Solving A Class Of System Of Volterra Integro-Differential Equations Using B-Spline Functions, Omar M. Al-Faour Dec 2006

Solving A Class Of System Of Volterra Integro-Differential Equations Using B-Spline Functions, Omar M. Al-Faour

Baghdad Science Journal

In this paper we propose an approach to the approximation for a system of first order linear Volterra integro-ordinary differential equations LVIODES. In this approach, B-spline basis functions which is dependent on control parameters is first formulated using matrix equations. We then focus on the two features of the B-spline functions, convergence and stability. Numerical results, including the solution of LVIODEs show the effectiveness that can be achieved using the proposed formula of the B-spline functions.

Funny Ha-Ha Or Funny Strange: The Structure And Meaning Of Laughter In Conversation, Linda Houts-Smith Dec 2006

Funny Ha-Ha Or Funny Strange: The Structure And Meaning Of Laughter In Conversation, Linda Houts-Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Although laughter has been studied for centuries, the work has occurred in several different fields, and the lack of an interdisciplinary approach has hindered the integration of results. Work in philosophy has focused on why we laugh but has lacked a basis in empirical data, resulting in ungrounded theories. Studies in neuroscience and linguistics rest on empirical data, but stop short of a full description of the phenomenon of laughter, focusing on when and how we laugh, but not why. This study seeks to describe the phenomenon of laughter more fully, to describe both the nature of the laughable and …

The Lived Experiences Of Three Student Teachers In A Birth-Third Grade Teacher Licensure Program, Kathleen A. Sonsteng Dec 2006

The Lived Experiences Of Three Student Teachers In A Birth-Third Grade Teacher Licensure Program, Kathleen A. Sonsteng

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to discover themes in the experience, behavior, and attitude of three students in a Birth-Third Grade Teacher Licensure Program, at a specific midwestern university, as the students were involved in their primary-level student teaching experience. In looking at the lived experiences of these three student teachers, the focus was on their level of confidence and preparedness before, during, and after student teaching.

This qualitative study used a phenomenological research approach. The phenomenon in this particular study is the primary-level student teaching experience. This study sought understanding of what this student teaching experience was for …

Large -Eddy Simulation Of The Effects Of Debris On Tornado Dynamics, Baiyun Gong Dec 2006

Large -Eddy Simulation Of The Effects Of Debris On Tornado Dynamics, Baiyun Gong

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tornadoes are one of the most intensely violent natural phenomena, which often bring considerable damage. Debris clouds are commonly observed along the tornado path. Studying tornadoes with debris is potentially important for several reasons: particle suspension may dramatically change the structure of the carrier flow; debris clouds represent one of the primary visual signatures of a tornado; large debris loadings can significantly enhance damage potential; differences between air and debris flow can complicate interpretation of Doppler radar measurements of velocity fields.;In earlier work, debris was added to an existing high-resolution LES model using a two-fluid Eulerian-Eulerian approach. The debris cloud …

Inventory Models For Production Systems With Constant/Linear Demand, Time Value Of Money, And Perishable/Non-Perishable Items, Karen N. Oganezov Dec 2006

Inventory Models For Production Systems With Constant/Linear Demand, Time Value Of Money, And Perishable/Non-Perishable Items, Karen N. Oganezov

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research considers inventory systems for economic production models where the objective is to find the optimal cycle time, which minimizes the total cost, and optimal amount of shortage if it is allowed. Several aspects such as time value of money, inflation, constant and linear demand rates, shortages, and deterioration are considered in developing different models. Closed formulas are obtained for the optimal policy in one model. For others, more complex models where closed formulas cannot be obtained, search techniques are used to find the optimal solution.;First, a deterministic inventory control problem is considered for determination of optimal production quantities …

Dynamic Model Of Circulating Fluidized Bed, Yue Huang Dec 2006

Dynamic Model Of Circulating Fluidized Bed, Yue Huang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) are used in many processes in the chemical industry to reduce pollution and increase efficiency. Optimization and control of CFBs are very important and require an accurate, real time, dynamic model to describe and quantify the process.;The present work focuses on modeling the transient behavior of large CFB units, whose flow characteristics were shown to yield C-shaped voidage profiles using cork as the fluidized material and air at ambient conditions.;The riser is modeled in two ways: (1) as a set of well-mixed tanks connected in series; (2) as a 1-D axisymetric cluster flow. The tanks-in-series model …

