Handling The Subclassing Anomaly With Object Teams, Jeff Furlong, Atanas Radenski Jan 2006

Handling The Subclassing Anomaly With Object Teams, Jeff Furlong, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Existing Java software or libraries can evolve via subclassing. Unfortunately, subclassing may not properly support code adaptation when there are dependencies between classes. More precisely, subclassing in collections of related classes may require reimplementation of otherwise valid classes. This problem is defined as the subclassing anomaly, which is an issue when software evolution or code reuse is a goal of the programmer who is using existing classes. Object Teams offers an implicit fix to this problem and is largely compatible with the existing JVM’s. In this paper, we evaluate how well Object Teams succeeds in providing a solution for a …

Review Of Optional Law: The Structure Of Legal Entitlements, Omri Ben-Shahar Jan 2006

Review Of Optional Law: The Structure Of Legal Entitlements, Omri Ben-Shahar

Reviews

The concept of "property rights" plays a prominent role in economic theory. Economists have been studying how property rights emerged as a system of allocation, replacing regimes of open access and lack of legal order. Property rights are regularly viewed by economists as the primary policy tool to control the incentives to invest in new assets (e.g., in information) and to maintain existing assets (e.g., fisheries) when contracts are incomplete. Property rights are the endowments that individuals exchange in a market economy, the equity that investors trade in financial markets. Property rights are a basic building block in economics.

Harmful Tax Competition And Its Harmful Remedies, James R. Hines Jr. Jan 2006

Harmful Tax Competition And Its Harmful Remedies, James R. Hines Jr.

Reviews

There is, among some of your reviewer's friends, an abhorrence of tax competition, and a fascination with tax harmonization, that defies simple understanding. The way that the case is typically presented, European tax harmonization is desirable because eliminating tax differences between European nations would promote economic efficiency. With greater economic efficiency, there is more of everything to go around, so it becomes possible to maintain life exactly as it currently is, except that now, instead of every family having one toaster, they can have two. A wise goal, a worthy goal, this economic efficiency-though the drive to eke more out …

Law's Own Ontology: A Comment On Law's Quandary, Jospeh Vining Jan 2006

Law's Own Ontology: A Comment On Law's Quandary, Jospeh Vining

Reviews

This is the last sentence of Steven Smith's elegant book, Law's Quandary: "[I]n the meantime.., we would perhaps be wise to confess our confusion and to acknowledge that there are richer realities and greater powers in the universe than our meager modern philosophies have dreamed of."

Forum, Donald J. Herzog Jan 2006

Forum, Donald J. Herzog

Reviews

Psst: here’s my secret wry suspicion. Political theorists are allergic to facts. They feel entitled to firm beliefs—about state-building, modernization, the rise of the bourgeoisie, you name it—because they’ve read some fancy theory books. So a lot of theory reads like a conceptual shell game, with various intoxicating abstractions shuffled about. I’m enough of a vulgar pragmatist to think that theory isn’t what you get when you leave out the facts. So I found Wahrman’s Making of the Modern Self sheer joy, from start to finish. The bottom line first: this is a mustread across the humanities and humanistic social …

What We Know, And What We Should Know About American Trial Trends, Margo Schlanger Jan 2006

What We Know, And What We Should Know About American Trial Trends, Margo Schlanger

Articles

More than a few people noticed that the American court system was seeing ever fewer trials before Marc Galanter named the phenomenon.' But until Galanter mobilized lawyers2 and scholars to look systematically at the issue, inquiry was both piecemeal and sparse. Over the past three years, in contrast, Galanter's research 3 and his idea entrepreneurship, crystallized in the "Vanishing Trial" label, has spawned if not a huge literature at least a substantial one. We have now gotten the benefit of sustained scholarly inquiry by researchers of many stripes. Their work has been largely, though not entirely, empirical, and so we …

Understanding The Dehumidification Performance Of Air-Conditioning Equipment At Part-Load Conditions, Florida Solar Energy Center, Don B. Shirey Iii Jan 2006

Understanding The Dehumidification Performance Of Air-Conditioning Equipment At Part-Load Conditions, Florida Solar Energy Center, Don B. Shirey Iii

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Air conditioner cooling coils typically provide both sensible cooling and moisture removal. Data from a limited number of field studies (Khattar et al. 1985; Henderson and Rengarajan 1996; Henderson 1998) have demonstrated that the moisture removal capacity of a cooling coil degrades at part-load conditions - especially when the supply fan operates continuously while the cooling coil cycles on and off. Degradation occurs because moisture that condenses on the coil surfaces during the cooling cycle evaporates back into air stream when the coil is off. This degradation affects the ability of cooling equipment to maintain proper indoor humidity levels and …

