Gender Differences In American Children's Oral Narratives, Nadezda M. Zernova
Gender Differences In American Children's Oral Narratives, Nadezda M. Zernova
Graduate Research Papers
Gender differences exist among different aspects of children's development (such as social, cognitive, and emotional). Children's narratives have been used as a common assessment tool (Libby & Aries, 1989; Wang & Leichtman, 2000) to learn more about gender differences. Knowledge of existing differences enables educators to individualize their teaching for boys and girls in order to benefit their development. The present study focused on gender differences in the following areas of American children's oral narratives: characters, emotional tone, structure, content, and language. The participants of the study were 14 kindergarteners and first-graders (7 boys and 7 girls) between ages 6 …

Using American Library Association's Current Notable Literature For Younger And Middle Readers To Help Enhance The 6 + 1 Trait Writing™ Model In The Elementary Classroom, Debra Zwank
Graduate Research Papers
This study recognized that teachers perform under an incredible amount of stress daily. They feel overcome at the end of each day by stress and high expectations placed upon them for their students to achieve (Black, 2003, p. 37). In addition, the study showed that reading aloud was an important component in helping students become excited about reading and writing. Furthermore, research shows teachers need to help students make connections between what the teacher shares as a read-aloud and what is being taught in the classroom. Therefore, the media specialist is there to help teachers make the connection between award-winning …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the general population's understanding and views of forgiveness and to examine if gender was a factor related to one's understanding of forgiveness and motivation to forgive. In this study, structured interviews were administered which allowed a focus on the personal views and experiences of forgiveness and descriptive statistics were used to explain the common patterns in responses among the participants. Forty-nine participants, ranging in ages from 15 to 54, were selected to be interviewed on their views and practice of forgiveness. Of the 49 participants, 15 were males and 34 were females.
Attributing Success And Failure : Attribution Theory At Work, Ellen M. Shay
Attributing Success And Failure : Attribution Theory At Work, Ellen M. Shay
Graduate Research Papers
Attribution Theory demonstrates how people can appropriately attribute success and failure. Teachers must learn how to help students handle their successes and, perhaps more importantly, their failures. If teachers are not successful in this endeavor, the students will not succeed in a traditional school setting.

Double-Trouble: The Underregulation Of Surreptitious Video Surveillance In Conjunction With The Use Of Snitches In Domestic Government Investigations, Mona R. Shokrai
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
Technological advancements in digital imagery and visual recordings have all but vitiated any expectation of privacy in public places. Yet this Orwellian state of constant governmental surveillance has extended beyond the scope of public observation. Closely-held expectations of privacy in the most intimate locations have also become subject to government observation. The means by which the government is able to garner such detailed information concerning the minutiae of our private lives is in need of assessment.

Heat/Mass Transfer In Rotating, Smooth, High Aspect-Ratio (4:1) Coolant Channels With Curved Walls, Eashwar Sethuraman
LSU Master's Theses
The thesis presents an experimental study of heat/mass transfer coefficient in 4:1 aspect ratio smooth channels with non-uniform cross-sections. Curved leading and trailing edges are studied, for two curvatures of 9.06 m-1 (0.23 in-1) and 15.11 m-1 (0.384 in-1) and for two different curvature configurations. One configuration has curved walls with curvature corresponding to the blade profile (positive curvature on both leading and trailing walls), and the other configuration has leading and trailing walls that curve inwards into the coolant passage (negative curvature on the leading surface and positive curvature on the trailing surface). The experiments are conducted in a …
The Electronic Recording Of Criminal Interrogations, Roberto Iraola
The Electronic Recording Of Criminal Interrogations, Roberto Iraola
University of Richmond Law Review
Should law enforcement officers be required to record, by video or audiotape, custodial interrogations of suspects? If so, how much, the entire interrogation or just the confession? Many prosecutors and police departments maintain that a recording requirement will hamper law enforcement and discourage suspects from talking. Proponents of this measure argue that the recording of interrogations protects against false confessions, augments the effective administration of justice, and serves to improve the relationship between the public and the police.
This article generally examines the developing case law on this question. Because of the incriminating nature of confessions, the article, by way …
The Modern Age Of Informed Consent, Barbara L. Atwell
The Modern Age Of Informed Consent, Barbara L. Atwell
University of Richmond Law Review
This essay explores the informed consent ramifications of the confluence of these two phenomena: developments in medical technology and emerging adulthood. In particular, it explores consent to medical treatments by emerging adults that are both elective and irreversible. In such cases, policy considerations dictate that additional safeguards be implemented to ensure that the consent given is truly informed. Part II of this essay provides an overview of the informed consent doctrine and outlines a variety of advancements in elective medical technology. Part III explores the concept of emerging adulthood. Part IV suggests that when emerging adults seek medical treatments that …
Undeserving Heirs?--The Case Of The "Terminated" Parent, Richard Lewis Brown
Undeserving Heirs?--The Case Of The "Terminated" Parent, Richard Lewis Brown
University of Richmond Law Review
Every state has an intestate succession statute that prescribes how the property of those who die without a will should be distributed. Every state also by statute authorizes the government to intervene in the parent-child relationship in the most draconian manner possible by involuntarily terminating parental rights. This article explores how the law functions at the intersection of these two statutory schemes-the inheritance regime, as expressed through intestate succession statutes, and the child welfare regime, as expressed through termination of parental rights statutes ("TPR statutes").
Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activity Of Oat Bran By Various Extraction Methods, Darryl Lourey Holliday
Phenolic Compounds And Antioxidant Activity Of Oat Bran By Various Extraction Methods, Darryl Lourey Holliday
LSU Master's Theses
Recent studies have suggested that the health promoting capabilities of oats are due to its antioxidants (tocopherols, tocotrienols, and sterols) found within the bran along with phenolic compounds, such as avenanthramides, p-hydroxybenoic acid and vanillic acid. Long-chain fatty acid oxidation is directly responsible for most off-flavors in food. Since oat bran is a good source of antioxidants, a concentrated extract could be used as a natural preservative, for foods rich in unsaturated long-chain fatty acids. Three methods, traditional solvent (TSE), microwave-assisted solvent (MAS), and supercritical fluid treatment (SFT), were used to obtain the extracts. One extraction temperature in TSE, 60°C, …

