefficients (bsp(dry) and bsp(RH), respectively), providing the first observations of the temporal evolution of the humidification factor (f(RH) = bsp(RH)/bsp(dry)) for fresh (minutes-old) smoke. Hygroscopic characteristics of the smoke aerosols varied with fuel type and fire conditions, with the mean f(RH) ranging from 1.01 to 1.95 for fresh minutes-old smoke for the relative humidity (RH) range of 70-94%. These f(RH) values exhibited temporal variability, with some fuels alternating from hygroscopic to nonhygroscopic …

Management And Self-Activity: Accounting For The Crisis In Profit-Taking, Stefano Harney Nov 2006

Management And Self-Activity: Accounting For The Crisis In Profit-Taking, Stefano Harney

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The crisis in measurement identified by those working in the tradition of Italian autonomia has consequences for the critique of accounting and management. If both capitalist work and the commodity are today communicative and overtly political, a critique that merely points to these characteristics will have no transformative effect. This paper uses the Trinidadian Marxist theorist C.L.R. James’s notion of self-activity to suggest that the crisis in measurement is a symptom of the separation of work and value. The institution of forms of self-management and what might be called wars of command begin to replace the governmentality of the wage …

Lobe And Serrate Are Required For Cell Survival During Early Eye Development In Drosophila, Amit Singh, Xiao Shi, Kwang-Wook Choi Nov 2006

Lobe And Serrate Are Required For Cell Survival During Early Eye Development In Drosophila, Amit Singh, Xiao Shi, Kwang-Wook Choi

Biology Faculty Publications

Organogenesis involves an initial surge of cell proliferation, leading to differentiation. This is followed by cell death in order to remove extra cells. During early development, there is little or no cell death. However, there is a lack of information concerning the genes required for survival during the early cell-proliferation phase. Here, we show that Lobe (L) and the Notch (N) ligand Serrate (Ser), which are both involved in ventral eye growth, are required for cell survival in the early eye disc. We observed that the loss-of-ventral-eye phenotype in L or Ser mutants is due to …

What We Don't Know Can Help Us: Eliciting Out-Of-Discipline Knowledge For Work With Intractable Conflicts, Jennifer Goldman, Peter T. Coleman Nov 2006

What We Don't Know Can Help Us: Eliciting Out-Of-Discipline Knowledge For Work With Intractable Conflicts, Jennifer Goldman, Peter T. Coleman

Peace and Conflict Studies

In this article, the authors present the results of a study in which a diverse variety of experts in fields outside the traditional conflict domain were interviewed about their ideas regarding intractable conflicts. The purpose of this study was to gather frame-breaking insights and practical approaches that could shed new light on complex, persistent conflict that has been particularly resistant to resolution. The authors argue that outsiders to the field are more likely to provide fresh perspective and radical approaches to the conflict field’s most intransigent problems because they are not constrained by the field’s pre-existing normative frames. This article …

Power Purchase Agreements For Small Power Producers, Steven Ferrey, Anil Cabraal Nov 2006

Power Purchase Agreements For Small Power Producers, Steven Ferrey, Anil Cabraal

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Five Asian nations, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam began designing or instituting Small Power Producer (SPP) programs in the mid-1990s to support energy development jointly with the private sector. This note draws on important markers and lessons for other countries on how to implement similar programs based on these experiences. While all Asian programs demonstrate certain commonalities due to fundamental legal relationships, each experience has been tailored to local conditions and requirements. Some have introduced innovative bidding, competitive, or incentive structures. The result is a rich palette of experience with small power projects in Asia.
