How Long Does It Take A Peanut To Burn?, University Relations

Campus News Archive

How long does it take a peanut to burn? If you had 40 pieces of candy to divide among 40 people, would you keep all of it or would you share it equally with the entire group? These are among the renewable energy questions that junior high students from Buffalo found answers to when they visited UMM.

Mechanisms Of Larval Transport: Vertical Distribution Of Bivalve Larvae Varies With Tidal Conditions, Am Knights, Tp Crowe, G Burnell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Larval transport is a key process in the life-history and population dynamics of many marine species. It is strongly influenced by ocean currents, but the influence of behavioural traits of larvae (e.g. vertical migration) on their advective dispersal is poorly understood. In the absence of field data, predictions of population connectivity are often based on hydrodynamic models and assume that larvae behave as passive particles. Variations in the vertical distribution of early and late stage larvae of Mytilus spp. were investigated in a field study in the Irish Sea, collecting discrete water samples by Niskin sampler at a range of …

A Performance Evaluation Of Dynamic Transport Switching For Multi-Transport Devices, Lei Wang Nov 2006

A Performance Evaluation Of Dynamic Transport Switching For Multi-Transport Devices, Lei Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Multi-transport devices are becoming more common, but sophisticated software is needed to fully realize the advantages of these devices. In this paper, we examine the performance of dynamic transport switching, which selects the best available transport for communication between two devices. We simulate transport switching within the Quality of Transport (QoT) architecture and show that it can effectively mitigate the effects of congestion and interference for connections between two multi-transport devices. We then evaluate dynamic transport switching overhead to characterize its effect on application throughput. Based on these insights, we identify several limitations of the QoT architecture and present solutions …

Garnetites Of The Cardigan Pluton - Evidence For Restite And Implications For Source Rock Compositions., Teresa K. Pett

Theses and Dissertations

The Cardigan pluton, located in the southern half of New Hampshire, is a strongly peraluminous, S-type granite which is granodioritic in composition. It is inferred to have been emplaced rapidly, thrust up along west-verging nappes during the Acadian orogeny. Distinctive pods, consisting of 50 to 70 percent modal garnet, are found throughout the pluton in assemblages of garnet + sillimanite + biotite + plagioclase + quartz. These garnetite rocks present an intriguing case for restite. Textural features of the garnetite rocks, such as fibrolitic sillimanite mats and flat, unzoned major and trace-element garnet grain profiles, provide evidence for biotite dehydration …

Mimo Communication Capacity: Antenna Coupling And Precoding For Incoherent Detection, Nicolas W. Bikhazi Nov 2006

Mimo Communication Capacity: Antenna Coupling And Precoding For Incoherent Detection, Nicolas W. Bikhazi

Theses and Dissertations

While the capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has been explored in considerable detail, virtually all literature on this topic ignores electromagnetic considerations. This dissertation explores electromagnetic effects on the capacity performance of these multi-antenna architectures. Specifically, it examines the impact of superdirectivity for compact antenna arrays, the effect of antenna mutual coupling, and MIMO performance of multi-mode optical fiber with non-linear detection. Superdirectivity can lead to abnormally large capacity bounds in a MIMO communication system, especially when the antennas are placed close together. Because superdirective behavior is difficult to achieve in practice, this work formulates an approach for limiting …

Predicting On-Orbit Static Single Event Upset Rates In Xilinx Virtex Fpgas, Joshua Engel, Keith S. Morgan, Michael J. Wirthlin, Paul S. Graham Nov 2006

Predicting On-Orbit Static Single Event Upset Rates In Xilinx Virtex Fpgas, Joshua Engel, Keith S. Morgan, Michael J. Wirthlin, Paul S. Graham

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: Department of Energy, Los Alamos National Laboratory. This document describes the methodology used to predict single-event upset rates for Xilinx Virtex FPGAs based on the CREME96 orbit modeling tool. Using this methodology, SEU upset rates are obtained for several Xilinx Virtex FPGAs including Virtex, Virtex-II, and Virtex-4. Further, SEU upset rates are obtained for a variety of orbits for each of these FPGAs.
