Evidence For Two Kinematically Distinct Broad Emission Line Producing Regions In Active Galactic Nuclei, Stephanie A. Snedden, C. Martin Gaskell
C. Martin Gaskell Publications
We present the results of an analysis of line profiles of high- and low-ionization broad emission lines in 8 AGNs observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. We derive the physical conditions in the gas as a function of velocity. We find no evidence for a separate intermediate line region. For the broad line region as a whole we find a major contradiction between the velocity dependencies of conditions deduced from the major high-ionization lines and those deduced from the hydrogen lines alone if they are assumed to come from the same gas clouds. The hydrogen lines imply that the density …

What Type Of Leadership Does Africa Need To Join The First World?, Aida Ayalew
What Type Of Leadership Does Africa Need To Join The First World?, Aida Ayalew
Theses and Graduate Projects
Internal conflict and lack of leadership are becoming major prohibiting agents that are hindering African countries from economic growth and prosperity. Many countries in Africa have ethnic, racial or political conflicts that are progressing and most of these conflicts are the result of negative leadership.
Resolving internal conflict in Africa requires taking responsibility for the people and for the country. Taking responsibility requires a hard study of the effects of internal conflict, the effects of war, and other contributing factors that hinder Africa from economic growth. The only way that African countries can take charge in solving the problems of …

Effects Of Bias Stress On Zno Nanowire Field-Effect Transistors Fabricated With Organic Gate Nanodielectrics, Sanghyun Ju, David B. Janes, Gang Lu, Antonio Facchetti, Tobin J. Marks
Birck and NCN Publications
The effects of bias stress gate stress or drain stress on nanowire field-effect transistor NW-FET stability were investigated as a function of stress bias and stress time. The n-channel NW-FETs used a nanoscopic self-assembled organic gate insulator, and each device contained a single ZnO nanowire. Before stress, the off current is limited by a leakage current in the 1 nA range, which increases as the gate to source bias becomes increasingly negative. The devices also exhibited significant changes in threshold voltage Vth and off current over 500 repeated measurement sweeps. The leakage current was significantly reduced after gate stress, but …

Circuit Court Opinions
These appeals challenge the District Court's approval of an amended settlement agreement (the "Settlement Agreement") reached in a class action lawsuit brought against defendant-counter-claimant-appellee Merck-Medco Managed Care, L.L.C., a/k/a Medco Health Solutions, Inc., and its former parent company, Merck & Co., Inc. (collectively, "Medco"), by a plaintiff class of employee welfare benefit plans (the "Plaintiffs"). Plaintiffs, the trustees and beneficiaries of various employee welfare benefit plans, brought this action alleging that Medco breached its fiduciary duty under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA") by failing to act in their best interest in its capacity as a pharmaceutical …

Electrophile-Induced Ether Transfer: A New Approach To Polyketide Structural Units, Kai Liu, Richard E. Taylor, Rendy Kartika
Electrophile-Induced Ether Transfer: A New Approach To Polyketide Structural Units, Kai Liu, Richard E. Taylor, Rendy Kartika
Faculty Publications
A strategically novel approach to the formation of syn-1,3-diol mono- and diethers through electrophilic activation of homoallylic alkoxymethyl ethers has been developed. The resulting polyketide-like synthetic fragments are generated in good yield and with excellent stereocontrol. A chairlike transition state is proposed to account for the high stereoselectivity. Varying the conditions of the reaction workup results in the efficient generation of mono- and diether containing structural units common to polyketide natural products. © 2006 American Chemical Society.