Maximizing Resource Utilization By Slicing Of Superscalar Architecture, Shruti Ravikant Patil
Maximizing Resource Utilization By Slicing Of Superscalar Architecture, Shruti Ravikant Patil
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Superscalar architectural techniques increase instruction throughput from one instruction per cycle to more than one instruction per cycle. Modern processors make use of several processing resources to achieve this kind of throughput. Control units perform various functions to minimize stalls and to ensure a continuous feed of instructions to execution units. It is vital to ensure that instructions ready for execution do not encounter a bottleneck in the execution stage; This thesis work proposes a dynamic scheme to increase efficiency of execution stage by a methodology called block slicing. Implementing this concept in a wide, superscalar pipelined architecture introduces minimal …

Effect Of Low Level Laser Therapy On Migration Of Human Skin Cells Across A Standardized Wound, Kathleen Orzechowski
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects that different dosages of low level laser therapy have on human skin cell migration. Normal newborn foreskin fibroblasts were seeded into a four well chamber microscope slide. Cellular monolayers were inflicted with three standardized wounds per well. Following the wounding of cells, each well received low level laser therapy once from a 635 nm laser at one of four treatment dosages (0.0 J/cm 2, 1.0 J/cm2, 1.5 J/cm2, 2.0 J/cm 2) with a power output of 11.5 mW. Digital images were recorded immediately following wounding, and every hour thereafter for …
Internet Utilization As A Medium For Training Employees In Multi-Unit Restaurants, Dipendra Singh
Internet Utilization As A Medium For Training Employees In Multi-Unit Restaurants, Dipendra Singh
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Employee turnovers costs for multi-unit restaurant companies amount to millions of dollars each year. A large amount is spent on training new employees, so that the service and product standards can be maintained throughout the outlets. However, very little attention is being paid to the Internet as an efficient and cost effective medium for training employees; The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between multi-unit restaurant companies and their current and perceived future Internet usage for employee training. Multi-unit restaurant companies with different annual revenues were categorized and examined for the extent of Internet usage in training; …
A Comparative Study Of Personality Traits Between Video Poker And Traditional Pull/Push Machines Players, Jungjin Hwang
A Comparative Study Of Personality Traits Between Video Poker And Traditional Pull/Push Machines Players, Jungjin Hwang
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Since the first spinning-reel slot machine was invented in 1895 by a German-born mechanic and installed in San Francisco taverns (Span 2003), machine games have enjoyed popularity among gamblers. Two main types of slot machines dominate the market: video poker machines, and the more traditional pull/push machines. Previous research suggests that video poker players and pull/push slot gamblers have different motivations for playing. In our study we looked at whether or not video poker and slot players have different personality traits as measured through Cattell's 16 Personality Factors. The findings showed that video poker players presented a more dominant personality …
