A New Integrable Equation With Cuspons And W/M-Shape-Peaks Solitons, Zhijun Qiao Nov 2006

A New Integrable Equation With Cuspons And W/M-Shape-Peaks Solitons, Zhijun Qiao

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new completely integrable wave equation: mt+mx u2 −ux 2 +2m2ux=0, m=u−uxx. The equation is derived from the two dimensional Euler equation and is proven to have Lax pair and bi-Hamiltonian structures. This equation possesses new cusp solitons—cuspons, instead of regular peakons ce− −ct with speed c. Through investigating the equation, we develop a new kind of soliton solutions—“W/M”-shape-peaks solitons. There exist no smooth solitons for this integrable water wave equation.

Economic Aspects Of The Right To A Compulsory Portion In The (French And German) Law Of Succession, Martin Schöpflin Nov 2006

Economic Aspects Of The Right To A Compulsory Portion In The (French And German) Law Of Succession, Martin Schöpflin

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

This paper shows that the German legislator thought of the economic effects of sussession law in the year 1879. Equally, the French legislator and the French discussion considered some aspects that are econmomically relevant. The economic considerations concerned the right to a compulsory portion (German: Pflichtteilsrecht; French: la réserve). The legislator’s objective was to distribute wealth. The current criticism of this objective in Germany is not justified. The right to a compulsory portion implies several further economic aspects. It generates incentives for economic cooperation between family members and prevents them from externalizing costs (onto the social system). It reduces transaction …

Are Domain Walls In Spin Glasses Described By Stochastic Loewner Evolutions?, Alan Middleton, Denis Bernard, Pierre Le Doussal Nov 2006

Are Domain Walls In Spin Glasses Described By Stochastic Loewner Evolutions?, Alan Middleton, Denis Bernard, Pierre Le Doussal

Physics - All Scholarship

Domain walls for spin glasses are believed to be scale invariant invariant; a stronger symmetry, conformal invariance, has the potential to hold. The statistics of zero-temperature Ising spin glass domain walls in two dimensions are used to test the hypothesis that these domain walls are described by a Schramm-Loewner evolution SLE$_\kappa$. Multiple tests are consistent with SLE$_\kappa$, where $\kappa=2.30(5)$. Both conformal invariance and the domain Markov property are tested. The latter does not hold in small systems, but detailed numerical evidence suggests that it holds in the continuum limit.

Economic Emergency And The Rule Of Law, Bernadette A. Meyler Nov 2006

Economic Emergency And The Rule Of Law, Bernadette A. Meyler

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Academic work extolling the merits of the "rule of law" both domestically and internationally abounds today, yet the meanings of the phrase itself seem to proliferate. Two of the most prominent contexts in which rule of law rhetoric appears are those of economic development and states of emergency. In the area of private law, dissemination of the rule of law across the globe and, in particular, among emerging market countries is often deemed a prerequisite for enhancing economic development, partly because it ensures that foreign investments will not be summarily expropriated and that contractual rights will not be frustrated by …