Riding The Hyphen: Derrida-Woolf, Andrea L. Yates Jan 2006

Riding The Hyphen: Derrida-Woolf, Andrea L. Yates

Open Access Dissertations

Riding the Hyphen forms a deconstructive conversation that features Derrida, Woolf, and a host of other modern and contemporary thinkers, including Martin Heidegger, and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak. In the first chapter, "The Religion Question: When Faith Encounters Critique," I examine the ways in which both Woolf and Derrida dissolve the dichotomy between faith and critical thought in order to arrive at a purer and more productive mode of critique. The second chapter, "Being and Sacrifice," in which I theorize and ontology of sacrifice, argues, with recourse to Heidegger, for a secularized understanding of "spirit" that maintains the play between the …

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion And Titanate Conversion Coatings On Aluminum Alloy 2024-T3, Hong Cai Jan 2006

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion And Titanate Conversion Coatings On Aluminum Alloy 2024-T3, Hong Cai

Open Access Dissertations

Due to its poor corrosion resistance, Aluminum alloy 2024-T3 has been targeted to study corrosion mechanisms and protection strategies. The present study has two areas of focus: (1) the effects of aquatic microorganisms on corrosion, and (2) the surface-cleaning step in the conversion coating process. Microorganisms and biofilms on solid surface can be found almost in any natural aqueous environments. So far, microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), or biocorrosion, has been poorly understood. A comparative study on the corrosion of aluminum alloy 2024-T3 was conducted in either plain seawater or nutrient-rich ZoBell 2216 medium, and with or without the marine bacterium …

Sexual Identity Construction Among Lesbian, Bisexual And Unlabeled Women, Kelly Brooks Jan 2006

Sexual Identity Construction Among Lesbian, Bisexual And Unlabeled Women, Kelly Brooks

Open Access Dissertations

Current research and theory regarding women's experience of sexuality depict more flexibility and variability in sexual identity development and self-labeling than generally accounted for in traditional sexual identity models. The present study examined lesbian and bisexual women's use of sexual identity labels, attitudes about sexual fluidity and self-labeling, and patterns associated with sexual identity processes. Two hundred nineteen women with same-sex attractions or experiences participated in the study, completing an anonymous online survey. The majority of participants (85.4%) identified as White, with ages ranging from 18 to 69. One hundred eighteen women identified as lesbian, 59 as bisexual, 5 as …

Exploring The Experiences Of Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Adolescents In School: Lessons For School Psychologists, Marjorie Cooper-Nicols Jan 2006

Exploring The Experiences Of Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Adolescents In School: Lessons For School Psychologists, Marjorie Cooper-Nicols

Open Access Dissertations

This study utilized modified grounded theory methodology with gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) adolescents to explore three research questions: (1) How have schools responded to GLB youth? (2) What are some of the factors that help or hinder development of a healthy sexual identity for GLB adolescents? and (3) How does being involved in a community GLB youth organization impact GLB youth? Prior research has demonstrated that schools are often hostile environments for GLB youth. With little recognition and support, GLB adolescents are a group at risk for depression, suicide, substance abuse, violence, and school failure. Participants in this study …

Manatee Response To Environmental Noise, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds Jan 2006

Manatee Response To Environmental Noise, Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds

Open Access Dissertations

The most pressing concerns associated with conservation of the endangered Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) include habitat alteration and mortality caused by humans. Whereas considerable research has focused on manatee mortality associated with watercraft collisions, little attention has been paid to the impacts of noise created by watercraft. Potential effects of environmental noise on the habitat selection, distribution, and behavior of manatees are the foci of this dissertation, the primary goal of which was to understand and predict manatee behavior patterns as a function of environmental noise levels in the Sarasota Bay area. Manatee behavior was examined in terms of: …

Evaluation Of Potential Multi-Particulate Drug Delivery Systems, Aruna Mummini Murty Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Potential Multi-Particulate Drug Delivery Systems, Aruna Mummini Murty

Open Access Dissertations

Multi-particulate tablets have the advantages of pellets and those of tablets. Formulation studies were performed on pellets using the granulation-extrusion-spheronization technique. The objective was to manufacture pellets of good quality with a high drug load and requisite dissolution rates. Inclusion of Ac-Di-Sol (cross linked sodium carboxymethylcellulose) increased the dissolution rate of drugs from clarithromycin and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride pellets. Surfactants such as cremophor (polyoxyl 35 castor oil) improved wetting of the drug and aided in the extrusion process. A major problem in compaction of coated pellets is that the coating can rupture on compaction, this results in significant differences in dissolution …

