A Long-Term Perspective On Drought In The Great Plains And West, Sherilyn C. Fritz Nov 2006

A Long-Term Perspective On Drought In The Great Plains And West, Sherilyn C. Fritz

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Management of water resources requires an understanding of the full range of natural variability and its consequences. The weather record, which spans the last 100 years or so, provides a snapshot of the contemporary history of drought and its impacts, but this record is relatively short and is inadequate for understanding long-term trends or for evaluating the magnitude of human impacts. A variety of so-called paleoclimatic records - such as tree rings, lake sediments, and sand dunes - record the history of the environment and can be used to extend the record of climatic variation to older intervals of time. …

The project implemented ASHRAE 90.1 2004 into Florida's compliance tool, EnergyGauge, to allow inclusion of the methodologies and rule sets of ASHRAE 90.1-2004. The project also implemented IECC 2003 into Florida's compliance tool to allow inclusion of the methodologies of Chapters 4, 5, and 6 of the International Energy Conservation Code 2003 (IECC 2003). Field testing was completed in 40 central Florida homes (built after March 1, 2002) to examine compliance with the balanced return air, duct leakage, and combustion/dilution air requirements of the Florida Mechanical Code. A course titled Complying with Duct System Requirements of the Florida Energy Code …

Semiparametric Regression Of Multi-Dimensional Genetic Pathway Data: Least Squares Kernel Machines And Linear Mixed Models, Dawei Liu, Xihong Lin, Debashis Ghosh Nov 2006

Semiparametric Regression Of Multi-Dimensional Genetic Pathway Data: Least Squares Kernel Machines And Linear Mixed Models, Dawei Liu, Xihong Lin, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

SUMMARY. We consider a semiparametric regression model that relates a normal outcome to covariates and a genetic pathway, where the covariate effects are modeled parametrically and the pathway effect of multiple gene expressions is modeled parametrically or nonparametrically using least squares kernel machines (LSKMs). This unified framework allows a flexible function for the joint effect of multiple genes within a pathway by specifying a kernel function and allows for the possibility that each gene expression effect might be nonlinear and the genes within the same pathway are likely to interact with each other in a complicated way. This semiparametric model …

The Anchor, Volume 120.10: November 29, 2006, Hope College

The Anchor: 2006

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Overinterpolation, Dan Coman, Evgeny A. Poletsky

Mathematics - All Scholarship

In this paper we study the consequences of overinterpolation, i.e., the situation when a function can be interpolated by polynomial, or rational, or algebraic functions in more points that normally expected. We show that in many cases such a function has specific forms.

Théodore Nisard’S Accompagnement Du Plain-Chant From Dictionnaire Liturgique, Historique Et Théorique De Plain-Chant Et De Musique D’Église Au Moyen Age Dans Les Temps Modernes (1854): An English Translation, Gerald W. Holbrook

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Joseph Louis d’Ortigue (1802-1866), a music critic in Paris beginning in 1829, succeeded Hector Berlioz as a writer for the Journal des dèbats. He first published writings on opera, but after 1840 because of a fascination with religious music, especially chant, he devoted himself to the study of this genre, eventually undertaking his Dictionnaire Liturgique, Historique et Théorique de Plain-Chant et de Musique d’église au moyen age et dans les temps modernes (1854). For this work he commissioned Théodore Nisard, also known as Abbé Théodule Elzéar Xavier Normand, a Belgian organist and editor, to write a treatise on organ accompaniment …

Economics Of Management Options For Lake Mcconaughy, Ray Supalla, Thomas V. Buell Nov 2006

Economics Of Management Options For Lake Mcconaughy, Ray Supalla, Thomas V. Buell

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

The amount of water stored in Lake McConaughy reached a historical low in the Fall of 2004 and again in 2006. In 2005 and 2006 CNPPID irrigators received less than a full supply of Lake McConaughy water for the first time since the system came on line over 60 years ago. Electric power interests, recreation interests and the regional economy have also been adversely affected by low water levels. What, if anything should the State of Nebraska do to minimize the adverse impacts from this situation and/or prevent it from developing again in the future?

The most critical policy issue …

The Cost Of Reducing Irrigation, Ray Supalla Nov 2006

The Cost Of Reducing Irrigation, Ray Supalla

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

For several decades Nebraska has proudly and appropriately regarded irrigation development as an important source of economic growth. However, in some parts of the state we now have too much of a good thing! To meet our Compact obligations to Kansas and Colorado in the Republican Basin and to comply with the proposed Cooperative Agreement for the Platte Basin we must find a way to consume less irrigation water. The cost of reducing irrigation and the equity implications will depend on what methods the state uses to achieve this objective.

We recently estimated the costs to irrigators and to the …