Effectiveness Of Aquatic Phytoremediation Of Nutrients Via Watercress (Nasturtium Officinale), Basil (Ocimum Basilicum), Dill (Anethum Graveolens) And Lettuce (Lactuca Sativa) From Effluent Of A Flow-Through Aquaculture Operation, Derek J. Dyer Dec 2006

Dyer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Effluent from the aquaculture industry is a source of nutrient loading upon water bodies nationwide. Aquaponics, the simultaneous cultivation of fish and plants, has the potential to effectively reduce nutrient concentrations through phytoremediation, with the added benefit of producing a valuable crop. The purpose of this preliminary research was to determine if watercress ( Nasturtium officinale) could be used to reduce nutrients from aquaculture effluent in sufficient concentrations to be functional as a remediation technique. Additionally, basil (Ocimum basilicum), dill (Anethum graveolens) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were correspondingly examined. Conditions which affected plant growth versus nutrient remediation were also to …

American Standard, John A. Pascarella Dec 2006

American Standard, John A. Pascarella

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The work included in my MFA thesis exhibition entitled " American Standard" examines our role as narrative-based individuals within the American culture. In this current body of work I use the photographic image as a director uses the medium of film (moving image). Location scouting, casting, lighting, directing, editing, and processing all become intricate parts of the work, all to lead to a single solitary frozen moment in time that I believe creates a story. Story as created not in a fictional sense, but more in the vein of creative non-fiction, as the stories I tell come from a personal …

Health -Related Quality Of Life In Multiple Sclerosis: Measurement, Predictors And Utilization In Routine Clinical Practice, Vivek S. Pawar Dec 2006

Health -Related Quality Of Life In Multiple Sclerosis: Measurement, Predictors And Utilization In Routine Clinical Practice, Vivek S. Pawar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are a large number of patient-reported questionnaires to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). In order to make a recommendation for use in clinical practice, a comparison of their psychometric properties is necessary. In addition to accurate assessment, it is also necessary to identify factors that have a significant impact on HRQoL. Further, lack of use of HRQoL information in clinical practice warrants examination of attitudes and behavior of neurologists about HRQoL assessment and their intention to consider incorporating HRQoL information in their decision making. This study collected data from patients with MS …

[1] Carbon flux models based on light use efficiency (LUE), such as the MOD17 algorithm, have proved difficult to parameterize because of uncertainties in the LUE term, which is usually estimated from meteorological variables available only at large spatial scales. In search of simpler models based entirely on remote‐sensing data, we examined direct relationships between the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and gross primary productivity (GPP) measured at nine eddy covariance flux tower sites across North America. When data from the winter period of inactive photosynthesis were excluded, the overall relationship between EVI and tower GPP was better than that between …

Second-Order Perfectionism, Cass R. Sunstein Dec 2006

Second-Order Perfectionism, Cass R. Sunstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In constitutional law, first-order perfectionism represents an effort to cast the Constitution’s ideals in the best constructive light. Ronald Dworkin's conception of law as "integrity" can be seen as a form of first-order perfectionism. By contrast, second-order perfectionism attempts to set out an account of constitutional adjudication that is sensitive to the fallibility of federal judges. Originalism is best defended as a form of second-order perfectionism; the same can be said of Thayerism, captured in the view that judges should uphold statutes unless they are unquestionably violative of the Constitution. Minimalism, which calls for narrow, incompletely theorized judgments, is another …

Imagine you are 17 years old and locked up, again. You aren’t a murderer or rapist, you are an addict, and it’s all you have ever known. You are shaking uncontrollably, sweating profusely, seeing and hearing things that aren’t really there, vomiting, and screaming in agony. You are coming down off of one of the most addictive and destructive drugs in the world today, Meth. On the street it’s called ice, glass, crank, chalk, or crystal, to you it’s the substance that has destroyed every relationship you’ve ever had, its destroyed your family, kept you from getting your high school …

Surface Topography Contribution To Rfid’S Tags Efficiency Related To Resistivity, Mario A. Cruz Dec 2006

Surface Topography Contribution To Rfid’S Tags Efficiency Related To Resistivity, Mario A. Cruz

Masters Theses

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the new technologies with more vision and acceptance oriented to the distribution and storage industries. The RFID is a technology that can be used to identify, track and store information about groups of products, individual items, or product components, using radio waves. The RFID device needs an antenna in order to receive a signal and transmit information. The stamping process applied today to produce the RFID antenna works with foil or copper. These etched metal RFID tags offer good benefits, but the production cost is too high to achieve a widespread implementation. …