Youth At Risk For Alcohol Use And Smoking: A Longitudinal Examination Of Profiles Of Prevention, Andrea Eastwood Paiva Jan 2006

Youth At Risk For Alcohol Use And Smoking: A Longitudinal Examination Of Profiles Of Prevention, Andrea Eastwood Paiva

Open Access Dissertations

The current study was designed to examine the Profiles of Prevention among non-drinking and non-smoking adolescents. Research across age groups (elementary, middle and high school), populations (U.S., U.K., and Israel), and substances (tobacco, alcohol and other drugs) has consistently identified four profiles of non-users who vary in their risks for substance use: (1) Most Protected from substance use; (2) Most Tempted to use substances; (3) Most Negative about staying substance free; and (4) Least Positive about being substance free. These profiles have demonstrated both internal and external validity in cross-sectional data. This longitudinal research focuses on students who remain substance …

"Defining A New Normal": An Exploration Of Psychosocial Adjustment In Young Adult Survivors Of Adolescent Cancer, Kristen J. Quinlan Jan 2006

"Defining A New Normal": An Exploration Of Psychosocial Adjustment In Young Adult Survivors Of Adolescent Cancer, Kristen J. Quinlan

Open Access Dissertations

Psycho-oncology has been limited by inconsistent definitions of adjustment, leading to inconsistent information about the correlates of adjustment among adult survivors of pediatric cancer. Further, adolescent survivors are seldom broken out for special analysis, even though there are vast medical and developmental differences between those diagnosed during adolescence and those diagnosed at a younger age. The current study utilized a mixed method approach examine adjustment with 7 female and 5 male survivors of cancer who were diagnosed during adolescence. Thematic analysis revealed that adjustment is the process of changing one's perspective or redefining oneself as one works to determine a …

On The Boundedness Character Of Third-Order Rational Difference Equations, Eugene P. Quinn Jan 2006

On The Boundedness Character Of Third-Order Rational Difference Equations, Eugene P. Quinn

Open Access Dissertations

We investigate the global behavior of the solutions of rational difference equations. In particular, we study the global stability, the periodic nature, and especially the boundedness character of their solutions. In the first manuscript we study the equation[special characters omitted]and establish that every solution of this equation converges to a (not necessarily prime) period-two solution when γ = β + δ + A and β + A is positive, and that unbounded solutions of this equation exist whenever γ > β + δ + A. In this case, we establish a very large set of initial conditions that produce unbounded solutions. …

Cupolets: Chaotic Unstable Periodic Orbits Theory And Applications, Kourosh Zarringhalam Jan 2006

Cupolets: Chaotic Unstable Periodic Orbits Theory And Applications, Kourosh Zarringhalam

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent theoretical work suggests that periodic orbits of chaotic systems are a rich source of qualitative information about the dynamical system. The presence of unstable periodic orbits located densely on the attractor is a typical characteristic of chaotic systems. This abundance of unstable periodic orbits can be utilized in a wide variety of theoretical and practical applications [19]. In particular, chaotic communication techniques and methods of controlling chaos depend on this property of chaotic attractors [12, 13].

In the first part of this thesis, a control scheme for stabilizing the unstable periodic orbits of chaotic systems is presented and the …

Surface Wind Response To Oceanic Fronts, Qingtao Song Jan 2006

Surface Wind Response To Oceanic Fronts, Qingtao Song

Open Access Dissertations

The surface wind response in mesoscale to oceanic front was analyzed by using a combination of scatterometer (NSCAT and QuikSCAT) wind data and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) sea surface temperature (SST) data in conjunction with numerical simulations made with Pennsylvania State University (PSU)-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5). MM5 simulations of the response of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) to a sharp SST front are compared with observations made during the Frontal Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (FASINEX) in the North Atlantic. The fully three-dimensional (3D) MM5 with the Medium-Range Forecast (MRF) boundary-layer model captures the …

The Postcolonial Body In Queer Space And Time, Rebecca Fine Romanow Jan 2006

The Postcolonial Body In Queer Space And Time, Rebecca Fine Romanow

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines the ways in which the notion of the postcolonial correlates to Judith Halberstam's idea of queer space and time where, in "[detaching] queerness from sexuality" (1), chronologies represent a "diminishing future [which] creates a new emphasis on the here, the present, the now" (Halberstam2). Emphasizing authors from Africa, the Levant, and Southeast Asia in the diaspora in London from the mid-1960s through 1990, the reading of both postcolonial lands and subjects as "queer counterproductive" space reveals a depiction of bodies in these texts as located in and performing "queer space and time." I argue that the first …
