In the post-Enron period the term of 'earnings quality' has been widely discussed in the context of white-collar crime, frauds committed upon producing financial reports, financial result manipulations, the scope of disclosed information (public and private), and the general credibility of the data provided for in a financial report. An element of analyzing the financial standing of an economic entity becomes essential, since it determines the extent to which the generated profit is usable in making economic decisions. As we know, the classical diffusion can not be able to respond the experimental results of the diffusion in the fully ionized and isothermal plasma. In this article, we purpose to extract the empirical coefficients of the Bohm diffusion and its confinement time, theoretically, in the fully ionized plasma, using the single fluid MHD equations.

The Incorporation Of Atmospheric Variability Into Dirsig, Brian Dobbs

Theses

The goal of this research can be divided into two main areas. The first is to improve the existing manner in which DIRSIG samples and references the atmosphere. The second is to give DIRSIG the ability to incorporate atmospheric inhomogeneities, as well as the ability to accurately model them. DIRSIG has limitations in how it currently samples the atmosphere. From a geometric standpoint, it does not fully sample the energy which is scattered by the atmosphere towards the sensor (upwelled radiance). There are also other geometric issues which lead to inaccurate modeling results. One significant inaccuracy is the fact that …

Volatility Spillovers Between Stock Prices And Exchange Rates: Empiral Evidence From Six Apec Economies, Lucia Morales, Mary O'Donnell

This paper set out to examine the volatility linkages between stock returns and exchange rates in a number of East Asian markets. Overall, our main results indicate that since the Asian financial crises, there exists significant scope for investors and portfolio managers to diversify their assets between stocks and currencies in these markets. In particular, the lack of volatility spillovers between stock markets and exchange rates, and between exchange rates and stock markets in all countries, except Taiwan in the post crises period indicates that there is scope for investors to diversify their investments and to benefit from potential gains …

Caenorhabditis briggsae is being developed in parallel to C. elegans as a model system, primarily for the study of evolution. Like C. elegans, C. briggsae is a protandrous hermaphrodite and like C. elegans, its genome has been sequenced. From this point, these two model systems diverge. The development, behavior, and physiology of C. elegans have been characterized through tens of thousands of genetic and molecular studies. Genetic and molecular characterizations of C. briggsae are relatively few. Experimental resources in C. elegans include a high density recombination map that is well integrated with the genome sequence. The C. briggsae …

Performance Comparison Of Hyperspectral Target Detection Algorithms, Adam Cisz

Theses

This thesis performs a performance comparison on existing hyperspectral target detection algorithms. The algorithms chosen for this analysis include multiple adaptive matched filters and the physics based modeling invariant technique. The adaptive matched filter algorithms can be divided into either structured (geometrical) or unstructured (statistical) algorithms. The difference between these two categories is in the manner in which the background is characterized. The target detection procedure includes multiple pre-processing steps that are examined here as well. The effects of atmospheric compensation, dimensionality reduction, background characterization, and target subspace creation are all analyzed in terms of target detection performance. At each …

Mammalian antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effectors of the innate immune response. A multitude of signals coming from pathways of mammalian pathogen/pattern recognition receptors and other proteins affect the expression of AMP-coding genes (AMPcgs). For many AMPcgs the promoter elements and transcription factors that control their tissue cell-specific expression have yet to be fully identified and characterized. Results- Based upon the RIKEN full-length cDNA and public sequence data derived from human, mouse and rat, we identified 178 candidate AMP transcripts derived from 61 genes belonging to 29 AMP families. Re-Examining The Politics Of U.S. Intervention In Early 20th Century Nicaragua: José Madriz And The Conservative Restoration, Yann Kerevel

Research Papers

This research re-examines the U.S. intervention in Nicaragua in 1909-10. Most literature of this period argues that the United States forced the dictator Zelaya out of office in 1909; however, I contend that the argument that U.S. intervention caused the fall of Zelaya does not clearly match up to the historical record. Instead, I argue it is much more compelling to examine U.S. policy toward José Madriz to understand the impact of the intervention. It is clear that U.S. policy was the decisive factor in the fall of Madriz, while it is less convincing in the case of Zelaya.