The Ventilatory Response To Normoxic Hypercapnia In Male Pet-1 Knockout Mice And The Influence Of Female Sex Hormones, Simon Roderick Alfred Best
The Ventilatory Response To Normoxic Hypercapnia In Male Pet-1 Knockout Mice And The Influence Of Female Sex Hormones, Simon Roderick Alfred Best
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Purpose: To determine if the deficiency in the hypercapnic ventilatory response as a result of 70% loss of serotonergic neurons in male Pet-1 knockout mice and the sparing of the female Pet-1 knockout mice can been accounted for and corrected by supplementation with estrogen and progesterone. Methods: Using whole-body flow-through plethysmography, 5 male Pet-1 -/- mice and 5 wild type mice were exposed to room air, 3%, 5%, 7%, and 10% CO2 and VE measured. All mice were then treated with oral 17β-estradiol (2500 nM) for 48 hours followed by a SC injection of progesterone (2 mg/kg). One hour after …
Uncovering The Role Of Stress In Craniosynosostosis, Justin Heller
Uncovering The Role Of Stress In Craniosynosostosis, Justin Heller
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of one or more of the cranial sutures resulting in skull deformity and possible brain dysfunction. It occurs in roughly 1 in 2,000 live births.1 It may be associated with syndromes or occur sporadically. Any cranial suture may be involved. The descriptions of the skull dysmorphologies have led to numerous hypotheses regarding the developmental trajectory of the synostosed skull, including the role of the cranial vault and cranial base. As proposed originally by Virchow (1851),2 the shape of the skull in craniosynostosis is usually attributed to a lack of local growth perpendicular to the fused …
Spatial Separation Of Large Dynamical Blueshift And Harmonic Generation, Mette B. Gaarde, Mitsuko Murakami, Reinhard Kienberger
Spatial Separation Of Large Dynamical Blueshift And Harmonic Generation, Mette B. Gaarde, Mitsuko Murakami, Reinhard Kienberger
Faculty Publications
We study the temporal and spatial dynamics of the large amplitude and frequency modulation that can be induced in an intense, few cycle laser pulse as it propagates through a rapidly ionizing gas. Our calculations include both single atom and macroscopic interactions between the nonlinear medium and the laser field. We analyze the harmonic generation by such pulses and show that it is spatially separated from the ionization dynamics which produce a large dynamical blueshift of the laser pulse. This means that small changes in the initial laser focusing conditions can lead to large differences in the laser frequency modulation, …

Digital Radio Cultures In Europe: Progress To Date And Prospects For The Future:A Review Of Research Produced By Drace, Brian O'Neill, Stephen Lax
Conference Papers
Digital Radio Cultures in Europe (DRACE), was established in 2004 under the COST Action A20 “The Impact of the Internet on Mass Media in Europe”. The original configuration of the COST A20 group included provision for an internet and music research group but this was re-focussed following a re-organisation in which DRACE was more formally incorporated. The group comprises 14 researchers with specific interests in radio from Norway, Finland, Denmark, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Croatia, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The objective of the research group is to be at the forefront of empirical research on changes in radio cultures …

The ‘Meat-Ax’ On The Desktop: A Digital Edition Of Cather's Early Journalism, Andrew Jewell
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
Willa Cather's work as a journalist, writing for mostly Lincoln and Pittsburgh newspapers when she was in her twenties, is a remarkable and wide-ranging body of work that offers significant insights into major critical questions about Cather and American literary and cultural history. Since her writings were largely critical responses to theatrical productions, books, and music, the articles provide a detailed and rich record of her emerging aesthetic sensibilities during this crucial period of development. Additionally, since she covered such a wide variety of performances, companies, and works, her journalism offers a detailed view of the culture of the 1890s …

Subtidal Inner Shelf Currents Off Cartagena De Indias, Caribbean Coast Of Colombia, Mauro Maza, George Voulgaris, Bulusu Subrahmanyam
Faculty Publications
Seasonal trends in inner shelf subtidal circulation off the coast of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, are examined through the analysis of current profiles, hydrographic, meteorological and satellite data collected from 1999 to 2002. During the dry season (December–April) the water column is well-mixed and along-shelf currents flow southwestward following the steady trade winds. In the rainy season (May –November) the water column experiences continuous events of stratification and the along-shelf currents flow northeastward, opposing the weak southwestward winds. In the dry season the along shelfcirculation is mostly driven by wind forcing, while in the rainy season, the circulation is set …
